Luca Guadgnino‘s new film, “Suspiria,” is certainly a singular, unique directorial vision. This retelling of Dario Argento‘s 1977 horror classic tells the story of Susie Bannion (Dakota Johnson), an American dancer accepted into an elite German dance company. Turns out the artistic director Madame Blanc (Tilda Swinton) is not who she seems.
This dance company is, essentially, a front for a coven of witches. Basically, this is what “American Horror Story: Coven” would have been like if it had been less “Mean Girls” and more “Blair Witch Project.” This isn’t a straight-up horror, however. It’s more a of a psychological drama – one that slowly cranks up the tension through suspenseful dance set piece, weird, erratic imagery, and a terrific performance by the inimitable Swinton.
She takes on three roles: Helena Markos, the ‘mother’ of the coven; Madame Blanc, the artistic director of the dance academy; and the therapist Dr Josef Klemperer.

There’s nothing Tilda Swinton can’t do. The 56-year-old actress is currently starring in Bong Joon Ho’s “Okja,” now available to stream on Netflix, which is the latest in a long history of roles that have completely transformed the way we see Swinton on the big screen. The actress shifts her looks and mannerisms from role to role, refusing to give audiences the same performance twice and constantly redefining the limits of her talent. She’s the closest thing we have to a cinematic chameleon.

“Okja” is the second Bong movie to completely transform Swinton, following her eye-popping presence as the villain in “Snowpiercer.” The word “unrecognizable” is thrown around a lot when talking about Swinton’s recent work, and for good reason. But what unites her many different performances is an unwavering commitment to her characters,...

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

By Michael Russnow The Academy Awards for me was a surprise, notably in that I mostly enjoyed Neil Patrick Harris’ performance. In the past, when he’s hosted the Tonys and Emmys I’ve not always been impressed, perhaps because he tried too hard to show off skills that were adequate but not thrilling. At the outset, I thought here we go again, bland, so-so singing with not so catchy lyrics, though against a clever background of cinematic screen moments into which Harris injected himself. And when Anna Kendrick joined him in song, the disparity in vocal ability was apparent, not to mention the charisma factor, which was eclipsed when Jack Black bounded onto the stage in a funny moment. As the opening wound down, Harris was in much finer voice and his patter was often clever, in particular his bit about predictions in a locked box to be overseen by Octavia Spencer.

Well, we're done. Another Oscar ceremony ends, and with it, another awards season and another year of Tech Support here at In Contention. On the whole, "The Grand Budapest Hotel" came out the big winner, taking four of the 10 crafts categories. "Whiplash" came up with two more while "Birdman," "Interstellar," "Selma" and "American Sniper" got in on the love-sharing with one apiece. Crafts category shut-outs for "Mr. Turner," "Unbroken" and "The Imitation Game," despite their impressive nomination counts, were unsurprising. It was also a year of repeat victors. Winners in Best Cinematography, Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Sound Editing and Visual Effects had all won previously. There was one big first-timer, though, in Alexandre Desplat – more on him in a moment. Others are still waiting for their first wins, alas. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, songwriter Diane Warren and sound mixer Frank Montaño immediately jump to mind. Emmanuel Lubezki's triumph in...

Welcome to the 87th Oscars. Host Neil Patrick Harris opened the show with a musical number featuring “moving pictures” inserting himself into scenes from classic films. Anna Kendrick joined him in the opening number as well as Jack Black before an audience of Hollywood’s A-listers at the Dolby Theatre.
The awards season, filled with ups and downs, came to a close on Oscar Sunday with Birdman winning four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director (Alejandro G. So then. We learned a few things about the Academy Awards this year. Firstly, we don't think we've ever got so many predictions wrong. Secondly, though, Hollywood sure loves films about the performing arts.

Show host Harris signs off with a chirpy, “Buenos noches!”
Sean Penn walks on. It’s time for the big one. Best film. Will it be Birdman or Boyhood? It’s Birdman! The movie ends the night tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel on four Oscars. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.
And now Matthew McConaughey saunters on stage to announce best actress. Julianne Moore, five times a nominee at the Oscars is the favourite. Will she get it this time for Still Alice? Yes she’s got...

When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.
The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.
Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.
Need some help in that office Oscar pool or at the party you’re throwing at home? Wamg is here to help.

They use to disqualify movies from this Oscar if they used too much computer enhancement (see The Hours) and always wanted their makeup effects practical (like American Werewolf in London). But nowadays computer enhancements seem to be a non-issue (see several recent winners and one of this year's nominees Guardians of the Galaxy). There are four indisputable truths about this relatively young category and this Oscar branch and they are like so:
• They love old age makeup
• They worship werewolves and love fantastically weird creatures, but hate zombies
• Hairstyling was recently added to the official category name but usually the wig heavy movies lose to films that are more prosthetically-focused
• There should be five nominees like every other category since literally every live-action film employs makeup and hair. Not every film requires visual effects or original songs or even original scores and those categories all have 5 nominees.

The smart money's on Tilda Swinton's 80-year-old Madame D. from "The Grand Budapest Hotel," but all three Oscar-nominated makeup/hairstyling teams are worthy contenders. It's about creative transformation in one form or another. 1. Frances Hannon ("The Grand Budapest Hotel"): "I did the research how Tilda should look, aging her teeth and eyes and the makeup and hair. Mark Coulier applied it for me and I made her up on top, using my mother as a bit of a reference point for the wonky lipstick and how a lady of her years makes herself up. The hair was perfect, a combination of the plumpness of Toulouse-Lautrec, the style of John Singer Sargent and the waves of Queen Mary. And the color came from a line where Gustave says he prefers blonds, so I used natural blond hair that had gone white with age. Some poor old lady had sold her hair,...

The 2015 Ee BAFTA Awards were handed out in London Sunday night and while the broadcast aired hours later in the United States, it didn't stop us from chronicling the twists and turns of a show often seen as a bellwether for the Academy Awards. It took home only three BAFTAs, but "Boyhood" was the biggest winner of the night as it won Best Film and Richard Linklater earned Director honors. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" took home five statues including Original Screenplay for Wes Anderson, Production Design, Costumes, Original Music and Make Up & Hair. This year's Oscar nominees for Best Makeup and Hairstyling — "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Guardians of the Galaxy" — are a typically varied assortment. This is a branch, after all, whose choices often reflect consideration of the work itself above Best Picture-contending frontrunners. Just last year we got nominations for films like "Bad Grandpa" and "The Lone Ranger." This time around, the cream of the crop just happened to come in critically acclaimed films. Beginning with "Foxcatcher," Bill Corso and his co-nominee, Dennis Liddiard, had a gargantuan task ahead of them: transforming well-known comedic actors Steve Carell and Channing Tatum, as well as Mark Ruffalo, into something approaching blue blood John du Pont, wrestling wunderkind Mark Schultz and his ill-fated brother Dave. They split duties, with Liddiard handling Tatum's transformation, Corso working on Carell and the two of them coming to Ruffalo when needed. Good Morning Oscar fans! Today is nomination day!
Wamg was in the thick of nomination morning fever at the home of the Oscars – the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences.
Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.
Let’s get right to the big shockers – No Lego Movie for Best Animated Feature or Life Itself in Best Documentary Feature.
Also missing among the presumed nominees were Ava DuVernay (Selma, directing), Clint Eastwood (American Sniper, directing), Jennifer Aniston (Cake, best actress), David Oyelowo (Selma, best actor), Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler, best actor), Ralph Fiennes (The Grand Budapest Hotel, best actor), Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl,...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:
Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.
