Following Raw and Titane, Julia Ducournau has set her third feature with Alpha. Though no plot details have been unveiled this far, Golshifteh Farahani and Tahar Rahim (A Prophet) will lead the film, Deadline reports. “Alpha is Julia’s most personal, profound work yet, and we are looking forward to a global audience discovering the story with as much excitement as we did,” said Filmnation and Charades, while the producers added, “Alpha is a new page in Julia Ducournau’s corpus that is both very consistent with the previous ones and entirely new in its tone.”

Is one renaissance man about to take on another? Apparently so, as IndieWire has confirmed that Andrew Haigh has been tapped to helm a highly anticipated adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s lauded 2017 biography of Leonardo Da Vinci. Paramount had initially won the film rights when the book was first released and even cast the world’s 2nd most famous Leonardo, Di Caprio, in the lead role. Unfortunately, its version eventually went into turnaround allowing Universal to swoop in (perhaps with the use of Da Vinci’s ornithopter) and create a fresh package with Haigh. Initially it was announced that Christopher Hampton would be scripting the piece, but with Haigh now onboard, Universal looks to be giving him full creative oversight, perhaps in an effort to summon the spirit of Da Vinci himself.

Universal Pictures has tapped renowned British filmmaker Andrew Haigh (All of Us Strangers) to write and direct a Leonardo da Vinci film based on Walter Isaacson’s bestselling 2017 biography of the artist, Deadline can confirm.
Based on thousands of pages from Da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, the biography looks to connect his art to his science, showing how Leonardo’s genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy.
An icon of the Italian Renaissance, Da Vinci was not only a prolific painter but also a polymath excelling in various fields including science, engineering, and anatomy. His masterpieces, the “Mona Lisa,” and “The Last Supper” are among the most recognizable and influential works of art in history.
Christopher Hampton wrote a previous draft of the Da Vinci script.

Universal Pictures has found its director for the high-priority Leonardo da Vinci film. “All of Us Strangers” helmer Andrew Haigh has signed on to direct and adapt Walter Isaacson’s acclaimed biography of the Renaissance man.
Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo da Vinci’s notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Isaacson’s book became one of the hottest literary properties when it hit the market in 2017. At the time, Universal was outbid by Paramount, which developed the project with Leonardo DiCaprio for years before putting it in turnaround. Universal quietly picked it up last year. The runaway bestseller connects da Vinci’s transcendent art, which includes the Mona Lisa painting hanging in the Louvre, to his trailblazing science — and shows how his genius was driven by an insatiable curiosity, careful observation and a whimsical imagination. Finally: All Of Us Strangers, starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal, is finally getting a UK physical media release.
Earlier this year, as Fox Searchlight’s Oscar-attracting films were slowly being confirmed for a physical media release, there was one notable exception. That’d be Andrew Haigh’s extraordinary movie All Of Us Strangers, a film that’d received huge – and richly deserved – acclaim on its release, but was entirely snubbed by the Oscars. It got some BAFTA recognition, but for this particular writer, the film’s the best of the last year or so. The Beekeeper included.
All Of Us Strangers has, following its theatrical release, ended up on the Disney+ streaming service. Yet the word was that there were no plans to put the movie out on DVD and Blu-ray too. That was the rumour anyway (although one or two industry insiders backed that up for us). Now though,...

Ania Trzebiatowska has compiled an eclectic selection of fiction and non-fiction titles for the third annual Sands International Film Festival, which kicked off Friday evening in St Andrews, Scotland.
Mounted across this weekend in the ancient university town, Trzebiatowska — also a full-time programmer at Sundance — runs the festival with an impressive gang of part-time student programmers from the University of St. Andrews, a partner on the festival alongside Joe and Anthony Russo’s Agbo. The Avengers: Endgame filmmakers are connected to the town through Joe’s eldest daughter, who studied at St Andrews. The two Russos were in the building this evening.

In “Back to Black,” Jack O’Connell’s Blake Fielder-Civil comes into the life of Amy Winehouse — played by an exceptional Marisa Abela — with seductive bravado, sweeping the singer off her feet on their first meeting in a London pub thanks to, among other things, a lip-synced rendition of the Shangri-La’s “Leader of the Pack”.
As the divisive biopic, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson and released in the U.K. by StudioCanal this Friday (and in the U.S. by Focus Features on May 17), agonizingly portrays, the smitten pair quickly descend into violent self-destruction — a “toxic co-dependency” as Fielder-Civil later describes it in the film — fueled by alcoholism and drug abuse.
Many may question the ethics of picking at a tragic story that was heavily chronicled and sensationalized by the media in real-time during Winehouse’s final years. But for anyone who’s been tracking O’Connell’s career, the opportunity to...

The Discarnates.Taichi Yamada’s novel Ijintachi to no natsu (1987)—the title literally translates as Summer of the Strange People; the book was published in English as Strangers—intertwines a tale of loving human connection with a dense meditation on navigating personal history. A screenwriter, Hideo Harada, feels stalled in his life after a divorce; he lives in a mostly uninhabited high-rise where he works in solitude on TV scripts. When visiting his old hometown, Asakusa, he meets a couple who bear a striking resemblance to his long-dead parents, and very soon he realizes these are their ghosts. While this surreal experience pulls him in one direction, his sole neighbor in the building, Kei, pulls him in another, as they begin a romantic relationship. His parents’ ghosts offer a chance to playact a childhood he never got to experience due to their untimely passing, but the present is where the...

Andrew Scott has been awarded Best Actor at the 33rd Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards. The win makes the Irish actor the first performer to be handed top honors from both of the UK’s national critics bodies.
Scott won the Theatre Awards award for his performance in Vanya, a one-man Chekov adaptation during which Scott plays eight different characters in conversation with each other. Scott landed the same award late last year from the Film Critics Circle, also under the UK Critics’ Circle umbrella for his performance in Andrew Haigh’s enigmatic feature All Of Us Strangers.
Sarah Hemming, the chief theater critic of the Financial Times, described Scott’s performance in Vanya as “tremendously moving, dialing up the empathy at the heart of that great, humane play and at the heart of live theatre” when she presented him with the award.

Andrew Haigh’s profoundly moving ghost story follows in a bittersweet line of dramas, from Only Yesterday to Aftersun, in which a character is transported back to their early years
I tend to be wary of movies talked up as tear-jerkers – going into any film with an expected or prescribed emotional reaction kind of sets the body up to resist. If you’ve heard anything about Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers, it’s probably something along those lines. “This film will destroy you,” a colleague told me before I saw it last summer. (Should we be enticed by such a promise?) But then it did: not aggressively or unpleasantly, but by slow degrees, continuing in the weeks and months after I saw it, the memory of it returning and lingering like a deep bruise when my father died last November.

Before praising the 2024 Oscars and their approach to sex, we need to acknowledge one truth. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences completely ignored one of the best movies of the year, and a movie that features one of the most frank and vulnerable sexual scenes committed to film. It, of course, involves a bathtub, where one man’s desire for another becomes clear in a way that not even he had heretofore acknowledged.
What? No, not Saltburn. I said a good movie, not a loud nothing that approaches sex like a 12-year-old who just learned a few rude words.
I’m referring to the beautiful Andrew Haigh film All of Us Strangers, which received no Oscar attention, not even for its outstanding leads Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal. The scene in question occurs after screenwriter Adam (Scott) returns from his parents’ home, where he just came out to his mother,...

Wednesday’s announcement that the British government would be introducing the new Independent Film Tax Credit sparked a response that was nothing short of jubilant across the entire sector.
The incentive — a 53% expenditure credit that equates to a tax relief of approximately 40% for U.K. productions with a budget of up to £15 million ($19.2 million) — was labeled by BFI chief executive Ben Roberts as “the most significant policy intervention since the 1990s.” Elsewhere, the likes of Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas, Barbara Broccoli, Andrew Haigh, Gurinder Chadha, Mike Leigh, Steve McQueen, Ridley Scott, Riz Ahmed, Jonathan Glazer, Gareth Edwards Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner were among the chorus of filmmaking heavyweights celebrating the news.
Speaking to Variety a day later, Roberts underlines the impact the credit could have on the independent sector, which — while inward investment has boomed over the last decade — has found itself at a point of crisis, with...

Andrew Haigh’s brilliant, blistering drama All Of Us Strangers will hit digital platforms next week. More on that news below.
All Of Us Strangers is an early contender for the film of the year. Andrew Haigh’s drama is a brilliantly complex and devastating look at grief and Andrew Scott shines in the lead role.
Scott plays Adam, a struggling writer, who has a chance encounter with a fellow neighbour of an empty London tower block, Harry (Paul Mescal). As the two explore their undeniable connection, Adam also begins to visit his childhood home, where, much to his surprise, his parents are still living, despite having died some 30 years ago.
The film was critically acclaimed, with Scott’s performance particularly praised and rightfully so. Our own Simon Brew said this in his kind-of-review: “I think films like these come along a couple of times a decade if we’re...

[Editor’s note: this story was originally published in January 2024. We updated and recirculated it in advance of the 96th Academy Awards on March 10.]
The Oscars are a cruel, selective beast. With only 10 movies recognized in the Best Picture race, and five entries in every other category, it’s an unfortunate reality that many high quality, deserving films each year will end up with nothing on nomination day.
The 2024 Oscar class is no different, with plenty of cries of snubbery coming out after their January 23 announcement. Most of the discussion has been taken up by the shocking blanks for Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig, who missed out on Best Actress and Best Director respectively for their work on “Barbie,” the indisputable film juggernaut of the year. Other major surprises included Charles Melton missing out for his breakout turn in “May December,” and Leonardo DiCaprio getting left out of the Best Actor race for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” Other surprises proved of the more pleasant sort, with on-the-bubble contenders making it in like Robbie...

BFI London Film Festival has announced their festival dates for 2024 and we’ve already marked our calendars.
It might only be March, but it’s never too late to start looking forward to all the amazing film festivals heading our way this year.
The biggest UK festival, without a doubt, is the BFI London Film Festival. The BFI has today announced this year’s festival dates, so get those diaries ready.
The BFI London Film Festival (or Lff) will take over London from 9th – 20th October. We can expect the usual amount of glitz and glamour once again as Hollywood stars walk the red carpets in Central London, where it usually rains that time of year. Nothing quite like seeing Hollywood’s finest battling gusts of wind while posing for photos.
In recent years, Lff has made a point to extend the festival outside of the capital. We’ve written...

Milo Ventimiglia was just 19 years old and starting out in Hollywood when he was cast as a gay teen in the 1996 short, “Must Be the Music.” You’d think his team would have advised him not to play queer, but Ventimiglia says he received nothing but support to sign on.
“I played a gay teenager who is going out with his friends, meets a guy but his buddy’s best friend is already kind of sweet on that guy,” Ventimiglia remembered. “Then he ends up giving them a ride home and he gets the guys number. It was a very sweet story.”
The short was produced by Gus Van Sant.
“That’s the great thing about being an actor,” the “This Is Us” star said at the Film Independent Spirit Awards on Sunday. “You play a lot of different roles. You represent a lot of roles. You represent a lot of stories.

Andrew Haigh’s All of Us Strangers won Film of the Year and LGBTQ Film of the Year honors from the Dorian Film Awards, the annual honors bestowed Galeca: The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics.
The Searchlight drama starring Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal as two troubled souls who fall for each other in lonely London, also scored a leading third win, LGBTQ Screenplay of the Year, for Haigh’s script. It led all nominees this year with nine.
“Twelve years ago, Andrew Haigh’s fresh and observant queer romance Weekend ruled our Dorians as well,” Galeca president Walt Hickey said Monday in revealing the awards. “So the fact that Strangers obviously touched many of our members’ hearts as well counts as sort of a sweet homecoming to our organization.”

Another big award show took place this weekend (in addition to the SAG Awards), the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which celebrates indie film and TV. One thing about this awards show is that their idea of independent sometimes makes me scratch my head a bit, with HBO’s big-budget The Last of Us nominated a whole bunch in the TV category, along with Netflix’s Beef and several other streaming shows, which I’m not sure one could call independent. For films, there’s a $30 million budget cap. For TV, I’m honestly not sure what the benchmark is because Last of Us was notoriously an expensive show to shoot, costing at least $100 million.
Indeed, The Last of Us won some key awards on the TV side, winning Best Supporting Performance (for Nick Offerman) and Best Breakthrough Performance (for Keivonn Montreal Woodard). Over on the film side, American Fiction and...

Plenty of A-List stars were in attendance at the event on Sunday afternoon (February 25) at the Santa Monica Pier in Santa Monica, Calif.
Movies are only eligible for a Spirit Award if they have a budget of less than $30 million, so there are some awards favorites like Barbie, Oppenheimer, and Killers of the Flower Moon that are not nominated.
American Fiction, May December, and Past Lives lead the pack this year with five nominations each.

It’s a big weekend on the campaign trail. The SAG Awards take place on Saturday, and both the Independent Spirits Awards and Producers Guild Awards are on Sunday. The contender to watch this week: “The Zone of Interest“

All of Us Strangers (Andrew Haigh)
There are many films about the devastating effects of the AIDS crisis, but very few that grapple with the loneliness of those left behind or came of age as it began to make headlines. Through supernatural metaphor, Andrew Haigh’s latest––and best––film tackles the existential displacement of a gay man (Andrew Scott) fast approaching middle age, his isolation only underlined by the near-abandoned tower block in which he lives. His friends have long moved out of the city, he has to maneuver a generational divide with a new, younger romantic partner (Paul Mescal) whose adolescence was far different to his, and he feels a longing to return to his childhood and come out to...

Killer Films had a killer 2023, and 2024 is looking equally rosy for the beloved independent production company. Fresh off the heels of scoring a Best Picture nomination for “Past Lives” (the company’s first-ever nomination in that category), co-founder Christine Vachon and Killer Films will be honored at the 6th Annual Kodak Film Awards February 23 with the Film Production Company of the Year award, alongside Celine Song, Ava DuVernay, Hoyte Van Hoytema, Petra Collins, Andrew Haigh, and the limited series “Swarm.”
Although digital continues to be the norm for film productions, 2023 proved to be a banner year for movies shot on film, as evidenced by the breadth of work from this year’s Kodak Film Award honorees, ranging from Song’s intimate “Past Lives” to Hoytema’s epic work on “Oppenheimer.” And 2024 looks equally promising for devoted fans of movies shot on film, with the buzzy releases of “Challengers,” “Nosferatu,” and more.

Best Adapted Screenplay is one of the most interesting categories at the Oscars this year. “Barbie” has been shoved into that lineup after months of campaigning in Best Original Screenplay pitting it against the likes of awards titans “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” Coming on strong is “American Fiction,” which writer-director Cord Jefferson adapted from Percival Everett‘s 2001 novel “Erasure.”
He followed up his Adapted Screenplay win at the Critics Choice Awards with a victory at the BAFTAs, triumphing over rival nominees “All of Us Strangers” (Andrew Haigh), “Oppenheimer” (Christopher Nolan), “Poor Things” (Tony McNamara), and “The Zone of Interest” (Jonathan Glazer). But what sets his adaptation the part as the best of the pack?
“To me, the key to a great adaptation isn’t keeping close to the source material, it’s keeping close to the way that the book makes you feel. The essence and spirit of what the author was trying to accomplish.

After nearly a decade of the BAFTA and Oscars failing to match on their choice for Best Picture, you can probably take it to the bank that this year that streak will be broken. Oppenheimer continues its flawless roll toward the Academy Awards, adding seven wins at BAFTA on Sunday including the big prize to its previous triumphs at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice and DGA awards. It is all going according to plan.
And after a similar Oppenheimer-style sweep at last year’s BAFTAs with seven wins for its All Quiet on the Western Front, Netflix was shut out this year despite coming in with seven nominations for Masestro and 12 overall. For that matter every single streamer was pretty much royally snubbed, to use my best British term, including an even bigger loss for Apple...
