From the golden age of Canadian tax shelters comes a horror movie about a fiendish, fearful freighter fraught with frills, I mean, chills. A notable cast — George Kennedy, Richard Crenna, Sally Ann Howes, Kate Reid — shows up for paycheck duty, and must have gone through real torture getting this one in the can. It’s got a reputation, and if being ripoff-remade is a marker of success, then it’s earned its place on the horror map: See George Kennedy apparently really doused in awful oily bilge water!

At the turn of the ‘80s, Jamie Lee Curtis was The face of horror; by this point she had already starred in Halloween (1978), and cemented her position with three releases in 1980 alone – The Fog in February, Prom Night in July, and today’s title, Terror Train, in October. It was a banner year for her, and for horror fans alike – well, apart from that snoozy school picture. Terror Train was a great way to end her 1980, and a fitting way to cap off 2016, as it’s a – ta da! – New Year’s Eve movie. Climb aboard for a fun, surprisingly classy ride.
There just aren’t that many horror films that take advantage of the holiday. New Year’s Evil (also 1980) is probably the most well known, and uses the neat conceit of the killer performing a bad deed for every time zone to, sadly, dull effect. Terror Train doesn...

As part the Whistler Film Festival's continuous efforts to support local independent filmmakers, up to six producers from across Canada will be selected to participate in the Feature Project Lab, an intense two-phase business and creative content development experience for Canadian producers presented by the festival in association with Telefilm Canada. This year the program will take place in two separate phases: Phase I will take place over four days from June 21 to June 24 and includes four months of ongoing feedback and project development with advisors. Phase II includes a four-day follow up from December 1 to 4 during the Whistler Film Festival + Summit.
Focused on strengthening dramatic feature projects from script to screen, the Wff Feature Project Lab is intended to advance a producer’s dramatic feature project, facilitate relationships and investment in feature film projects that have U.S. and international appeal. Their goal is getting content made.
"The Feature Project Lab provides an unique opportunity for producers to get rigorous market feedback from seasoned veterans at the most critically important stage of their project's development,” said Paul Gratton, Wff’s Director of Programming. “It's a priceless learning and relationship-building experience that helps build careers and advance individual projects.”
Up to six Canadian producers will be invited to participate through an application process and applicants may enter a maximum of three projects for consideration. A selection committee consisting of two Wff representatives and two additional industry professionals, including a key international sales agent, will vet the applications and shortlist candidates for interviews before making final decisions. Two facilitators will provide a high level of strategic advice and counsel to producers over the course of the Lab helping them to address feedback from Industry Advisors. Producers will be required to revise and resubmit their packages by October 1, and will be assessed by October 15 to determine if they are eligible to advance to Phase II where they will regroup with their advisors, participate in a pitch boot camp and receive the opportunity to meet with and pitch international sales agents during the Whistler Film Festival + Summit.
Producers will receive individual and project specific feedback through a series of one-on-one sessions with Advisors, as well as group sessions in order to strengthen their ability to position their project for investment. Feedback will include everything from where to take their script to next, to what changes the project and package may require to attract investors outside of Canada, and what market resources are available to producers looking for U.S. interest. Producers will also explore their own creative take on their project and develop skills and a process for evaluating, developing, and implementing their material to reflect these ideas, and examine conventional and alternative distribution strategies, and learn what they need to do to stay relevant as media distribution platforms continue to evolve. Scripts will be discussed alongside issues such as creative imperatives, marketplace valuation and production challenges.
Canadian producers are invited to submit an application for the Wff Feature Project Lab by April 24, 2015. The application form and guidelines are available at www.whistlerfilmfestival.com

“I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass… and I’m all out of bubblegum.” John Carpenter fans remember this “Rowdy” Roddy Piper line from 1988’s They Live, but imagine if Piper said something similar to Cthulhu upon entering the demon city of R’lyeh. If this sounds epic, then you may be interested in funding Portal to Hell, a short film co-starring Piper and Cthulhu that just launched an Indiegogo campaign.
Portal to Hell is guaranteed to be made next March and contributions to the Indiegogo campaign will help fund the special effects creation. The better the film looks, the better its chances are of being turned into a feature film, as Portal to Hell’s creative team is planning on using the short film to pitch a full film version beginning next fall. Despite not being nominated for Best Director, Louise Archambault’s Gabrielle managed to pull off what we thought was the impossible (our Leora Heilbronn has pegged the drama as the film that should win, but favored Denis Villeneuve’s Enemy as the best bet) winning Best Motion Picture at the 2014 Canadian Screen Awards (a.k.a Canadian Oscars). If the out of synch supposed “live” telecast wasn’t bad enough (all awards including the winning film were announced almost one hour prior to on twittersphere), the show’s producers gave Gabrielle winning producers Luc Déry and Kim McCraw the equivalent of end of toilette paper roll in terms of time.

It's no secret we're big Cronenberg fans here at Dread, so we're happy to report filming has commenced for his 30-day shoot of Maps to the Stars, and we have the film's synopsis to share.
Per The Wrap, production on Maps to the Stars will run through August in Toronto and Los Angeles. Entertainment One and Prospero Pictures are co-financing the Los Angeles-set movie, previously described as a combo ghost story and critique of celebrity-obsessed society. Canadian actor will direct version of Atwood's bestselling true-crime tale, while James Franco signs debut novel deal
Sarah Polley is poised to direct an adaptation of Alias Grace, Margaret Atwood's 1996 novel about a double murder in the wilds of Canada. Based on a true-crime tale from 1843, the book spins the story of 16-year-old Grace Marks, who was convicted of the murder of a wealthy landowner and his mistress.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film will be handled by Polley's production outfit, Tangled Productions, with funding provided by Astral Media's Harold Greenberg Fund. "It's an ambitious project for her to take on," Alan Bacchus, programme manager at the Harold Greenberg Fund, told the National Post. "It's darker material. It can be shocking. It can be brutal. She cited some influences in her notes as well, like Days of Heaven and McCabe and Mrs Miller. The fact that she's going...

It's been a while since we've heard anything from Paul Haggis. He spent most of 2011 under the radar, with his name only popping up in connection with a potential franchise over at Universal based on the spy books by Daniel Silva. But it looks like Haggis' next paying gig is coming from his native land in the true north strong and free. Astral Media’s Harold Greenberg Fund in Canada has awarded "script financing" to "Paris," a political drama that Haggis will direct. And that's it. No plot details at all, but with the announcment comes word that the relatively unknown Dawn Kuisma will pen the script. So really, just toss this in the growing pile of Stuff That Paul Haggis Might Do Next that includes a redo of the Spanish genre hit "Cell 211" as well as his brewing international romance, "Third Person." Since "Paris" is at the script stage,...

While I’m never one to speak for others, I’d presume that the gap between Sarah Polley‘s 2007 debut, Away from Her, and her forthcoming Take This Waltz was a tad longer than most would have preferred. Whatever the cause behind that delay, she’s getting back into business pretty quick. As THR informs us, the actress is being granted some coin from the Harold Greenberg Fund (who are showing up in the news as of late) to adapt Margaret Atwood‘s Alias Grace through her Tangled Productions. Sound good already? Even better — it’s new territory for the still fledgling writer and director.
Grace will take Polley out of relationship dramas, with this being “a recreation of a true-life 19th century Canadian double murder, and takes readers inside the mind of Grace Marks, a 16 year-old housemaid who was convicted and jailed for killing a wealthy landowner and his housekeeper and mistress.

The past year or so has been an unsure one when it comes to Paul Haggis. One minute he’s doing another remake, the next he’s writing something for Michael Mann — and then, like that, there’s a franchise with his name on it. None of those, with the possible exception of Gold, have truly gone forward in that entire time, but THR has news that could put an end to that dry run.
As they tell us, the Oscar winner has signed to direct Paris, a political drama written by Dawn Kuisma. Any specifics pertaining to the plot are not currently at hand, but this being labeled a “Canadian theatrical feature” — part of which is rooted in funding from the nation’s Harold Greenberg Fund — leads me to ask if this goes behind the closed doors of the country’s politics. The Ides of Poutine? (Wow, that was terrible.
