HBO’s anthology series “True Detective” is back after five years with a new season that will compete at the 2024 Emmy Awards. This latest installment that premiered in January comes with the subtitle “True Detective: Night Country” and, while still part of the franchise, it’s the first to not have the involvement of creator Nic Pizzolato – other than his executive producer credit. It was instead developed by Issa Lopez who wrote (or co-wrote) and directed all six episodes, and stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as detectives in an Alaskan town investigating the disappearance of eight scientists. Let’s re-examine the three previous seasons of “True Detective” at the Emmys – which garnered a combined total of 22 nominations and five wins – to determine possible nominations in categories for the current season.
Here is the complete Emmys history for the first three seasons of “True Detective”:

Over the past three decades, few filmmakers have mastered their craft better than David Fincher. With a fastidious eye for framing and a deep focus on directorial details, Fincher has fashioned some of the most precisely orchestrated cinematic outings since his big screen debut in 1992. Yet, for most avid cinephiles and casual movie fans alike, Fincher will almost always be most associated with Se7en and Fight Club in the 90s and perhaps The Social Network and Gone Girl in the 2010s. If that’s an accurate assessment, then it begs the question – what is David Fincher’s all-time most underrated movie? While the recent release of The Killer is a worthy candidate, and a serious case can be made for Zodiac, The Game continues to be a criminally unheralded psychological thriller that, upon repeat viewings, toys and torments the audience with devious plotting and duplicitous tricks as only Fincher can forge.

HBO’s officially renewed True Detective for season five. Season four, True Detective: Night Country, was the most-watched season overall, drawing in 12.7 million viewers. It was also the first season that focused on women in the leading roles, and the first with Issa López in charge as writer, director, showrunner, and executive producer.
Showrunner Issa López will return in the same capacity for season five, and has just signed a new multiyear overall deal with HBO. The deal means López will create new content, including season five, for HBO and Max.
“From conception to release, Night Country has been the most beautiful collaboration and adventure of my entire creative life,” stated Issa López. “HBO trusted my vision all the way, and the idea of bringing to life a new incarnation of True Detective with Casey, Francesca, and the whole team is a dream come true.

Just yesterday, we heard that Tigers Are Not Afraid filmmaker Issa López, who directed and co-wrote all six episodes of the fourth season of the HBO anthology crime series True Detective (a season that’s known as True Detective: Night Country) “might” come back to do another season of the show. Now it’s a sure thing. Variety has broken the news that HBO has ordered True Detective season 5, and López, who has just secured new overall deal with the network, will be back at the helm.
True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto was the mastermind behind the first three seasons of the show, but once the third season wrapped up, his HBO deal expired and he signed a new (short-lived) deal with FX. HBO retained the ownership rights to True Detective, and with Pizzolatto gone they were interested in bringing in someone who had “a fresh voice with a different...

“True Detective” has been renewed for Season 5 at HBO. Issa López, the creator of “True Detective: Night Country,” will helm the fifth season under her new overall deal with HBO.
The renewal comes as little surprise, given the success of “Night Country,” which saw Jodie Foster and Kali Reis star in the fourth installment of the HBO anthology series. Per HBO, the season is the most-watched installment of the show to date, with 12.7 million cross platform viewers. The season finale on Feb. 18 was the most-watched episode of the season, drawing 3.2 million viewers across HBO and Max. That represents a 57% increase over the show’s premiere viewership in January.

True Detective is coming back for a fifth season at HBO.
Issa López, who served as showrunner for True Detective: Night Country, the fourth and most successful iteration of the crime franchise, will oversee the next installment as part of an overall deal she signed with the network.
It’s yet to be decided as to whether season five of True Detective will be related to Night Country or will be an entirely new story.
However, what’s clear is that, despite creator Nic Pizzolato’s criticisms, López’s season has brought a return to form for the True Detective universe, becoming the most-watched season with 12.7 million cross platform viewers.
As part of López’s new multiyear deal, she will also create new content for HBO and Max.

At 60 years old, Jodie Foster has gracefully accepted her new place in the industry as a mentor, offering her wisdom as a seasoned veteran to the next generation of actors navigating Hollywood.
“The part they don’t tell you when you turn 60 is that it’s so much fun because it’s not your time anymore. It’s someone else’s time, and the best part of getting older is realizing that you actually have something to give back. You have something to contribute, to help support other people’s performances, and to help spur other voices that haven’t been heard before,” said Foster.
It’s a sentiment her “True Detectives” co-stars echoed on the red carpet on Tuesday night (which comes days after Foster’s comments regarding Gen-z’s work ethic made headlines), telling Variety that they earned a master-class in acting from the “Nyad” star.

The new trailer for the upcoming season of HBO’s hit crime show True Detective has just been released courtesy of The Hollywood Reporter. Season 4 of the anthology brings audiences to Alaska, where the location is known for having days of constant sunlight as well as constant darkness. Both extremes have been depicted in films like Christopher Nolan‘s Insomnia and the vampire movie 30 Days of Night. This new trailer has Jodie Foster back at odds with a mysterious killer, which will ring memories of Silence of the Lambs, and she pairs up with Kali Reis to solve a case that seems to tread on supernatural elements. It also looks as if this season is connecting to past seasons with the reveal of a spiral marking that has been featured in season one and season three.

The latest trailer for True Detective: Night Country puts a strong emphasis on just how unsettling the long periods of darkness in Alaska can be.
The fourth season of HBO’s anthology series stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as two detectives — who evidently have some not-so-great history with one another — investigating the disappearance of eight scientists from an arctic research station as the months without sunlight descend on Alaska. “To solve the case,” the show’s logline reads, “Detectives Liz Danvers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reis) will have to confront the darkness they carry in themselves, and dig into the haunted truths that lie buried under the eternal ice.”
The trailer also expands on an earlier teaser by offering up a few more details about the case — and showcasing the crooked spiral iconography that’s a visual signature for True Detective, having featured in seasons one and three (which...

Ron Nyswaner, the executive producer and writer of the Showtime limited series Fellow Travelers, says that he feared there were three strikes against getting it made: “It’s period, it’s political and it’s gay.”

January brings a chill in the air — and to Max — with Season 4 of the crime drama series “True Detective.”
Jodie Foster and Kali Reis join the ranks of previous case solvers like Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Mahershala Ali, Taylor Kitsch, Colin Farrell, and Rachel McAdams with the latest season, set in the frigid darkness of Alaska, and where the sun literally never shines. Issa López serves as showrunner, writer, and director of all episodes, making this the first season without original series creator Nic Pizzolatto in the driver’s seat. He is on board as an executive producer, though taking a passive creative role this time.

HBO has unveiled the first trailer for the long-awaited return of "True Detective." The preview for the latest installment in the beloved anthology series, titled "True Detective: Night Country," was revealed during a big press event for Warner Bros. Discovery's new big streaming service Max, which will combine HBO Max and Discovery+ under one roof. As part of that, they unveiled our first look at the show's fourth season, which stars Jodie Foster ("The Silence of the Lambs") in the lead role.
This is the first time the show has been on the air since season 3 arrived in 2019, with Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali headlining that installment. Fortunately, with Max in need of high-profile shows, it paved the way for a new season, which looks like it will fit right at home with what viewers have come to expect. Let's have a look.

The original film editor for “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” needed her mind scrubbed clean after suffering from a “nervous breakdown” during the chaotic production, according to producer Anthony Bregman.
Bregman revealed to “Hollywood Gold” podcast host and fellow film producer Daniela Taplin Lundberg that the unconventional tactics behind the 2004 drama led to an editor (whom he did not name) being let go early in production. Valdís Óskarsdóttir eventually stepped in to finish the cut.

Just prior to the season finale episode, which will be released tonight on AppleTV+, the show Shantaram starring Charlie Hunnam has been axed by the streaming service. Stantaram is based on the lengthy 900-plus page novel by Gregory David Roberts and had a huge production with the ambitious, epic scope of shooting across two continents. Both of which had been impacted by the Covid pandemic.
The series started filming its first season, but production came to a pause in February 2020 when the pandemic was taking shape. Since the show filmed in multiple countries, production was not able to resume until May 2021 for the remaining ten episodes of the season. Actor Charlie Hunnam-starrer series ‘Shantaram’ will not be returning for a second season.
Its Season 1 finale, released tomorrow, December 16, will serve as a series finale, reports ‘Variety’.
Based on the Gregory David Roberts’ epic, 900-plus-page novel, Shantaram was an ambitious, big-scope undertaking, shot across two continents, which was impacted by the pandemic.
The series had shot two episodes before pausing filming in late-February 2020. Because of its expansive nature requiring filming in multiple countries, the series did not resume production on the remaining 10 episodes until May 2021.
‘Shantaram’, which hasn’t generated the level of buzz that some of Apple TV+’s popular titles have, follows Lin Ford (Hunnam), who escapes a maximum-security Australian prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of 1980s Bombay, gets entangled with a local mafia boss and eventually uses his gun-running and counterfeiting skills to fight against the invading Russian troops in Afghanistan. Exclusive: Fremantle has acquired True Detective and This England exec Richard Brown’s Passenger, with Brown landing a role within the super-indie’s Global Drama division.

Passenger, which launched when that deal was struck three-and-a-half years ago, will become a fully-owned Fremantle label, sitting within Christian Vesper’s Global Drama division. The deal is one of a spate Fremantle has unveiled in recent weeks.

HBO begins production on ‘True Detective: Night Country’
Season four of HBO’s critically acclaimed, award-winning drama True Detective has begun shooting in Iceland. The upcoming season is officially titled True Detective: Night Country and stars Oscar winner Jodie Foster and Kali Reis in leading roles.
Season one premiered in January 2014 and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. Given that filming is just now underway, season four’s likely 2023 premiere puts it four years out from the third season.
In addition to Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, True Detective: Night Country stars John Hawkes, Christopher Eccleston, Fiona Shaw, Finn Bennett, and Anna Lambe. Aka Niviâna, Isabella Star Lablanc, and Joel D. Montgrand also star.

“I feel good,” Charlie Hunnam said with a smile (and an asterisk) upon hitting the red carpet Monday night outside Westwood’s Bruin Theater, host of the world premiere of his new Apple TV+ series Shantaram.
The asterisk is necessary because Hunnam’s emotional state is understandably layered, especially on the eve of this long-gestating series based on Gregory David Roberts’ 2003 blockbuster novel finally being seen by the world. Shantaram casts Hunnam as the lead, Lin Ford, an on-the-run fugitive who escapes to Bombay, India, where he gets lost among the city’s vibrant characters in the often mysterious and seedy underbelly.
“When I wrap and the job’s over, I’ve already gone through the highs and the lows,” Hunnam explained to The Hollywood Reporter about the series, produced for the streamer by Paramount Television Studios and Anonymous Content’s AC Studios.
