With the Christmas holiday hitting later this week, Tuesday is looking to be a somewhat quiet day for horror and sci-fi home media releases. Scream Factory has put together a Collector’s Edition Blu-ray for The Vampire Lovers and Tempe Video is showing some love to a trio of overlooked micro-budget genre flicks from the 1990s: Kingdom of the Vampire, Zombie Cop, and Humanoids from Atlantis. Other releases for December 21st include Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness and Roh.
Humanoids from Atlantis
Faced with a prolonged bitter Ohio winter in March 1992 and a distributor release date just weeks away, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) had no choice but to toss out the majority of his “Humanoids From Atlantis” screenplay and have the cast and crew make it up as they went along. The result is a complete cinematic abomination that has to be seen to be believed, but strangely...

Double your Diabolik and double your pleasure! … this Australian import chases a domestic disc onto the market after only a few months, but of course comes with irresistible new extras to tempt collectors and completists. Mario Bava’s funny, dynamic action thriller was the first feature to really capture the graphic art ‘feeling’ of comic panels — we wish he’d directed a whole series of Diabolik adventures. The evaluation section notes the small differences between this disc and the U.S. release from last April.

Oh Joy, Oh Rapture! Mario Bava’s comic book thriller makes the jump to Blu-ray in fine shape, with knockout visuals and eye-popping color. John Philip Law, Marisa Mell, Terry-Thomas and the late Michel Piccoli are all irreplaceable in this one-of-a-kind show. Bava’s film translates action comic fantasy into cinematic terms, pictorial appeal and dynamism intact. The disc comes with a pair of excellent commentaries, featuring Nathaniel Thompson, Troy Howarth, Tim Lucas and John Philip Law himself.

It’s Hammer Time again, and I always feel like I’m playing gothic whack-a-mole; finish one and another pops up begging for my attention. This brings us to Lust for a Vampire (1971), the second film in the “Karnstein trilogy” of which I’ve now seen a total of one. I will see the rest, as is my sworn duty, and because I’ve heard this entertaining chapter to not be the best of the bunch.
That’s the word on the streets anyway, with top honours going to The Vampire Lovers (1970), the preceding effort based on the story Carmilla and enough of a hit to warrant a follow-up. (And a follow-up to this entitled Twins of Evil .) However the rest play out for this viewer, I can attest that despite some issues, Lust for a Vampire works as a decent Hammer and an effective take on vampiric eroticism.

Courageous disc boutique Scream Factory takes on one of Hammer’s biggest embarrassments, that almost everyone connected to it would like to disown. I bailed from my first viewing around 1990 … yet this time around found it somewhat better than I expected. The girlie-show nudity is treated as a special effect, and the story at least hangs together. And like every Hammer horror, there’s a sizable, vocal cheering section out there that sings its praises.

The 1971 Hammer horror cult classic "Twins of Evil" will receive a rare big screen showing on Tuesday May 30 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Brooklyn. Showtime is at 9:30. Here is the official description from the Alamo Drafthouse web site:
Hosted by TV writer/producer, recovering film critic Bruce Bennett. Admission only $10!
By 1971 the UK Hammer House of Horror had traded cleavage and blood trickle for R-rated female nudity and comparatively extravagant applications of “Kensington Gore”. Twins Of Evil literally doubles down on the nudity care of comely Maltese identical siblings Madeleine and Mary Collinson. And writer Tudor Gates’ grafting of vampire yarn with witch-hunt mentality jeremiad offers plenty of opportunities for bloodletting - particularly via a climactic beheading. But with all due respect to the Collinsons, the most memorable charms on display in Twins Of Evil are of a more backward-glancing variety. Taking a page from Michael Reeves’ Witchfinder General,...

It's not every day you see Richard E. Grant and Tom Bateman tussling in an underground bunker. Visiting the set of ITV’s superhero-retelling of Jekyll & Hyde in the outskirts of London this June, that’s exactly what we got.
The new show, a 1930s adaptation of the oft-retold Robert Louis Stevenson novel, focuses on Robert Jekyll, the grandson of Edward Hyde and inheritor of the family’s dark secret. It’s 19th Century literature with a modern superhero twist, and fully intends to take over Sunday-night family viewing.
The show, which premieres this Sunday at 6.30pm on ITV, filmed its first ten-episode series in London over the summer. With a gaggle of other journalists, Den of Geek visited the set and chatted with...

Special Mention: Gojira (Godzilla)
Written and directed by Ishirô Honda
Japan, 1954
Ishiro Honda’s grim, black-and-white post-Hiroshima nightmare stands the test of time. This allegory for the devastation wrought on Japan by the atomic bomb is quite simply a powerful statement about mankind’s insistence to continue to destroy everyone and everything the surrounds us. With just one shot (a single pan across the ruins of Tokyo), Honda manages to express the devastation that Godzilla represents. Since its debut, Godzilla has become a worldwide cultural icon, but very little is said about actor Takashi Shimura, who adds great depth as Dr. Yamane; his performance is stunning. Special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya originally wanted to use classic stop-motion animation to portray Godzilla, but time and budget limitations forced him to dress actors up in monster suits. Despite this minor setback, Tsuburaya’s scale sets of Tokyo are crafted with such great attention to detail,...

Hammer have had something of a renaissance on Blu-ray recently, with StudioCanal releasing a number of classic titles in new hi-def editions. And now, released as part of Network’s ‘The British Film’ collection, comes two of Hammer’s “sexier” films of the 70s: the infamous Twins of Evil, starring Playboy Playmates Mary and Madeleine Collinson; and Countess Dracula, which features a career-defining performance from Ingrid Pitt in the titular role.
Despite being made during Hammer early-70s fallow period, where the studio was running out of stories, out of budget and were being left behind by more “extreme” horror films and exploitation movies emanating from the Us (after all this was just after the release of Night of the Living Dead which ultimately changed the face of the genre forever), both Twins of Evil and Countess Dracula are beloved by fans of the studio, and with good reason.

The Vampire Lovers came at a time of change for Hammer films. Due to a marketplace more saturated with violence and sex, not to mention a horror stage increasingly shared by classics, like Rosemary’S Baby and Night Of The Living Dead, Hammer was struggling financially. To combat it, Hammer, along with American International, adapted J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s novella Carmilla (1872), into the Karnstein Trilogy, of which The Vampire Lovers is the first entry. The film took the boobs and blood formula to new heights, by infusing the film with some of the most tawdry lesbian scenes that had ever taken place on celluloid (which, while fairly tame under today’s standards, is no less erotic).
The film looks beautiful, and the booming Hammer score is there, replete with ear splitting screams (watch out with volume control). But you’re here for one thing: The Extras; and for the most part,...

Broadway musicals should have a wow factor.
The latest version of "Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical" at the Marquis Theatre, offers up a lot of spectacles, but it never coalesces into a great show.
As hard as Constantine Maroulis works in the title roles, it is not enough, and it's unclear what else he could do. Maroulis, "American Idol" finalist, Season 4, and a Tony nominee for "Rock of Ages" is completely sincere as Dr. Jekyll and threatening as Mr. Hyde. His voice is up to the taxing role.
Deborah Cox, (Broadway's "Aida" and an R & B pop star) as Lucy, the prostitute, is excellent.
Yet this production feels as if the sets, which are interesting with holograms and projections, are more important than anything. The story remains the same, a physician researches the good and evil in man, to help his father, who is insane.
Dr. Henry Jekyll cannot risk trying...

Shout! Factory is quickly becoming one of my favorite outlets for hard to find classic horror titles. Their Scream! Factory line collects these rare films and gives them the high-definition treatment and attention to detail they deserve. They continue their ongoing mission with Hammer's 1970 film "The Vampire Lovers."
The vampire Countess Carmilla Karnstein makes her way through the Austrian countryside creeping into the households of aristocrats and taking their daughters as victims. The families begin to catch on when a pattern of deaths in the area takes shape. Vampire hunter Baron Hartog is called upon to put an end to Carmilla's wicked ways and end the legacy of terror the Karnstein family is known for.
I would like to first comment that I'm not a fan of this sort of risqué entertainment. I steer clear of movies that delve into racier subject matter like this. As a horror film history...

It was always an unusually high-profile, mainstream project for its director, and things had gone rather quiet lately, so this comes as no real surprise. But The Guardian has final confirmation, if confirmation were really needed, that Abel Ferrara's version of Jekyll and Hyde is no longer happening.Ferrara directed the original Bad Lieutenant and its brilliant spiritual follow-ups The Funeral and The Addiction, as well as King of New York, with its terrifying central performance by Christopher Walken. Recent years have seen him dip seriously below the radar though, with the documentaries and features he's worked on barely securing releases. There were brief reports of him directing Game of Death for Wesley Snipes (who was also in King of New York), but it went ahead with Giorgio Serafini behind the camera. His modern-day Jekyll and Hyde was set to star Forest Whitaker and 50 Cent. Fiddy "could be an awesome Edward Hyde,...

"The Matrix" star Keanu Reeves has been tapped to star in Universal Pictures' modern adaptation of the classic "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" by Robert Louis Stevenson.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Justin Haythe ("Revolutionary Road") is adapting the screenplay, which is being kept under wraps.
Stevenson's classic novella tells the story of a Dr. Henry Jekyll, who, after drinking a potion he scientifically developed, turned into the cruel and evil Mr. Edward Hyde. The tale has been adapted into TV series, film and stage numerous times.
Nicolas Winding Refn ("Valhalla Rising") is still in talks to direct. Erwin Stoff, Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher are producing.

Keanu Reeves is to star in a modern retelling of the classic tale of Jekyll and Hyde.
The film, to be called Jekyll, is based on Robert Louis Stevenson's 1886 novella Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Revolutionary Road screenwriter Justin Haythe is penning the script for Universal while Nicolas Winding Refn is in talks to direct.
The story - about Dr Henry Jekyll who drinks a potion to become the evil Edward Hyde - has been translated to stage and screen dozens of times, most recently in a BBC miniseries in 2007.
Universal has also been developing a separate film version with Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy).
This adaptation would stick more closely to the original story but with del Toro working on The Hobbit for the next five years and having several other film projects on his plate, there will be a lot of space between the two versions.
