2012

2012

Directed by: Roland Emmerich

Cast: John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Amanda Peet, Oliver Platt, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover, Woody Harrelson

Running Time: 2 hrs 38 mins

Rating: PG-13

Release Date: November 13, 2009

Plot: The world is about to end. Turns out the Mayans were right. A select few people are in on the ground work of saving the human race, while others, like Jackson Curtis (Cusack), are trying to desperately save their families from the mass destruction of the entire planet.

Who’S It For? This film doesn’t even allow you to turn off your brain. Just like 10,000 BC and The Day After Tomorrow there are enough head-scratching moments, if you want to laugh at the film. But If all you live for is special effects, I can’t stop you.

Expectations: Who doesn’t love John Cusack? Not me. I don’t not love Cusack. Plus, I’m a big fan of Ejiofor and Peet, »

Oscar-talk: Best Actress contenders! Is it too early for Saoirse Ronan to win an Oscar?

There is something to be said about Kate Winslet's acceptance speech at the Academy Awards. After five nominations, Winslet finally won Best Actress! It's really about time. When she mentioned Meryl Streep, I took notice of the generations of actresses in attendance and that both Streep and Winslet belong differently. - - -

- - - This year, will someone from a much younger generation takes home the Oscar? I wonder will it be Saoirse Ronan for The Lovely Bones? Many are probably rooting for Carey Mulligan (An Education) to win and there are also many Oscarwatchers pinning their hopes on the older generation - will it be Dame Helen Mirren for The Last Station or will it be Meryl Streep's year yet again for Julie and Julia?

New Portman, Gyllenaal thriller 'Brothers' a remake of Danish thriller 'Brødre" by Susanne Bier

12 November 2009 1:25 PM, PST | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

Lionsgate will release Brothers, a new thriller about a returning war veteran starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey MaGuire, and Natalie Portman nationwide in the United States on December 4, 2009.

But did you know it is a remake of a Danish film, Brødre, from 2004 written and directed by Susanne Bier?

“In our part of the world, we’re dealing with an abstract war, a war we can’t see that we’re in, which is a very strange thing,” Bier told journalist Jessica Winter in 2004 when the film was released during the London Film Festival, not long before Bush started pulling out all the stops in Fallujah. “It’s not tangible, but it’s there, and that must be really terrifying for most people...”

Bier's film was terrifying and emotionally devastating. Hopefully the remake will have as much of an impact and not skimp on the violence or consequences of war and mental instability. »

Duncan Jones’ Mute Script Details

12 November 2009 11:11 AM, PST | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Duncan Jones, the director and co-writer of this years stupendous “Moon” was supposed to be gnawing away feverishly on the film “Mute” about a deaf bartender in Berlin trying to find his missing girlfriend. However, Duncan has instead been persuaded to work on the film “Source Code” with Jake Gyllenhaal, about a guy repeatedly sent back in time 17 minutes before a terrorist explosion on a train to puzzle out what happened in order to prevent it from happening again. So we won’t be seeing “Mute” for a few years. According to the fine fellows at ScriptShadow, it’ll be worth the wait. They have the whole shebang apparently, ready for your e-reader of choice. Here’s a part of the larger synopsis: “Mute” centers on a brutish 40 year old man named Leo, who lost his ability to speak in a childhood boating accident. The cautious and perceptive Leo lives in Germany now, »

The Week in Film: Oscar Bait

12 November 2009 9:02 AM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why, hello, folks! Another week means another week closer to December, which means it’s another week closer to Oscar bait movies. Aren’t you curious? I know you are, so let’s begin!

First up, we have 2012. It’s one of those natural disaster movies, but this time, on a global scale. The whole thing is based on the end of the world that in turn is based on the Mayan calendar. Expect super visual effects in the likes of things blowing up, giant tsunamis, raining meteors, skyscrapers collapsing, and Godzilla. Oh wait, scratch that last one.

Okay, sure this isn’t Oscar bait. But still, if you’re feeling like July in November, go for it! Oh, yeah, 2012 stars John Cusack, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Oliver Platt, and Amanda Peet.

The second of the two wide releases this week is Pirate Radio. In the 1960s, a bunch of DJs went on a boat, »

Gemma Arterton Says Working on Prince of Persia Has Been "Brilliant"

12 November 2009 7:15 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

British actress Gemma Arterton has become the "it" girl of action movies recently. First, she starred alongside Daniel Craig as Strawberry Fields in Quantum of Solace, then she landed the role of Sam Worthington's love interest in Clash of the Titans, and soon she will be appearing as Princess Tamina opposite Jake Gyllenhaal's Prince Dastan in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Arterton discussed how working on such high-profile projects is changing her life.

I'm really starting to feel it. Things have changed very quickly. Usually, I can kind of get on with my work and not think about it but it's actually having an effect on my life now and that's fine. I just have to kind of get used to it I suppose but it has been really, really quick and hey, why not, you know? If it's gonna happen, »

Script Review: Duncan Jones’ Mute

12 November 2009 4:00 AM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

ScriptShadow has a review of the screenplay for Mute, the sci-fi noir project that Moon director Duncan Jones has been developing with Mike Johnson for the last few years. You may recall that Jones recently signed on to direct Source Code, with Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star. Jones had commented on Twitter that he decided to put Mute on hold because he got an offer he couldn't refuse, and that Mute is a "hard sell" in this economy. And now we know more. Mute is one of those personal projects that probably won’t appeal to anyone outside a tiny niche audience. It appears that Jones knows this, and is perfectly okay with it. “Moon” was never going to light up the box office either, yet it already has a rabid fanbase. The question is, does Mute satisfy on any level? Man, that's a really hard question to answer. What »

Jake Gyllenhaal "Prepared" for a Prince of Persia Sequel

11 November 2009 3:44 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal made a name for himself playing quiet, introspective characters in movies like Donnie Darko and Brokeback Mountain, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. But when the opportunity arose to star as Prince Dastan in Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Disney's live-action adaptation of the Ubisoft video game, Gyllenhaal told Coming Soon that he was attracted to the role because it was "unlike anything" he had appeared in before.

To play Prince Dastan, Gyllenhaal had to adopt an English accent, weight train extensively, and learn Parkour, the urban "free running" sport prominently featured in Casino Royale.

The development of the character was massively physical at first, just getting in shape and doing all that stuff and learning Parkour, learning how to swordfight, learning how to get into the mentality of a warrior, somebody who as written is someone who can really fight. That »
