Box to Box Films, the production company behind Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive To Survive, has secured a multi-million dollar investment.
Deadline understands that private equity investor Bruin Capital has invested in the company. It’s not clear what stake Bruin has taken, but it’s believed to be a minority investment.
Box to Box, which is also behind series such as Netflix tennis series Break Point, golf series Full Swing and a new Apple TV+ show about Major League Soccer, is the latest documentary company, with an interest in sports, to score investment.
Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions sold a stake to Peter Chernin’s The North Road Company and Boardwalk Pictures, which is behind Netflix’s NBA series The Long Game and Cheer, sold a stake to investment firm Shamrock Capital.
Box to Box was founded by Amy and Senna producer James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin, who produced HBO’s Maradona.

Box to Box, the production company behind Netflix’s Formula 1: Drive To Survive, has cornered the sports docuseries market with its breakout docuseries and similar projects in the world of golf, tennis, cycling and rugby.
The company, founded by Amy and Senna producer James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin, who produced HBO’s Maradona, has also made a number of music documentaries including Apple’s 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything.
But it has also been dabbling in new areas including corporate true-crime series with Apple’s Wanted: The Escape of Carlos Ghosn and is looking at other weird and wonderful stories for its documentary slate as well as a new push into scripted and a potential investment drive.
“We looked at sport as an area, particularly in the premium space, that felt underserved,” Martin told Deadline. “You had ESPN, which did 30 for 30 and HBO doing Hard Knocks once a year.

Netflix’s Break Point is a superb documentary series created by Paul Martin and James Gay-Rees, which takes us into the world of professional tennis through its most promising aspirants.
The second part of this documentary series arrives in June, applying formulas seen in other sports documentaries like “Drive to Survive” and successfully bringing it to the world of tennis.
The first part was a huge success, and we expect no less from this second installment, which features a few privileged tennis players such as Nick Kyrgios, Thanasi Kokkinakis, and Matteo Berrettini, putting the world of tennis in the palm of our hands.
This documentary aims to take us beyond a television broadcast and make us truly part of the frenetic world of professional sports through aspirants who aim to dethrone the three great legends who have reigned in the last decade.

Formula 1: Drive to Survive is one of my favorite oddball word-of-mouth Netflix success stories — an unscripted show that got no particular critical attention when it premiered in 2019, only to reliably pop up in casual conversations and unexpected contexts, almost always with a preamble resembling, “I wasn’t interested in Formula 1 racing before, but…”
That series, which has now aired four seasons, found traction beyond racing aficionados with its high-octane photography and intimate access to drivers who, in the course of any given race, would normally be masked enigmas driving serpentine courses in exotic locales. Making a show about a global phenomenon, with the outcome decided long before a TV season ever makes it to audiences, seems like it could be a hindrance. Mining drama from something already definitively decided months ago is a challenge that “Formula 1: Drive to Survive” has faced since it debuted its inaugural season in 2019.
Over that time, though, this Netflix documentary series has unlocked a nifty trick to better tell the stories of the drivers and teams that make up this worldwide auto racing circuit: It moves backwards. Series executive producer James Gay-Rees said that it’s been a helpful guiding force from the start.
“It’s really liberating. Big props have to go out to Nat Grouille, the executive at Netflix that we’ve worked with since day one on this. He really did open our minds to how we could build this show,” Gay-Rees said. “One of...

The beautiful game has not been embraced by the seventh art in quite the same way as its American equivalent. Yet Soccer, or Football as we have it here, has a simplicity which makes for a thrilling and uncomplicated conflict, and yet few filmmakers centre their stories around it. Baseball is well served with A League of Their Own, Field of Dreams, The Natural, and many more, capturing the passion and drama of the game. The American variant of football has too, with Friday Night Lights, The Waterboy and Any Given Sunday showing off the variety of stories that can be told around the game. But Football (‘Soccer’) trails behind in the cinematic stakes.
That’s not to say that there aren’t some cracking films that have used football to build their dramatic stories. There is an inbuilt connection to the game, an understanding by osmosis of the importance...

Fifty years ago at this time, the world was just beginning to absorb the impact of Marvin Gaye’s seminal concept album What’s Going On. The LP, released on May 21, 1971, told a story in music from the point of view of a Vietnam veteran returning to an America beset by poverty, injustice and ecological crisis.
In a plaintive tenor voice, Gaye sang in the title track, “Father, father/We don’t need to escalate/You see, war is not the answer/For only love can conquer hate.”
As revealed in the Emmy-contending documentary series 1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything, Gaye’s was not the only remarkable statement made in popular music within that turbulent time frame.
“I mean every major artist—male, female, group, individual—seems almost to a complete level deliver their masterworks that year. So many big records made,” executive producer James Gay-Rees tells Deadline.

This story about “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The subtitle of the Apple TV+’s “1971” is the first clue as to the ambitions of the seven-part documentary series. While it is loosely based on David Hepworth’s 2016 book, “Never a Dull Moment: 1971 — The Year That Rock Exploded,” the series makes a key change and calls itself “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything.”
In other words, it’s not about how music changed at the beginning of the 1970s; it’s about how music changed the world.
“It was an incredible time for a range of artists, and the music subsequently motivated the world,” said Asif Kapadia, the Oscar-winning director whose other films include “Amy,” “Senna” and “Diego Maradona.” “The idea was to get into the music, but also the environment, the politics and how they all cross over.

When James Gay-Rees, along with fellow executive producer Asif Kapadia, started to put together a docuseries about the music of 1971, they had to answer the basic question of what made that year so pivotal. “We realized it was a very tumultuous and very pivotal year in the sense that the sixties had come to this kind of crashing end with Kent State, Altamont, Charles Manson and The Beatles spitting up in December 1970,” Gay-Rees explains to Gold Derby in our Meet the Experts: Television Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). From seeing how the sixties ended, it clearly set up everything that was to follow in the next decade. “So all that kind of optimism of the sixties was replaced by the golden age of paranoia, Nixon, you know, bugging the White House and Vietnam in full effect.”

Was 1971 the best single year for recorded popular music, ever? Or merely the year in which it reached peak cultural significance? Maybe, just maybe, the answer could be: both. You’ll certainly be hard-pressed to come up with a better argument for another annum after watching all eight episodes of “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything,” which just premiered on Apple TV Plus.
Let’s face it: Your well-considered alternate pick is going to have a hard time besting the year that generated Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” Carole King’s “Tapestry,” Joni Mitchell’s “Blue,” the Who’s “Who’s Next,” Elton John’s “Madman Across the Water,” T. From the filmmakers behind Senna & Amy comes a new series documenting the powerful and politically charged music of 1971, and the impact it had on society at the time. To mark its release – on Apple TV+ this Friday – we had the pleasure in speaking to the talented minds behind the project; producers Asif Kapadia and James Gay-Rees and director James Rogan.
We discuss the relevance of the project and how life then was comparable to now, and on the impact music had at the time. They comment on the archive footage, such as brilliant, candid interviews with John Lennon, while they also speak about how music compares nowadays, and if modern generations have been as lucky as those who lives through the birth of so many new styles back in the 60s and 70s.
We also ask Kapadia what has he lined up next, following the huge success of his biographical docs,...

Art of any kind is often a product of its era. And for music in 1971, that is most definitely true, as artists were responding to the political and social movements of the time, resulting in iconic songs and performances that defined a generation. It is such an interesting and important year in the history of music that it has spawned a new docuseries on Apple TV+, aptly titled “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything.”
This new series is inspired by the book “Never a Dull Moment: 1971 The Year That Rock Exploded” by David Hepworth and comes to Apple via Academy, BAFTA, and Grammy Award winners Asif Kapadia (“Amy“) and James Gay-Rees.

When debates are had about what year in history represented popular music’s peak, the argument is often made for 1971. Apple TV Plus clearly gives some credence to that belief. The platform has announced imminent plans to premiere “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything,” an eight-episode documentary series dedicated to using archival footage and vintage and fresh interviews to explore why rock ‘n’ roll and R&b reached maximum vitality during that politically fraught time.
The series, which bows May 21, comes from a filmmaking team that includes principals who worked together on such previous film documentaries as “Amy” (about the late Amy Winehouse), “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and “Senna.”

Four high-impact boxers — Sugar Ray Leonard, Roberto “Manos de Piedra” Durán, Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Thomas “The Hitman” Hearns — will re-enter the limelight in Showtime docuseries The Kings.
The first of the show’s four episodes will premiere on Sunday, June 6, at 8Pm Et/Pt on linear and streaming, the ViacomCBS premium network announced.
Nicknamed the Four Kings during their remarkable, overlapping careers, the quartet contested nine championship fights among them from 1980 to 1989. Their distinct styles and vivid personalities helped spark a renaissance in the sport of boxing, which had endured a downturn after Muhammad Ali’s storybook run concluded.
The backdrop of the series is the 1980s, a go-go decade marked by pronounced socioeconomic and political upheaval in the U.S. as President Ronald Reagan left his mark.
Hagler died last month at age 66.
“These four men defined an era in boxing,” said Stephen Espinoza, president of Showtime Sports,...
