The premise for the long-running sci-fi sitcom "Red Dwarf" is as hilarious as it is existentially troubling. On the show's titular mining ship, a ne'er-do-well slugabed named Dave Lister (Craig Charles) is thrown into the ship's suspended animation prison for a minor infraction. When the ship's sentient computer Holly (Norman Lovett) releases Lister from captivity, he finds that two million years have passed following a radiation accident that killed the crew. The ship has been adrift in the cosmos ever since, and its exact location is unknown. In order to prevent Lister from going mad from loneliness, the computer creates an interactive hologram of his old roommate, a snotty, incompetent do-gooder named Arnold Rimmer (Chris Barrie). They hate each other but have to work together as they may be the last vestiges of humanity.
Also on the ship is a mysterious, well-dressed dandy with no name (Danny John-Jules) who is,...

In Clive Barker's original short story "The Forbidden," published in Volume Five of his "Books of Blood" (called "In the Flesh" in the United States), the character of Helen is studying graffiti patterns in Liverpool as part of her college thesis research into urban legends. A lot of language in the original short story is devoted to the horrors of big city blight, and Helen aims to write a paper on "the semiotics of urban despair." As she delves further into Liverpool, she encounters repeated painted representations of the Candyman, a yellow-skinned ghoul with sharpened teeth and a hook hand, who is said to have committed many horrendous acts of violence in the neighborhood. In true Barker fashion, the protagonist's obsessions get the better of her, and she continues to probe until she encounters the actual Candyman.

Exclusive: The Jono McLeod-directed documentary My Old School, which made its world premiere at this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival, has landed at Magnolia Pictures. The specialty cinema label has taken North American rights to the docu, which features Alan Cumming. A July 22 theatrical release has been set.
My Old School unravels the astonishing true story of a mysterious new student who may not be who his Scottish classmates and teachers believe.
In 1993, 16-year-old Brandon Lee enrolled at Bearsden Academy, a secondary school in a well-to-do suburb of Glasgow. What followed over the next two years would become the stuff of legend. Brandon had been privately tutored in Canada while he accompanied his mother, an opera diva, on tour before her tragic death. The preternaturally bright student surprised teachers by blazing toward his goal of entering medical school, displaying a wealth of knowledge beyond his years. Brandon found friends despite his initial awkwardness,...

In 1993, six years after Johnny Depp and company were deemed too old to keep up the charade on “21 Jump Street,” Brandon Lee went back to Bearsden Academy. At least he said his name was Brandon Lee. Some people thought that was weird, since another Brandon Lee had just died a few months earlier. They also found it strange that this fifth-year transfer student — who claimed to be from Canada, the same country where countless teenage con men swear that their long-distance girlfriends live — looked so much older than everyone else.
If you grew up in Scotland, you probably (think you) know this story. If you’re from the relatively posh Glasgow suburb of Bearsden, the Brandon Lee saga is the stuff of local legend. But if you’re stumbling into “My Old School” unawares, as most of the film’s virtual Sundance audience did, then you have a lot...

For Richard Curtis it’s Gregory’s Girl, Gurinder Chadha prefers Tootsie and Katy Brand goes for Dirty Dancing. Whatever your relationship status, here are the film and TV romances to curl up with
When I wrote Four Weddings and a Funeral, I wanted it to be half as good as Gregory’s Girl. John Gordon-Sinclair is so natural, and his best friend, Robert Buchanan, is the funniest movie best friend ever. Then it has the most brilliant plot twist and the definitive final romantic conversation with Clare Grogan, dancing on her back under a tree. If anyone’s thinking of writing a romantic comedy, this is the place to start: not with Hollywood stars and pop songs, but with the low-key, local, truthful bliss of Bill Forsyth’s first masterpiece. From the director of the beloved Local Hero: ‘Pure Simple Joy’ is an apt way to describe this deceptively meek, completely endearing Scottish film with a universal theme about adolescence and the reality of teen love. John Hughes’ teen pix do not hold a candle to the innocent charm found here. The gawky yet boundlessly optimistic Gregory falls head over heels for the teenaged wonder girl of his dreams… his only problem is that she’s light years ahead of him in terms of maturity. But the female social system takes on the problem in what must be the most gentle (make that Utopian) view of high school ever. Writer-director Bill Forsythe struck independent hit gold.

You never heard of the Great Glasgow Ice Cream Wars? They weren’t exactly Armageddon, and the gentle director Bill Forsyth makes a radio personality’s involvement with two competing ice cream companies more of a plunge into amiable drollery. If you like Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero you’ll understand the odd, unhurried attitude of this oddball show from 1984.

Love story completes a trilogy of features.
Delirium, the latest film from British director Gareth Jones, has commenced principal photography in Surrey.
The story centres on a composer’s existential, familial and political crisis over the completion of a Requiem commissioned to celebrate his college’s centenary. A natural rebel flying in the face of academic authority, he finds himself both inspired and compromised by the arrival of a young cellist carrying secrets from his colourful past.
The film stars Gareth Jones, Clare Grogan, Timothy West, Mamta Kaash and cellist Alisa Liubarskaya.
Delirium is the third in a trilogy of feature films by Gareth Jones based on creative artists at a crossroads: blocked screenplay writer (Desire), traumatized war photographer (Delight) and now international composer with a record to defend.
A complete Requiem has been composed as part of the dramatic narrative of the film.
Alex Ryle completes the trilogy as director of photography as does producer/composer...

"Hard work being in love, eh? Especially when you don't know which girl it is."
It was a film without much of a plot, set in a little Scottish town where youths seemingly roamed around freely without a care in the world. Unless you were an awkward teenager by the name of Gregory, of course.
Bill Forsyth's cute 1981 comedy became a surprise hit around the world, and has now been given a makeover in a DVD and Blu-ray re-release. So, after 33 years, does the film still resonate today?
Gregory's Girl star Clare Grogan: 'We didn't expect lasting legacy'
The thing about Gregory's Girl that still resonates, is that not much happens. Compared to high school comedies of the past decade or so, where it's all risqué shenanigans and slapstick situations, this film is relaxed and easy-going, just like John Gordon Sinclair's Gregory himself.

Nobody wants to rock the boat when it comes to reassessing the classics, but face facts: Gregory's Girl is clunky, 2001: A Space Odyssey is never-ending, while Dirty Dancing is still brilliant
A few weeks ago I watched The Searchers, the 1956 John Ford horse opera that is routinely described by critics as one of the greatest films of all time. Scottish ministers have backed a plan to close down a school which was used in the classic film Gregory's Girl.
Earlier this year, North Lanarkshire Council approved plans to shut Abronhill High in 2014, before transferring students to Cumbernauld High.
Councillor Jim Logue said: "I welcome the Scottish government's decision and I am delighted that their review has found that our proposals will provide immediate educational benefits from merging the two schools.
"I have sympathy for parents and pupils involved who have expressed concerns about the impact of these changes.
"However, I would like to reassure them that we have considerable experience in successfully managing transitional arrangements."
Local community members had disapproved of the plan, as the closure may disrupt pupils' education, along with the school's cultural history.
Jamie Hepburn, Snp Msp for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, said he was "disappointed" by the decision.

The gangster film is one of the genres we tend to do better than anyone else here in the UK, and The Wee Man is shaping up to be a very promising entry into that genre.
Hitting UK cinemas in just over a month’s time, the film sees Martin Compston (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) star in the lead, based on the true story of reformed Glaswegian gangster, Paul Ferris. And with just a few weeks left to wait, we’ve had an impressive new trailer and poster sent our way to share with you.
“The story begins in the sixties. At the age of just eleven, Paul has already learned that life on the street is tough. Everybody knows his place. Poverty breeds corruption, crime, violence and bullying. Blackhill was the most notorious area of all.

It's all sandwiched between performances by Dollar and Altered Images, creating one of the most...

The Skins gang return in style on Monday 23rd January at 10pm on E4, burning their way through a holiday in Morocco.
But what begins as a hedonistic fortnight before their return to college turns into a living hell. By the time they return to Bristol everything has changed.
Friendships fall apart whilst complicated and toxic relationships begin. And there are strangers in the mix who could either save or destroy them...
Franky (Dakota Blue Richards) goes through a sexual awakening that unleashes a wild and unpredictable side to her when she meets Luke (Joe Cole).
In Franky's wake trails Matty (Sebastian De Souza), deeply in love and about to get himself into even deeper trouble. Meanwhile Nick (Sean Teale) slowly begins to realise just what his brother sees in Franky.
Grace (Jessica Sula) and Rich (Alexander Arnold) are closer than ever, but the future holds something unexpected in store for them.

January might not be the most welcoming month - it's all a bit chilly and grey. So it's just as well that staying in is a pretty attractive option with all the fabulous television that's coming up. One of our most-anticipated returns has to be series six of Skins, of course. So when we got our hands on these brand new and beautiful promo photos, we couldn't wait to share them with you! Aren't they gorgeous? As well as seeing our favourites from series five, it's also our first chance to get a proper glimpse at newbie Sam Jackson, who's joining the cast as Alex. Exciting, right? We're also getting return guest appearances from Chris Addison, Giles Thomas, John Sessions, Clare Grogan, Dan Black and Josie Long - while new stars popping up (more)...

The Eighties Supergroup returned to the Let’s Dance For Comic Relief stage this evening.
We knew from the off that Toyah Willcox, Clare Grogan, Chesney Hawkes and Limahl stand no chance of winning the series, not when up against the hilarious Noel Fielding and side splitting Ade Edmondson but still they were worth a giggle or two.
The four stars strutted around – we couldn’t even call it dancing – to Greased Lightning and the best thing we could say is that Chesney Hawkes still has a nice tight bum!
Afterwards judge Rufus Hound said:
It was lovely. When I heard it was an eighties supergroup I hoped we would have Brucie out here doing the lambada with Nelson Mandela. It wasn’t to be.
Will you be voting for the Eighties Supergroup tonight? Leave your comments below.

Adrian Edmondson and an '80s supergroup have won the last two spots in the Let's Dance For Comic Relief final. The 54-year-old comedian topped the public vote in tonight's qualifier with an elegant rendition of ballet routine 'The Dying Swan', which ultimately descended into a slapstick fight with Bottom partner Rik Mayall. When asked by hosts Steve Jones and Alex Jones to sum up the prospect of performing in the Let's Dance final, Edmondson replied: "[It] makes me very nervous. I'm really just worried about whether Rik's gonna find out where I am next week or not." The '80s supergroup - consisting of Chesney Hawkes, Toyah Wilcox, Limahl and Clare Grogan - finished in the top three with their homage to classic musical Grease and faced off against I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here Now! (more)...

Toyah Willcox, Clare Grogan, Chesney Hawkes and Limah closed tonight’s Let’s Dance For Comic Relief.
The former pop stars were performing as ‘Eighties super group’, which is weird because Hawkes biggest hit ‘The One And Only’ was released in 1991.
Tonight the four almost legends danced to Greased Lightening, with Chesney looking like the perfect T Bird.
Toyah was quite cringe-worthy and wish she had done a lot less thrusting and gyrating….as it was a little vomit inducing.
After the routine judge John Bishop said: “It was like seeing a dream in front of me. This is like I was 16 and someone had transported me to the best party.”
Felix Dexter added: “It was fantastic, coming from a group with a combined age of 211 it was brilliant.”
While Jo Brand raved: “Absolutely fab.”

Chesney Hawkes has admitted that he finds it hard to focus during his rehearsals for Let’s dance For Comic Relief, because he is so in awe of his partner Clare Grogan.
The former teenage heart-throb will be performing with the former Eastenders actress (as well as Toyah Willcox and Kajagoogoo frontman Limahl) on tonight’s charity dance special and revealed that he used to have a huge crush on her when he was younger.
He told The Sun:
“I had a huge crush on Clare. All boys in the 80s loved her. I had posters of her and stickers on my pencil case.”
But his embarrassing memories have made him “clumsy” and he added:
“I’ve tripped Clare up and poked her in the eye. It’s Clare making me nervous, I keep seeing this vision. I’m like, ‘Come on my teenage crush’.”
But whether he drops Clare or not,...

Clare Grogan has revealed details of her guest role in Skins. Grogan will appear in this week's episode as the mother of Mini (Freya Mavor). "I play a mad mum who is a bit of a sad case," Grogan told the Daily Record. "She absolutely loves her daughter but the way she relates to her is by trying to be young and be her pal, as opposed to her mum. That's something I think a lot of people can identify with. It is quite a painful episode but really poignant." Grogan also revealed (more)...

Coming to you weekly from my vantage point in good old Blighty, it’s Slashfilm UK. Anglos and Anglophiles rejoice as every Friday I’ll be bringing you a round up of news, links and coverage specific to the motion picture comings and goings here in the UK. Sometimes we’ll be talking about films that have already played in the Us, other times it will be films that won’t make it to the Us for a good while yet, and from time to time you’ll read about films that will never make it to the Us at all. John Gordon Sinclair, Dee Hepburn and Clare Grogan were this week reunited at the Glasgow film festival for a 30th anniversary screening of the truly brilliant Gregory's Girl (sort of a Scottish Rushmore but even better) . The Guardian took this snap of them all, as they are now. Wonderful.

Thirty years after it won hearts the world over, the cast of Bill Forsyth's classic teen romance come together for an emotional anniversary screening
It was the kind of fanatical reception that they all assumed would be forever reserved for "real" movie stars. But last Sunday, 30 years after the quiet man they used to call "Bill the van driver" directed them together in a tiny low-budget Scottish film about a schoolboy's unrequited first love, the cast of Gregory's Girl walked up the red carpet to a sea of jostling TV cameras, flashing paparazzi bulbs and thrusting autograph hunters at the anniversary screening of what has become one of the most loved British films of all time.
The enduring allure of the film that catapulted Bill Forsyth into the British film industry elite has surprised no one so much as its stars, most of whom were in their teens when they made it.
