The 2013 Tony Award nominations were announced this morning by actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson and five-time nominated Broadway regular Sutton Foster.
The musical "Kinky Boots" nabbed the most nominations with a total of 13 Tony nods, making the fetish footwear-themed production this year's leading favorite. Its chief rival -- the kid-friendly "Matilda" -- followed close behind with a respectable 12. In the play category, the "Golden Boy" revival secured the highest number of mentions with a total of eight nominations, while Nora Ephron's "Lucky Guy" starring Tom Hanks earned six.
Big names in the acting nominations department included Hanks, Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf and Cicely Tyson. Notably missing were Bette Midler, Jessica Chastain, Scarlett Johansson and Alec Baldwin, just a handful of celebrities who graced the Broadway stage this season but were snubbed when it came to the Tony announcements.

For Jenny Gersten, the best part of her job is saying "Yes.""It's all about creating opportunity," says Gersten, and as the artistic director of the Williamstown Theatre Festival, Gersten revels in the chance to let artists of all levels experiment and explore their potential while forming creative partnerships. "Relationships that people make in training programs this summer will become something in 10 years. I've seen it happen. That means something to me."Gersten might be passionate about opening doors for artists, but returning to the festival as the artistic director was a new frontier for the veteran producer. The daughter of Bernard Gersten, the longtime executive producer of Lincoln Center Theater who recently announced his retirement for June 2013, Jenny began her tenure at Williamstown in 1996 as an associate producer alongside then-artistic director Michael Ritchie. She spent nine years there, during which time six shows transferred to Broadway and the...

One has to hand it to the Tony nominators: They didn't follow conventional wisdom nor did they particularly pay heed to commercial considerations.
Indeed, some of the biggest noms went to shows that are either long gone ("Ragtime," "Finian's Rainbow," "In the Next Room, or the Vibrator Play," "Time Stands Still") or lagging at the boxoffice ("Fela!" "Memphis," "Next Fall," "Million Dollar Quartet").
The biggest surprises Tuesday were the omissions.
"The Addams Family," the most successful new musical of the season, was thoroughly dissed, failing to get noms for best musical, for its stars Nathan Lane or Bebe Neuwirth, or even for its production design. And though it did get one for original score, that's not exactly a coup in a season in which only one other musical, "Memphis," even had one. The category had to be embarrassingly filled out with the forgettable music from "Enron" and Branford Marsalis' incidental music for "Fences.

Australian playwright Andrew Bovell recognizes that there may be a competitive factor lurking beneath Australia's theatre industry's struggle to transcend boundaries on the international stage. In a talk with Variety, he explains the struggles and rewards of being part of that "other" culturally rich English-speaking region and what it means to be recognized by his counterparts in New York and the U.K.
In an excerpt from the Variety report, Buvell explains "We write in the same language, so we're competing...I would imagine the U.K. has the richest writing culture in the English-speaking world. So why do an Australian play when there are so many writers here? But when theaters recognize something of value -- and this is the same in New York -- they immediately find a place for it."
