Fien Troch’s “Holly,” which world premieres in competition at the Venice Film Festival, has debuted its trailer. MK2 is handling world sales. Troch’s previous film, “Home,” won the Horizons best director award at Venice.
“Holly” follows 15-year-old Holly, who calls her school to say she is staying home for the day. Soon after, a fire breaks out at the school, killing several students. With everyone touched by the tragedy, the community comes together, trying to heal.
Anna, a teacher, intrigued by Holly and her strange premonition, invites her to join the volunteering group she runs. Holly’s presence seems to bring peace of mind, warmth and hope to those she encounters. But soon, people begin to seek out Holly and her cathartic energy, demanding more and more from the girl.
Troch admits that there is something of herself in Holly. “Yes, like her, I am very receptive to other people’s emotions,...

Ruben Östlund’s latest satire, Triangle of Sadness, dominated the European Film Awards with four wins, including Best Film, the evening’s top prize.
Östlund also picked up the Best Screenplay and Best Director Awards for his work on the film, and Zlatko Burić nabbed Best Actor for his leading role.
The film, which picked up this year’s Palme d’Or, follows Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), a celebrity model couple who are invited on a luxury cruise for the uber-rich, helmed by an unhinged boat captain (Woody Harrelson). What first appeared Instagrammable ends catastrophically, leaving the survivors stranded on a desert island and fighting to stay alive.
In other top prizes, Vicky Krieps won the Best Actress award for the well-received period drama Corsage, and the Javier Bardem starrer, The Good Boss, won Best Comedy.

Now available in select theaters, virtual cinemas, vod, and digital services is Tailgate, a tense road trip film that Emily highly recommended after recently seeing it as part of the North Bend Film Festival. Here's a brand new clip we've been given exclusively for Daily Dead readers:
"Hans, his wife and two young children, hit the highway on a trip to visit family. After getting stuck behind a slow-moving van, he recklessly starts to antagonize the eerily stoic driver, blaring the horn and riding his bumper. Little does he realize that he’s just crossed the wrong motorist – a deranged madman who sets out to teach Hans a lesson he’ll not soon forget. Lured into an alarming game of vehicular cat and mouse, a simple family road trip turns into a deadly obstacle course in this nerve-wracking, pulse-pounding thriller, an Official Selection at the Sitges Film Festival and FrightFest.

Cannes — August Diehl, star of Terrence Malick’s Cannes competition player “Hidden Life,” acquired by Fox Searchlight during the festival, will head the cast of Tom Schreiber’s upcoming “Beautiful Souls” (“Schöne Seelen”).
Lead produced by Ingmar Trost at Sutor Kolonko in Germany, and structured as a domestic co-production with Maze Pictures, “Beautiful Souls” has just been set up as an international co-production with Spain’s Fasten Films and Topkapi Films in the Netherlands.
At an initial financing stage – though the prospect of an international sales agent boarding early on look good – “Beautiful Souls” is scheduled to go into production in late summer 2020.
Described as a goofy drama set in the pop trash of the 1990s,“Beautiful Souls” portrays the impact of macro historical change on a motley German community of inveterate individualists seeking happiness down on Spain’s Costa Brava coast.
It turns on Freddy, a perpetual juvenile chancer...

Pim Hermeling’s September Films, one of Benelux’s leading art house distributors, is diversifying into international co-production and sales.
The Amsterdam-based company is setting up its own international sales agent, Nine Film, of which Nelleke Driessen, former MD at Fortissimo, is now managing director. September has also bought a 50% stake in production outfit KeyFilm, run by Hanneke Niens and Hans De Wolf, through which Hermeling would like to co-produce international features. Amsterdam-based Topkapi Films is to launch one of the most ambitious TV dramas in recent Dutch history, Flying Dutchmen, directed by Joram Lürsen (Public Works, In Orange). Shooting will start at the end of the year.
In an exclusive interview with Screen International, company founder Frans van Gestel has revealed details of the project, which recently received support from the Netherlands Production Incentive. The series consists of eight episodes, each with a budget of €800,000 Euros.
It tells the story of Anthony Fokker, the Dutch aviation pioneer and aircraft manufacturer, and of his very volatile partnership with fellow aviation expert, Albert Plesman.

Not all projects should be made or released just because they go through film labs, says Bero Beyer.
The new artistic director of International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr), Bero Beyer, has questioned the role of talent schemes across the industry, saying there is a need to curate “gems” among a glut of “mediocre” features.
Speaking on the second day of CineMart, Iffr’s long-established co-production market, Beyer said: “It seems as if the R&D department of the film industry has moved to funds and festivals, in particular to specialised talent development programs that have grown into alternate financing models for feature films.”
Beyer, previously an independent producer on films such as Paradise Now and Atlantic., said having the weight of a major festival behind a project provided an advantage to features from young filmmakers and was not typical of the indie film process.
“Several schemes have been initiated to create a space for artistic freedom,” he said...

Kebab Royal
Directors: Peter Brosens & Jessica Woodsworth
Writers: Peter Brosens & Jessica Woodsworth
Another Belgian directing duo we’re committed to championing is Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodsworth (who we also included prematurely on our 2015 list). Starting out as documentarians, they segued into narrative film with 2006’s Khadak, eventually spinning a loosely related trilogy with 2009’s Altiplano and 2012’s The Fifth Season (2012). While it’s possible to obtain copies of the first two, for some confounding reason, their last feature never received distribution in the Us even though it’s a fascinating, transfixing film. They filmed their latest, Kebab Royal, past March, which is now in post-production. Their films are often characterized by offbeat, surreal flourishes, and their latest concerns Nicolas II, the onerous Belgian King. Stuck on an economic mission in Istanbul, he learns of Flanders’ declaration for dependence while he’s away, and a simultaneous solar storm knocks out communication and airplanes.

On the heels of the 39th edition of the Toronto Int. Film Festival (Sept 4-14), Ifp’s Independent Film Week is where a plethora of fiction, non-fiction and new this year, web-based series from the likes of Desiree Akhavan and Calvin Reeder find future coin. Sectioned off as projects at the very beginning of financing to those that are nearing completion, there happens to be tons of Sundance alumni in the names below. Among those that caught our attention we have Medicine for Melancholy‘s Barry Jenkins’ sophomore feature, produced by Bad Milo!‘s Adele Romanski, Moonlight is about “two Miami boys navigate the temptations of the drug trade and their burgeoning sexuality in this triptych drama about black queer youth”. Kidnap thriller The Disappearance Of Alice Creed remade for Dutch audiences.
Producer Frans van Gestel is at the Rotterdam International Film Festival (Iffr) drumming up international interest in Joram Lürsen’s new thriller Reckless (Bloedlink), a Dutch remake of British kidnap thriller The Disappearance Of Alice Creed.
The film, produced by Oscar-nominated Dutch outfit Topkapi Films, is directly based on J Blakeson’s 2009 thriller, which starred Gemma Arterton, Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston
Speaking to ScreenDaily in Rotterdam, van Gestel said that the new film, now in post-production, is aimed primarily at a Dutch audience.
“Obviously, if you make a remake of a British film, it is not meant to travel around the world. It is meant to work really strongly in the domestic market.”
Van Gestel together with screenwriter Frank Ketelaar was looking for genre stories that could be made for a modest budget of around €1m.
