- Cosma Shiva Hagen (born May 17, 1981 in Los Angeles, California) is a German-American actress and the daughter of new wave/punk singer Nina Hagen and musician Ferdinand Karmelk. Her grandmother is actress Eva-Maria Hagen, and her step-grandfather is the East German dissident writer Wolf Biermann. Eva-Maria Hagen was allowed to emigrate to West Germany during the 1970s. Shiva's unusual name was picked by her mother, who claimed she saw a UFO while pregnant. "Cosma" is a reference to Cosmos, and "Shiva" is a reference to the Hindu God Shiva.
Shiva is largely unknown outside of German-speaking countries. Although she speaks English, her acting roles have been largely confined to German language films and television productions. She also starred in an Irish film called Short Order (2005).
Born in Los Angeles, California, Shiva speaks German, English, French and Spanish. She grew up in London, Berlin, Paris and Ibiza. She attended boarding schools near Lüneburg and later in Hamburg. After graduating from secondary school, she dropped out of school and left her parents' home at the age of 14 after joining the "punk scene". She made her TV debut as a drug-addicted teenager in Petra Haffter's "Crash Kids" from 1996. After the television multi-part series "The Shop", Cosma Shiva Hagen was awarded the "Golden Camera" for "Best Young Actress" and the "New Faces Award" in 1999. In 1999 she appeared in front of the camera for "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Marlene" and a Tatort production. For the role of "Liz" in "Bella Block - Crime and Punishment" she was nominated for the "Best Supporting Role" at the "German Television Prize" in 2001. From 2001 to 2003 she accompanied radio play productions such as "Killer Country" (SWR), "2001 Rilke Project: In my wild heart" (BMG), "Daughter of the Nile" (WDR) and "I love my India" (WDR). In 2002 she portrayed "Rosa Perez" in the ZDF production "Nachtschicht Amok", and with her second major film role "Dirty Sky", Cosma Shiva Hagen established herself among the promising young talents in German film. With great media interest, Cosma Shiva Hagen created a photo series for the German edition of "Playboy" magazine, which was published in February 2003.
For the Otto Waalkes comedy "7 Dwarves - Men Alone in the Forest" from 2004, Cosma Shiva Hagen took on the role of Snow White. The sequel followed in 2006. In addition to her screen successes, she also devotes herself to theater.
