There are two sides to Mike Judge in Hollywood. There’s the TV star, who took a ton of heat but came out as one of the most daring and biting voices of satire in the 1990’s with Beavis and Butthead, and the successful maistream animator with a thirteen season run of the folksy and engaging King of the Hill. Then there’s the film director, who was cajoled into the theatrical Beavis and Butthead Do America, but has worked in live action ever since. He made two films for 20th Century Fox to see them abandoned theatrically, only for both 1999’s Office Space and 2006’s Idiocracy to now be regaled as cult classics. His most recent film, 2009’s Extract did not set the film world afire (Extract is now available on DVD and Blu-ray), but it showed a less biting Judge doing what he does best: everyday life comedy. »

When I'm offered a dinner with director Mike Judge, there's very little convincing needed.
Not only is Judge responsible for the underrated comedy "Extract" (available on DVD and Blu-Ray on Tuesday, Dec. 22) but he's also the sly genius behind Fox's Emmy-winning "King of the Hill," the 1990s iconic cartoon "Beavis and Butt-head" and one of the best workplace comedies of all time, "Office Space."
It was a cool December evening when my fellow reporters and I descended upon Joe's Restaurant in Venice, Calif., where a custom-designed four-course tasting menu with wine pairings awaited us. With the help of champagne, the conversation kicked off with talk of Comic-Con, which Judge said was filled with "very likable nerds."
Speaking of nerds ...
I am one for taking this picture. Yes, I was seated next to Mike Judge. Okay, my name is misspelled, but still -- Mike Judge!

The curated All Tomorrow's Parties is an annual gathering of the coolest bands your mom has never heard of, and this new documentary of the same name—co-directed by gay filmmaker Jonathan Caouette (Tarnation)— features a staggering lineup, including The Gossip, Nick Cave, Iggy Pop, Grizzly Bear (the gay-inclusive band is pictured above), Sonic Youth, Portishead, Daniel Johnston, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Belle and Sebastian, Patti Smith, The Mars Volta and many more.
Queer-inclusive British band Placebo tells their story in the new documentary The Sun Also Rises, which weaves together news reports, exclusive interviews, performance footage and other archival footage of the glam pansexual trio.

Remember that super-cute and super-rocking senior documentary Young@Heart, which hit screens last year? It's becoming a feature film, and The Hollywood Reporter posts that Working Title has found a new scribe in Will Reiser (I'm With Cancer). The rights had originally been bought back in 2007, and writer Bob Nelson had written a draft, but now, much like their senior subjects, the project is getting a new jolt of life.
As I hope you know by now, the film follows a chorus of senior citizens (average age of 80) who came together and toured -- not singing "old folks" songs for retirement homes, but all-out mainstream concerts featuring modern hits and classics from the likes of The Clash, Coldplay, and James Brown. The documentary dipped into their performances and their lives (some passed away during production).
Can you think of any movie that could be more fun on the big screen? »

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre invites you to look, listen and learn during an evening devoted to the great film director Alfred Hitchcock.
On Dec. 6, the theatre will host a free lecture by film expert Martin Leichter, "Hitchcock: The Mayhem Behind His Movies," about the director's 18th film, The 39 Steps. Leichter will serve as a tour guide to the film, illuminating key points, and telling the audience what to watch for in the 1935 thriller, which will be screened immediately following the lecture.
Nearly 30 years after his death, Hitchcock's name remains synonymous with great film. The silver screen would be decidedly less glittering without such masterpieces as Rebecca, Vertigo, The Birds, Psycho, Rear Window, North by Northwest and The 39 Steps. And who can forget his countless cameos on the big screen, and his droll introductions to his Alfred Hitchcock Presents television series?

With the recent release of Play The Game out in theaters scattered across the nation, I was able to talk to the writer and director of the independent comedy, Mark Fienberg.
Melissa: When it comes to creating David (Paul Campbell), how did you do it? Is there any sort of inspiration you drew from a family member, yourself or somebody?
Fienberg: Well, David as the ladies man was probably the ladies man that I hoped I would be someday, but not necessarily the ladies man I am. You know, all of the dirty tricks that you learn through the movie were deifnitely things that my friends and I developed when I was single. They always seemed to work with them but never worked for me so I didn’t know what I was doing wrong. The character, I think, is more of the guy that I dreamed about being than what I actually was. »

“In order to win in the game of love, you have to play the game.”
The catch phrase of the quirky independent feature rings true in Mark Fienberg’s Play The Game. Starring the talents of Andy Griffith, Paul Campbell, Marla Sokoloff, Liz Sheridan and Doris Roberts. This lighthearted comedic tale of finding romance through strategy, no matter what age you are, tries its hardest to branch out to a wide ranged audience. Though the film does have pockets where it falters in its pacing, loosing balance between whether or not the story decides to be a satirical take on the dating game.
The story revolves around David (Paul Campbell) who knows the ultimate list of playing the game in the dating world. When his grandpa Joe (Andy Griffith) comes to him for advice in getting back in the dating game, he makes the adventure of pursuing women. While helping his grandfather learn the tricks, »

The role of Pam’s mom on The Office has been filled by Linda Purl, a relative unknown whose biggest claim to fame was playing Andy Griffith’s daughter on Matlock.
Last month, Office producer, writer and co-star B.J. Novak said Mrs. Beasly probably wouldn’t be played by a well-known actress, and that was largely by design:
“That’s the rule we have stuck to on our show - it is supposed to be real average Joes, and casting a famous actor just takes away from that,” Novak said.
“We have only cast a famous actor when they can blend right in as was the case with Amy Ryan. Or if it makes sense for the role, like with Jack Black.”
Linda Purl makes her Office debut next month at Pam and Jim’s wedding.
Interestingly, though few may recall it, this is technically a recast. We first caught »

I didn't think The Office could top Amy Ryan. But then I found out that Greg Daniels & Co. decided to cast Linda Purl as Mrs. Beasley, Pam's mom. I know what you're thinking: "Huh? You're putting Linda Purl in the same league as Amy Ryan? Who is Linda Purl anyway?" Even EW's very own Ausiello referred to Purl as "a relatively unknown actress." Now, I'd like to take the opportunity to rile up my fellow Matlock fans and say: For shame! Unknown? Purl spent countless hours accompanying me on sick days, causing me to develop an unhealthy obsession with the show. I even flirted with the idea of becoming a lawyer thanks to Matlock, before I realized the job was more about paperwork and less about banjo-playing (bummer). And Purl? Why, she was just a peach. In fact, Purl was the third best thing about the show, right behind Andy Griffith and Kene Holliday, »

One of the most high-profile job openings in Office history — the role of Pam's mom — has been filled. And true to their word, producers resisted the urge to cast Meryl Streep. Or Goldie Hawn. Or Bonnie Hunt. Or...... anyone else whose name you'd recognize. Instead, the plum part went to Linda Purl, a relatively unknown actress whose biggest claim to fame was playing Andy Griffith's daughter on Matlock. Stop the presses! On second though, don't. It's not like I didn't see this coming though. Last month, Office producer/star B.J. Novak warned me that Mrs. Beasley probably wouldn't get an A- (or B- or C-) list portrayer. "That's the rule we have stuck to on our show — it is supposed to be real average Joes, and casting a famous actor takes away from that," he said. The Office has added a new cast member in Linda Purl, who you may remember as Andy Griffith's daughter on Matlock. According to The Ausiello Files, the seasoned actress will be playing the coveted role of Pam's mom on the popular sitcom.
Purl will make her debut next month during the long awaited nuptials between Jim and Pam. Shannon Cochran originally played Pam's mother for a brief moment in season two. There is no word on how many episodes Purl will appear in.
The Office returns this fall on Thursday, September 17th, only on NBC.

The folks at our sister site Cinematical are working hard to give you news and reviews of the best -- and worst -- the silver screen has to offer. Here are some of their musings on the latest blockbusters, indies, and everything in between: I do not ever, under any circumstances, wish to see Andy Griffith's "O" face. But if you're into that kind of thing, here ya go. For all of you Twihards out there: Cinematical has new images from New Moon. "Okay. It's like The Blob, but you know, without the blob thing. But it's totally a remake of The Blob. Get it?" It sounds like that's kind of how Rob Zombie's movie pitch went. I'm going to see The Final Destination this weekend. I have never seen any of the other movies in the series, and I do not give a single crap about the "plot" or "characters. »

With Betty White in The Proposal, there's been a lot of chatter about snarky old ladies. But they're not the only ones who get a little bit of modern fun. Way back in 2007, we learned that Andy Griffith -- The Andy Griffith -- was signing up for a father-and-son-getting-women comedy called Play the Game. Sounds weird enough to be a hoot, right? It's not every day an 81-year-old gets to star in a romcom. But it's a lot more than just romance. A lot. Maybe this will give you a hint, an excerpt from Roger Ebert's review of the film: "I've admired Griffith ever since No Time for Sergeants (1958), but the one thing I must admit I've never wanted to do was regard his face while he's enjoying oral sex from Seinfeld's mom."
Yes, folks -- Griffith gets a Viagra-aided oral sex scene. But we can't just hear about that with eye-scalded words. »

It’s the classic case of two people with opposite views learning from each other in the new romantic comedy Play The Game.
David Mitchell (Paul Campell) is great with people. He’s one one of those slick guys that can read anyone for self-gaining purposes, whether it be as a car salesman or in his journeys as a womanizer. When his job isn’t focused on selling cars at his fathers lot, it’s focused on fulfilling a promise to his late grandmother to teach his Grandpa Joe (Andy Griffith) how to date again. Grandpa Joe could really use the help too! The only problem is that David’s lessons are a bit much for Grandpa Joe, but if it helps him with the ladies, he will give it a shot. After all, he is rather lonely, and there are some fitting ladies in his retirement community. Next thing you know, »

Cast: Andy Griffith, Paul Campbell, Marla Sokoloff, Liz Sheridan
Running Time: 1 hr, 45 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: August 28, 2009
Plot: The story of a grandfather whose allegiance to his deceased wife trumps his need to “play the field.” When his witty-remark-a-second grandson pays him a visit, he opens his eyes to the plethora of opportunities for him to score. With the guidance of the young Casanova, Grandpa Joe learns how to “play the game.” It’s only when David (Campbell) meets Julie (Sokoloff) that he finds there’s more to the “game” than the rules he’s passed on to his granddad.
Who’s It For? Fans of films that hold true to the strict rules of the predictable sit-com format. This film is a by-the-book interpretation of how lessons are learned by those who think they’ve already figured themselves out.
