- He is also a photographer, writer and journalist. As a photographer, he presented five personal exhibits with portraits and photographs from Bolivia, Nigeria and Haiti. As a writer he has published 15 books, four of them poetry, eight essays on literature, communication and arts. As a journalist he has written in more than 200 journals and magazines from Latin America, Europe and North America.
- From 1998 to this date he has been mainly involved with The Rockefeller Foundation's "Communication for Social Change" strategic framework in various countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Previously he was Project Director of "Tierramérica", a UNEP/UNDP regional environmental programme for Latin America and Conservation International's (Washington) communication adviser for Bolivia. He also advised the Fondo para el Desarrollo de los Pueblos Indigenas de America Latina y El Caribe, AusAID (Australian Aid) health programmes in Papua New Guinea, and UNAIDS in Mozambique.
- Over the years, his photographic work has been shown in various personal exhibits: Bolivian landscapes and people (Altiplano, 1989) and portraits of artists from Latin America (Retrato Hablado, 1990). After four years spent in Nigeria, he exhibited his photographs of children of Africa (Age of Inocence, Nigeria 1994 and (Bagaje Africano, Bolivia 1995). In Haiti, where he worked during three years, he did a series on people and landscapes (Trois-sur-Haiti, 1997) He has also participated in collective exhibits of Bolivian photographers: Imagenes de Bolivia (Paris, 1973), Reflejos y Transparencias (La Paz, 1988), Nueve Fotografos (La Paz, 1990), Paisaje y Medio Ambiente (La Paz, 1995). Some of his photographs have been distributed by Gamma, and through the German news agency DPA, along with his articles on Latin American culture. Some of his photographs have been included in "coffee-table" books such as: Realizando el Futuro published by the Corporacion Andina de Fomento (CAF), Ciudad de La Paz, Luz, Magia y Tradicion published by the Municipality of La Paz, Imagenes del Trabajo along with other photographs awarded at the 4th International Art Contest organized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in 1986. His photographic work has been used in book covers, calendars, magazines and journals of Latin America. In 1983 he wrote the first historical perspective on Bolivian photography, which was published in the monthly journal Bolivia 2000 with the title Primera Aproximacion a la Fotografia en Bolivia. Later, in 1986 Condor, a quarterly review published his article Breve Vistazo a la Fotografia Boliviana, in Switzerland. He is currently preparing a book, the first of its kind, on the historical development of Bolivian photography. He is a founding member of the Bolivian Society of Photography (Sociedad Boliviana de Fotografia) and was appointed Secretary of Media Relations for the 1986-1988 period. He was elected President of the Bolivian Circle of Professional Photographers (Circulo de Boliviano de Fotografia) for 1995-96.
- As a writer, he has published over twenty books, poetry, narrative and studies on literature, film and communication: Provocaciones (1977); Historia del Cine Boliviano (Mexico, 1982); Cine, Censura y Exilio en America Latina (1979); Les Cinemas d'Amerique Latine (France, 1981) in collaboration with French film critic Guy Hennebelle; Luis Espinal y el Cine (1986); Las Radios Mineras de Bolivia (1989) editor, in collaboration with Bolivian journalist Lupe Cajias; Comunicacion Alternativa y Cambio Social (1990); NGO Puzzle (Nigeria, 1993); Popular Theatre (Nigeria, 1994); Bolivie (France, 1981). La Mascara del Gorila (Mexico, 1982), his own account on the Bolivian military coup of 1981, which was awarded with the National Literature Award of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes of Mexico (INBA). His most recent work is Making Waves: Participatory communication for social change (New York, 2001).
