Like many independent filmmakers, Anthony Gomez has some quibbles with his own work. He wishes he’d had more time to shoot. His lead looks natural on camera but the voiceover delivery is stiff. A friend came through with some original music, but the post process was crazy. The usual stuff. What’s unusual is that Gomez, 26, made his most recent film, a short documentary about working out, while living inside San Quentin State Prison.
“It’s the first time I’ve had my parents say they’re proud of me since I graduated from high school,” Gomez says of the videos he has directed, starred in and contributed to while inside San Quentin. Among the highlights is a series of mockumentary shorts inspired by The Office. Staring deadpan into the camera after the guy next to you says something stupid, it turns out, is a cinematic language that translates to workplaces everywhere.

In a stunning upset, Bong Joon Ho’s black comedy “Parasite” almost swept the 92nd Academy Awards on Sunday night, making history along the way.
“Parasite” became the first foreign-language film to win best picture. Its victories in the international feature film, director and original screenplay categories were also a first for a South Korean movie. The film only lost in two categories: film editing and production design. Taika Waititi nabbed adapted screenplay for “Jojo Rabbit.”
“Parasite” beat out Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story,” Todd Phillips’ “Joker” — which had led nominations with 11 — Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Sam Mendes’ “1917,” James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari,” Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” for the top prize.

Since working together on The Hangover Part III, director Todd Phillips, editor Jeff Groth and director of photography Lawrence Sher have become something of a creative dream team. The three honed their collaboration skills on the last film in the blockbuster comedy trilogy, followed by the dark comedy War Dogs. But Warner Bros.’ Joker, an intense character study of the comic book villain (and their third collaboration), is by far the most complex endeavor they have made together. It is a film that both Groth and Sher believe is very much a sum of its collaborative parts.

The 92nd Academy Awards are right around the corner, and it’s already a historic night for Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” as it’s the first South Korean nominee to compete in all six of its nominated categories: Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature Film, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Production Design. “Parasite” is the rare foreign-language film to compete for two of the biggest Oscars (Picture and Director), but those are not the nominations Bong most treasures. In a recent interview with The Wrap, Bong said he’s most excited “Parasite” landed its craft nominations.
“I’m particularly happy with the Best Editing and Best Production Design nominations for the film — for the film to be acknowledged for its craft and below-the-line work,” Bong said. “For Korean cinema, a lot of people in the international community only know the auteurs, the directors, but we have...

“A Star Is Born” was Warner Bros.’ big Oscar contender at the 2019 Academy Awards, and this year the studio landed the most Oscar nominations for a single film with comic book movie “Joker,” which is set to compete in 11 categories when the ceremony takes place next month. What do these two Warner Bros. Oscar power players have in common? The answer is Bradley Cooper. The “A Star Is Born” filmmaker served as a producer on “Joker,” but it turns out his role was much greater and more hands on than some fans might expect. “Joker” editor Jeff Groth recently told Collider that Cooper was an instrumental figure in the “Joker” editing room.
“We kept this one pretty close to us,” Groth said when asked about test screening the film. “We screened it more personally for people and filmmakers. Bradley Cooper definitely came in a couple of times. He was a producer on the movie,...

This year’s Best Editing Oscar race among “The Irishman,” “Parasite,” “Joker,” “Ford v Ferrari,” and “Jojo Rabbit” is marked by unconventional characters and demanding narratives. There are complicated flashbacks (“The Irishman”), an unreliable narrator (“Joker”), imaginary relationships, a tricky two-hander (“Ford v Ferrari”), and a volatile ensemble piece (“Parasite”). And they all possess dream-like qualities to their life lessons.
“The Irishman” marks Martin Scorsese’s summary movie about mob life told from the perspective of hitman Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro), who recounts his conflicted life in trying to appease both crime boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). “It’s a different view of mob rule than Marty’s previous movies,” said three-time Oscar winner Thelma Schoonmaker, the director’s long-time editor of nearly 40 years. “He wanted to do brushstrokes with history that were relevant to the characters, not make a documentary about Jimmy Hoffa.

It was a historic day for Korean cinema as the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards were announced earlier today. Kicking things off was “In the Absence” by Yi Seung-jun and Gary Byung-seok Kam, a documentary on the tragic sinking of Mv Sewol ferry in 2014, which was nominated in the Best Documentary Short Subject category. A short while later, “Parasite” took centre stage. And let’s not forget one more Asian Title within the nominations, the Award-Winning Stop-Motion Animation “Sister” by Siqi Song.
The Bong Joon-ho directed thriller made history once again by becoming the first Korean film to be nominated for Best Picture, while Bogn also became the first Korean director to be nominated for Best Director. The film ended the nominations announcement ceremony with six nominations in all, including three of the so-called “big categories”. Chicago – In a sense of deja vu from the recent Golden Globe Awards, the nominees for the 92nd Academy Awards has been named on January 13th, 2020. This breaks a precedent of the last ten years, with the Oscar ceremony moved up to February 9th from it’s usual position in late February to early March.
Nine films were named in the Best Picture category, with “Little Women” and “Ford vs. Ferrari” joining the seven other films recognized by the Golden Globes (including Best Foreign Language Film Globe winner “Parasite”). “Joker” led the numbers game with 11 nominations, with 10 nods for “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman.” The Best Actress category was exactly the same as the Globes (Drama), and Leonardo Di Caprio is the only difference in the Best Actor column. As at the Golden Globes, the directing category is the same five men, again snubbing Greta Gerwig for “Little Women.

Editor Jeff Groth worked with “Joker” director Todd Phillips on “The Hangover Part III” before landing the blockbuster drama starring Joaquin Phoenix.
You cut the film as consecutively as possible so you could see the progression of the character while you were still editing. Can you talk a little bit about that?
With a movie called “Joker,” you know quite solidly where you’re going to land at the end. So it was about how are we getting and moving forward to that? It’s [about] the progression from beginning to end. It starts in one particular place and ends in another; we always look and kind of see where we were in our timeline of Arthur [transforming into] Joker.
You were also able to cut the movie with some of the score rather than temp track — did that make a difference to the editing process?

The influential Ace Eddie Awards nominees for editing include the prestige dramas “Ford v Ferrari, ” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite,” Left out was Sam Mendes’ late-breaking bold, single-cut “1917” from Oscar-winner Lee Smith (“Dunkirk”), which does not bode well for an Academy Award nomination. Best Picture contender “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” made the cut as a comedy nominee along with “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” and “Knives Out.”
This makes for a competitive Oscar race, with three-time Academy Award-winner Thelma Schoonmaker as the frontrunner for “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese’s deeply personal, character-driven, non-linear ode to mob life, complicated by Ilm’s experimental VFX de-aging of Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci. “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Quentin Tarantino’s complex love letter to Tinseltown, should earn a nomination for Fred Raskin; Todd Phillips’ bending of reality and fantasy around...

The American Cinema Editors nominations for the Eddie Awards announced on Wednesday (December 11) include our Oscar frontrunner for Best Film Editing, “The Irishman,” along with three of the other four films we’re predicting to reap bids in that race: “Ford v Ferrari,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite.” While the WWI epic “1917,” which is made to look like one continuous shot, was snubbed by the guild we expect it to be the fifth Academy Awards contender.
The Ace Eddie Awards divide their prizes for editing between dramas and comedies/musicals. “Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman” and “Parasite” contend here in the drama race, which is rounded out by “Joker” and “Marriage Story.” Facing off against “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” on the comedy side are “Dolemite is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “Knives Out.”

“Ford v Ferrari,” “The Irishman,” “Joker,” “Marriage Story” and “Parasite” have been nominated in the dramatic-film category at the American Cinema Editors’ Ace Eddie Awards, which honor the best in film editing.
In the comedy category, the nominees were “Dolemite Is My Name,” “The Farewell,” “Jojo Rabbit,” “Knives Out” and “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood.”
The most notable omission was “1917,” which contains dozens of cuts but was designed to look as if it was filmed in one continuous, unbroken shot.

The phenomenon that is “Joker” continues to break records, as Oscar buzz grows for Joaquin Phoenix and several other categories. It is a film filled with visual and sonic clues to help tell the story of his emotional journey – wherever it takes him.
From the squeaking of the apartment door to the single cello becoming a full orchestra, to the costume design. It’s all there to tell you the story, to complement the story and aid with the emotional journey we go on with Fleck as he descends and transforms into Joker. Watch closely as he ascends the stairs: He ascends as if he’s carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, as he heads up those stairs, home. By the end, it’s a different demeanor entirely. The clues are all there.
Editor Jeff Groth says “The first goal of the editing was to stay out of the way.

This season’s top three editing contenders, “The Irishman,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Joker,” offer complex and confounding narratives. They challenge conventions of reality, fantasy, history, and memory, which definitely enrich their stories about stardom, violence, love, and death.
Martin Scorsese’s go-to editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, aims for her fourth Oscar win with the gangster epic, “The Irishman.” It’s the director’s summary statement about “loyalty, love, trust, and ultimately betrayal.” Robert De Niro’s elderly mob hitman, Frank Sheeran, looks back on his violent life and divided loyalties between cunning Philly crime boss Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci) and hot-headed Teamsters leader Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The narrative contains a dense, zigzagging structure, complicated by Industrial Light & Magic’s innovative VFX de-aging of the three actors. This meant that Schoonmaker’s editing was made more difficult by the quality of the facial animation. Scorsese would carefully...

Despite whatever members of the cast and crew have to say, Todd Phillips’ Joker is a comic book movie. In fact, it’s the boldest and most shattering addition to the comic cinema canon since Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
So far, the slow-burn film has shared in many of the riches and interactions of the genre, grossing humungous amounts of money (nearly $550 million at the time of writing), and, of course, being dissected by fans for easter eggs and homages to the expansive Batman universe.
From what we can tell, Phillips certainly has not disappointed in that department – with references to Heath Ledger’s iconic portrayal as well as Ratcatcher, of all people, having already been uprooted by viewers.
Now, another one has popped up that doesn’t quite fit into Joker‘s eerie tone. Strangely enough, there’s a reference to the classic Batman ’66 TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward.
So far, the slow-burn film has shared in many of the riches and interactions of the genre, grossing humungous amounts of money (nearly $550 million at the time of writing), and, of course, being dissected by fans for easter eggs and homages to the expansive Batman universe.

Todd Phillips’ Joker is a polarizing picture to say the least. Having only been screened at the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals, the original origin story has drawn up as much controversy for its excessive violence as it has acclaim for its lead performance from Joaquin Phoenix.
We Got This Covered had the opportunity to speak with editor Jeff Groth – who’s worked with Phillips on both War Dogs and The Hangover Part III –about the world’s reaction to the film thus far, as well as Phoenix’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime, among other topics.

First of all, congratulations on the film. I did see it in Toronto, and if I have anything to say about it, I think it’s going to be quite a success for you guys. With that said, there...

When Martin Scorsese directed “Taxi Driver” in 1976 and “The King of Comedy” in 1982, he was commenting directly on the contemporary world and on the damaged individuals trying to survive in it. When director Todd Phillips chose to set “Joker” in a 1981 that very much resembles those films (it’s Gotham City as “Fun City”) and with a character that seems to be an amalgam of Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle and Rupert Pupkin from those two classics, he seems to be doing so because he’s such a Scorsese fan.
After all, if you’re going to make a film about working-class people being crushed by the wealthy, and about a sociopath who inspires violent followers after committing crimes and going on television, 2019 is just sitting here.
Viewers will no doubt disagree about whether or not “Joker” should have been a period piece, but there’s no question that...

Warner Bros. Pictures has released the final trailer for director Todd Phillips Joker.
The film will be in theaters nationwide October 4.
Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
