Ireland’s Ian Fitzgibbon, Romania’s Adrian Sitaru, Iceland’s Runar Runarsson (pictured), Italy’s Daniele Vicari and America’s John Huddles are among the directors who will be presenting their new projects at the Les Arcs Co-production village this year.

This year’s co-pro selection mixes upcoming productions from established independent filmmakers with a slew of projects from feted shorts directors who are embarking on their first features.

The Indonesian director known as (just) Edwin has started on a Dutch-Indonesian co-production called Exotic Pictures. Working from a script by himself and Marco van Geffen, Edwin will look at, and I quote from the press notes by production company Lemming Film: "...the long and suppressed history between the Dutch and the Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal." The renowned filmmaker, who won multiple awards with his previous features Blind Pig Who Wants To Fly and Postcards From The Zoo, is currently studying at the Dutch Film Academy, where his subject is "porn and history". Sounds like he's the right man for this job! The story of Exotic Pictures takes place on the Indonesian island of Bali during the forties and fifties, and will...

Exotic Pictures to explore history between the Dutch and Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal.
Dutch production company Lemming Film, which co-produced Amat Escalante’s Cannes entry Heli, is working alongside Indonesian filmmaker Edwin and his production company Babibutafilm on new film Exotic Pictures (working title)
According to the producers, the feature will “explore the long and suppressed history between the Dutch and the Indonesians through war, sex, desire and betrayal”.
Lorna Tee, who co-produced Edwin’s most recent feature Postcards from the Zoo, is also a producer of the project. With “Postcards” in 2012, Edwin became the first Indonesian filmmaker in competition at the Berlinale.
Exotic Pictures is written by Edwin and writer/director Marco van Geffen and is set between 1940 until late ‘50s. The story takes place in Bali and will be shot entirely on location in Indonesia and the Netherlands.

#92. Marco Van Geffen’s In Your Name
Gist: Following his 2011 film Among Us, the second part of Van Geffen’s Vinex Trilogy, (revolving, facetiously, around the notion of the happy family), the second installment will focus on a Dutch couple attempting to build a new life together. However, their progress is derailed when their newborn child dies from a rare disease, leading the otherwise “normal” couple down a road of despair that apparently leads to dire circumstances. Barry Atsma and Lotte Verbeek (see above) star.
Prediction: In Your Name won the coveted Arte prize for Best Project at the Cannes Atelier co-production meeting, and with the first film winning prizes after a 2011 premier in Locarno, we’re betting that Van Geffen’s latest will make a bow in Un Certain Regard. Shooting began in December, and the pic is set to show in native Netherlands in the fall — so this...

Fifteen feature film projects from 14 countries have been selected for the 8th Cinéfondation Atelier at the 65th Cannes International Film Festival (from May 16 to 27).
Among the projects will be In Your Name by Dutch director Marco van Geffen, whose first feature film Among Us was presented in competition at the last Locarno Film Festival.
Two first feature projects by female directors will also be on show with Touch Me Not by Romanian director Adina Pintilie (whose medium-length film Don't Get Me Wrong was selected by many festivals) and Des Etoiles (Stars) by Franco-Senegalese director Dyana Gaye (nominated for a César award in 2011 for best short with Saint Louis Blues), a project led by production company Andolfi and that has been promised an advance based upon box office receipts from the French National Center for Cinema and themoving image (Cnc).
Another project for a first European feature film will be presented at the Atelier with Franco-Portugese production Tristes Monroes (Sad Monroes) by the duo Gabriel Abrantes and Daniel Schmidt, who were noticed at the last Mostra in Venice in the Horizons selection with the medium-length film Palaces of Pity (France-Portugal).
There will also be Cannibal by the Spaniard Manuel Martín Cuenca that will be the director's seventh feature film after over 12 years, of alernatively making documentaries and fiction films.
The other projects selected for the 2012 Atelier are:
Odysseys by Malek Bensmaïl (Algeria) Run by Philippe Lacôte (Ivory Coast) Blessed Benefits by Mahmoud Al Massad (Jordan) 3,000 Nights by Mai Masri ( Palestine) The Untold Tale by Shivajee Chandrabhushan (India) The Dog Show by Ralston Jover (Philippines) To Kill A Manby Alejandro Almendras (Chile) The Last Land by Pablo Lamar (Paraguay) Du, Zooey and Ma by Robin Weng and Underground Fragrance by Pengfei Song.(China)
Created in 2005 to help emerging and confirmed filmmakers to complete financing for their film (115 directors have benefitted so far, 72 films have been made, and 20 are still in pre-production), the Atelier will allow those selected in 2012 to be present on the Croisette from May 18 to 25 with their producers for individual meetings with the professionals interested in their projects. The Book of Projects and application forms will be available at the beginning of April on the Cinéfondation's website.

In the seven previous editions (with 2007 being the best crop of films with noteworthy titles such as Bertrand Bonello's De La Guerre, Michelangelo Frammartino's Le Quattro Volte, Semih Kaplanoglu's Milk, Ciro Guerra's The Wind Journey, João Pedro Rodrigues' To Die Like A Man and So Yong Kim's Treeless Mountain), L’Atelier has been a pivotal stop for new auteurs in world cinema finding some coin. Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? Eye Of The Storm Trailer I like this kind of story, I do. It's familiar territory, to be sure, but if there's someone who I...

Tiff's Discovery section is loaded with 25 features including World Premiere items in Dain Said's Bunohan, Ngoc Dang Vu's Lost in Paradise, Sebastián Brahm's Roman's Circuit, Emmanuelle Millet's Twiggy and Avalon from Swedish helmer Axel Petersén. Among the noteworthy mentions that are headed to Venice, they've got a must-see pair in Tomáš Lunák's Alois Nebel (see image above), Susan Youssef's Habibi, while I'll be keeping an eye out for Locarno preemed Ruslan Pak's Hanaan. From Cannes Directors' Fortnight section they've nabbed Karl Markovics' Breathing, Rúnar Rúnarsson's Volcano, Rebecca Daly's The Other Side of Sleep and they've got the Camera D'Or winner Las Acacias which played in the Critics' Week. An item that I thought was headed to Sundance but will instead show in Toronto is Ryan O'Nan's The Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best and speaking of Sundance... Focus Features will use Tiff to showcase Dee Rees's Pariah.
