Life Coach: Mills’ Debut a Showcase for Own Multi-talents
Toronto based filmmaker Pat Mills makes his directorial debut with Guidance, a dark hearted comedy that gets a lot of traction from exaggerated, inappropriate behavior draping its endearing core. Aping the hook of Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star (2003), Mills manages to surpass David Spade’s limitations with a basic premise that has a myriad of possibilities, and, as far as comedies hinged on adults behaving badly goes, Mills’ film works on a variety of entertaining levels. Director, screenwriter, and star, his strongest asset happens to be himself in an entertaining performance that is as unabashedly off-putting as it is strangely empathetic. His onscreen persona manages to help us overlook some of the film’s minor sleights to the development of supporting characters necessary for the attempted third act pathos. Nevertheless, this is an impressionable first feature, one deserving of attention as...

Joey Barton has been a free agent since his contract ended at Queens Park Rangers in June and has been recently linked with a number of Premier League sides.
The 32-year-old was expected to sign for West Ham earlier this week but talks broke down without any deal being finalised.
Hammers’ chairman David Gold added further confirmation by writing on Twitter: “Despite the speculation, Joey Barton will not be joining West Ham United.”
The midfielder then took to Twitter himself and posted a video message that thanked the West Ham fans for their support and kind messages before wishing the club the best of luck in the future.
Barton continued to answer a number of fans’ questions during a Q&A session on the social media platform and said he would be open to any move as he “just loves playing football.”

Guidance
Written & Directed by Pat Mills
Canada, 2014
Not only is Guidance hilariously uncouth, it might be one of the best movies ever made about borderline personality disorder. This is not a warm, snuggly comedy that you can watch with grandma and grandpa. No, this movie is the reprobate uncle that nobody wants to bail out of jail. Yet, despite its unabashed rudeness, Pat Mills’ consistently-funny debut doesn’t have a cynical bone its body. Our memorable hero just wants to help people, no matter how much it hurts them.
Imagine Stuart Smalley quitting his mood stabilizers cold turkey and you get some idea what to expect from David Gold (Mills). Twenty-five years ago, David was the star of a hit children’s show called “Wacky Street.” Today, he’s an unemployed narcissist who drinks like a fish, curses like a sailor, and refuses to acknowledge his homosexuality. On May 24th 2015 West Ham United announced that they would not be renewing the contract of their manager, Sam Allardyce.
Allardyce himself has stated he felt it was probably the right time for him to go – for both him and the club.
He had four fairly successful seasons at Upton Park, guiding them to promotion from the Championship in his first season and securing strong mid-table finishes in the next three, finishing 10th, 13th and 12th respectively. However, his time at the club has been plagued by criticism over his style of football, with suggestions that the owners, David Gold and David Sullivan, wanted the team to play in a more entertaining, attacking style.
West Ham are also due to move into the Olympic Stadium in August 2016, and it is thought that the owners want a new manager to oversee the club as they move to...

Despite the fact that David Gold told everyone not to go to bed, he’s left a lot of West Ham fans disappointed by failing to do any of the promised business the club were looking to complete before the deadline.
Late deals for Emmanuel Adebayor and Genk defender Kara Mbodji have both failed to materialise, and the chance of sending Matt Jarvis out on loan to Qpr even fell apart when it turned out the swap deal to return Mauro Zarate on loan in exchange would have broken Premier League rules concerning loans.
Jake Sullivan – West Ham’s self-appointed mouth piece on transfer deadline day – has confirmed that everything has fallen to pieces in the last two hours even though the club were working hard to bring some new players in:

Despite the fact that the deal for Emmanuel Adebayor to West Ham supposedly collapsed earlier in the eveningt thanks to Daniel Levy’s reluctance to pay his wages at a rival club (a positive endorsement of West Ham’s profile this season), it now looks like the deal could be back on.
With Carlton Cole moving on, Sam Allardyce was in the market to sign another striker, even with Mauro Zarate returning from a short-term loan deal at Qpr, and it seems that he didn’t want to look beyond Adebayor.
The striker hasn’t exactly been at the top of his game recently with his first team opportunities at Spurs limited, but he could be exactly the kind of experienced impact player who could supplement what the Hammers already have well. Whether he will be happy to be considered in that manner remains to be seen,...

You can always tell when someone really wants to sell a story by the language they use to market it: Exclusive, Sensational, Amazing! the headlines scream. You Won’T Believe What Happened Next!!! As if everyone is constantly walking around spitting coffee out comically at the sight of a dog rolling over and pulling a daft face or something: but that’s sort of how readers work now, and you have to be competitive.
That’s probably why The Chronicle have just published a story purporting – from its headline at least – to suggest that Andy Carroll has flat out refused to play under Alan Pardew at Newcastle. Not just that he doesn’t want to return becuase he’s happy in London, but that the specific issue he has is with the current boss. “Andy Carroll not interested in playing for Alan Pardew at Newcastle United” the title shouted,...

Despite claims over the weekend by the Chronicle that Andy Carroll was set to be offered to Newcastle (again), it doesn’t look like the club will be doing business any time soon, given how much Carroll is likely to cost.
There had been some speculation that West Ham want to cut their losses on the player, who has had a disappointing time in London after the Hammers “rescued” him from his Liverpool disaster, and that a good deal was there to be done for any interested parties. Inevitably, Newcastle were suggested as the most interested of all potentially interested parties – probably nothing more than a case of two plus two equals column inches – as Mark Douglas claimed that the Magpies would be interested in discussing a move.
But as with every deal Newcastle do, affordability is a major obstacle and Carroll would only ever have...

“Everybody knows that teenagers are going to drink and smoke drugs. If you do it with them, everybody has fun!”
Today I raise a shot glass of vodka to the Tiff Official Selection "Guidance", which is also the directorial debut of Pat Mills. It's the story of David Gold , an alcoholic, sexually repressed 36 year old guy who still hangs on to his long ago success as a child actor. After being axed from his job as a voice over on self-help soundtracks made for women who need to up their confidence, David fakes his resume to land a job as a high school guidance counsellor. A natural transition, of course.
"Guidance" is a must-see and a moving, laugh out loud romp from start to finish. The brilliant comedic timing hits within the first moments as the sound engineer at David’s voice over job says, “Apparently our female customers would like the voice of a heterosexual man feeding them their affirmations.” David replies with the perfect beat, “No, I’m not gay. I just have a gentle voice.”
David poses as “Roland Brown”, a high school guidance counselor he finds on Youtube, to play the part of Grusin High’s new guidance counselor. His emotional and hilarious journey is refreshing, as he’s honest with his students about his drinking problem (while offering them shots like a good bartender would) and coaches his teenage girls how to flirt and be sluts with the guys. It’s the kind of character that makes you wish your high school counselor was upfront about being an alcoholic, because you know he really was.
Without a doubt, "Guidance" will get the nods it deserves at Tiff, and will continue to bedazzle viewers with it’s vodka guzzling, self-help affirming hilarity at other significant festivals down the road. My suggested affirmation for the creators of Guidance: I am worthy of awards, international festivals and distribution, because I am funny, touching, and gosh darn it, festival goers like me.
Executive Producer/Producer Alyson Richards and Producer Mike MacMillan share what went into making this unique and outrageously entertaining film:
Alyson Richards talks about how Guidance was unexpectedly sold. A good example of why it’s necessary to have more than one project to pitch:
I originally went in to pitch a different project to Telefilm Canada, but the person I met with felt that project wasn't yet ready. Just before I was leaving he asked "What else do you have"? I mentioned Guidance and his eyes lit up. He was totally into it.
What makes "Guidance" unique compared to other projects you’ve worked on?
Mike MacMillan: I really love working on black comedy, more than anything because I find it really great when people are laughing on set. For this, I was really drawn to this script, because it was hilarious - I actually laughed out lout when I read it. The team was amazing as well - we really had so much fun and became a film family. That’s hard to find, and it’s really something to hold on to for other projects.
Has Pat Mills directed other films?
Alyson: He has directed shorts, but this is actually his first feature, and I think he did an amazing job transitioning to long form. Funnily enough, he wasn't originally going to play the lead, but we forced him to audition - now I can't picture anybody else playing the role. He hasn't acted professionally since he was a kid, but you'd never guess it from his performance.
What has been the overall response to Guidance so far?
Mike: Everyone has laughed really hard at our test screenings, and has really enjoyed it. It’s really fun, which I think is great.
What's next?
Alyson: Up next is another comedy called "Don't Talk To Irene" that is written and will be directed by Pat. The script is hilarious, and recently won best comedy script at the Austin Film Festival. We are in the middle of putting together the financing, and plan on shooting next summer.

Sam Allardyce is obviously paying attention to West Ham owner David Gold’s assertion that his side had to play better football this season, as the Hammers have raced into a two goal lead against Crystal Palace as Selhurst Park.
The first was scored by new signing Mauro Zarate just moments after he missed a glorious chance, but he more than made amends with an impressive twenty yard volley.
https://vine.co/v/MLthOetUgPZ
In truth, Palace should have dealt with the ball better, but full credit to Zarate for the goal.
The second goal came just minutes later as sometimes England man Stewart Downing cut inside from the touchline, ran at Palace’s retreating defence and fired a tidy shot into the far corner from just inside the box.

West Ham have never strangers to the bizarre. Sports media outlets came to a virtual standstill on transfer deadline day eight years ago, when following the 2006 World Cup, Javier Mascherano and Carlos Tevez - two of the most sought after youngsters in world football, and linked with a host of top clubs – defied everyone to become Hammers. Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal had been sniffing around the duo for the best part of 18 months, so there were jaws on the floor when press photos emerged of the immensely talented pair holding up Hammers jerseys, sandwiching a beaming Alan Pardew, who could hardly believe his luck. (That he decided neither were good enough within a matter of ludicrous months is neither here nor there).

The latest news that Kostas Mitroglu has signed for Fulham is a massive hammer blow to West Ham, who had been hoping to secure the £12 million Greek striker in order to score their way out of the relegation zone.
Manager Sam Allardyce and owner David Gold will now be turning their attention elsewhere, seeing who else they can snatch with the transfer kitty intended for the former Olympiakos striker.
Big Sam should have made strikers his main priority this window, given this side’s very precise needs at the minute. His side currently sit 18th in the premier league, 2 points away from safety and lack of goals has been a big issue so far this season, as the side have only seen the back of the net on 22 occasions.

Beleaguered West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is now an unbackable 1/5 to be the next Premier League manager sacked, according to Paddy Power.

The East London outfit are also without a league win since November. They lie in nineteenth place in the English Premier League, a mere point ahead of Sunderland, who had a torrid start to 2013/14.

The letter went on to state:

Relegation-threatened West Ham United want to make two January signings now the transfer window is open to turn their season around. Hammers boss Sam Allardyce is targeting Everton defender Johnny Heitinga and Southampton striker Rickie Lambert to solve problems at either end of the pitch.
West Ham begin the New Year second bottom of the Premier League and have a defensive crisis to contend with. Centre backs James Collins and James Tomkins have joined Winston Reid on the treatment table after picking up muscle problems over the festive period. Andy Carroll has passed his medical with West Ham United ahead of his £15 million move to Upton Park.
The 24-year old cost Liverpool £35 million in 2011 when the Reds signed the striker from Newcastle United, but spent all of last season on loan with the Hammers.
The transfer fee was agreed last month but the move had stalled up until now with the England international unsure over the transfer before a World Cup year.
But now the move is on the verge of completion despite concerns over his fitness.
Due to the size of the fee and also taking into account the player’s former injury problems, the medical was expected to be a thorough one, but Hammer’s chairman David Gold Tweeted that the player had passed “with flying colours”.
He posted on the micro-social networking site:

West Ham hope to complete the permanent signing of striker Andy Carroll from Liverpool by early next week, according to the London Evening Standard.
The 24-year old England international joined the Hammers on loan last August following his unsuccessful £35 million move from Newcastle to Merseyside – a British transfer record.
He only scored 6 times for the Reds and eventually wound up at Upton Park, where he has since enjoyed a steady reversal in fortunes.
Despite missing much of the campaign through injury, he was still able to net 7 goals in his 23 appearances last season and that was enough to convince manager Sam Allardyce to make the move permanent.
West Ham co-chairman David Gold said this week that the chances of Carroll staying in London had increased from, “50-50 to 75-25 per cent” and there are reports the club are now prepared to offer him a four-year deal worth £78,000-per-week to rescue him from his Liverpool hell.

The televised Michael Bublé-hosted portion of the 2013 Juno Awards in Regina may be The Big Show, but Saturday's non-televised gala dinner is where many of the big-deal awards are actually handed out — including categories-to-watch such as Pop Album of the Year, R&B/Soul Recording, Rap Recording, Alternative Recording and Breakout Artist of the Year.
Or, you know, Artist of the Year, which also shockingly wasn't televised. Elder statesman Leonard Cohen justly took that prize for his album "Old Ideas." Carly Rae Jepsen's victory over the Biebs in the Pop Album of the Year category was also not televised.
Toronto producer The Weeknd, a.k.a. Abel Tesfaye, was one of the night's big winner, snagging both R&B/Soul Recording of the year as well as Breakthrough Artist of the Year on the strength of "Trilogy," a compilation of his three independent mixtapes. The win doubtless comes...
