In this year's Humpday Joshua Leonard played the kind of character who reminds office drones of what they're missing, a 30-year-old vagabond living a life of travel and adventure and sex, rather than the monotonous but maybe more content life his old friend (played by Mark Duplass) has built for himself. But it seems Leonard will be slipping into the other role in The Lie, an indie he will direct based on T.C. Boyle's short story that ran in The New Yorker last year (you can read the full story online here). According to Variety Leonard adapted the story with Jess Weixler and Mark Webber, both of whom will star in the film as well. Jane Adams, Kelli Garner, P.J. Ransone, Gerry Bednob and Kirk Baltz will round out the cast as well. The original story is pretty slim on plot and characters, and presumably Leonard and company »

The last time Joshua Leonard stepped behind the camera, it caused quite a stir. That, of course, was on The Blair Witch Project when he played one of the three ill-fated student filmmakers who tangled with the eponymous menace.A decade on, and Leonard is ready to go behind the camera again, this time for real, on the indie drama, The Lie.The movie is based on a short story, written by T.C. Boyle, that appeared in The New Yorker, about a man who changes his life when he lies in order to get out of work. Sounds a little like The Invention of Lying – let’s hope that Leonard’s film hits the mark that Ricky Gervais’ appalling comedy missed so spectacularly.Leonard, who finally buried the Blair Witch curse this year by starring in the acclaimed indie comedy, Humpday (and the HBO show, Hung), will also star in the movie, »

Humpday's Joshua Leonard is stepping into the director's chair for the first time for the indie The Lie, in which he will also star.
According to Variety, the project is based on a T.C. Boyle short story that ran in the New Yorker last year, about a man who tells a lie to get out of work and inadvertently changes his life.
The script was adapted by Leonard, and his co-stars Jess Weixler (Teeth) and Mark Webber (Broken Flowers), with additional story by Jeff Feuerzeig.
The cast includes Jane Adams, with whom Leonard has co-starred in HBO series Hung, as well as Kelli Garner, P.J. Ransone, Gerry Bednob and Kirk Baltz.
The film begins production this month in Los Angeles.

I can tell that Red Velvet director Bruce Dickson has a future ahead of him. His debut is a rather impeccably designed slasher tribute, headlined by some gorgeous cinematography and dynamic color scheming. And Henry Thomas (Yeah, the E.T. Henry Thomas). Thomas makes a lot of his character, but can’t quite fuel the movie on his own. Unfortunately, his costar, Kelli Garner, isn’t a dramatic equal and so their many, many scenes of discussion together often fall flat. Those sequences take up about half of the film, the other consisting of some of the most innovative and fun-loving slasher ingenuity I’ve had the pleasure of viewing. It’s this sort of 50/50 deal that makes the movie very highly recommended for aspiring filmmakers. Technically and, for the most part, artistically, Red Velvet deserves its rather impressive success and critical reception; but half of the film is bogged down »

My good friend Sean Fernald has produced a tongue-in-cheek horror movie starring Henry Thomas (yes, the kid from E.T., but give the guy a break -- he's nearly 40 and has worked steadily since his heyday as a child actor) as a misnathropic oddball who ropes his pretty neighbor (Kelli Garner) -- the one whose fights with her boyfriend keep him up all night -- into a game of "let's imagine the perfect slasher movie." It's available exclusively on Amazon for the next three months, and I can say without fear or favor that Red Velvet is a nifty little picture made by genre lovers, for genre lovers.T »

Movie: ‘Taking Woodstock‘
Synopsis: From Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee (Brokeback Mountain, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), comes Taking Woodstock, a new comedy inspired by the true story of Elliot Tiber (Demetri Martin) and his family, who inadvertently played a pivotal role in making the famed Woodstock Music and Arts Festival into the happening that it was.
Stars: Demetri Martin, Emile Hirsch, Live Schreiber, Imelda Staunton
Written by: James Schmaus
Directed by: Ang Lee
Distributed by: Focus Features
Opening on: August 28, 2009
Elliot Teichberg (Demetri Martin) and Max Yasgur (Eugene Levy) in Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock
Expectations
What I’d Seen – A terrific campaign with 70’s-inspired graphics and logos. This movie was one of the few English language films included at this year’s Cannes film festival (I did not get to see it there) and the buzz was quite big back in May. »

Chicago – More about the vibe surrounding the three days of peace and love that would become the most influential festival in history than the actual music itself, Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock” is a frustrating drama with individual elements that work but a cinematic set list that is ultimately disjointed and unsatisfying.
Rating: 2.5/5.0 Late in “Taking Woodstock,” Elliot Teichberg’s (Demetri Martin) father (Henry Goodman) asks his son if he enjoyed the concert. Elliot says he made a few friends and that “It was great.” That’s the essential dialogue exchange in “Taking Woodstock,” a film about finding community, acceptance, and friendship more than one about bands, singers, or actual creativity.

The town of process is located somewhere in rural New Jersey, although it doesn't show up on any modern map. It's a nice place to visit unless you are a young, healthy, and beautiful woman. The town has a very lucrative underground and internet business specializing in selling organs for transplant, selling babies to loving couples who are barren, and young women into sex slavery. The town's patriarch, Jacob, is in control of everything. That is, until they kidnap the wrong girl, »

IFC Films gave Fango an update on when a quartet of its horror titles will debut as Blockbuster exclusives and then become available for retail via Mpi. Look for The Objective (at Blockbuster July 14) to retail on October 27; Pontypool (Blockbuster Oct. 13) to retail February 10, 2010; Dead Snow (Blockbuster Oct. 20) to retail January 26, 2010; and Dark Mirror (no Blockbuster date as of yet) to retail March 2010.
Meanwhile, the two Blu-ray set of the complete theatrical cut of the Weinstein Company’s Grindhouse (which we previously reported on here) has now been shifted to a street date of December 31 by Wal-Mart, which appears to be the only retailer offering it at the moment. That’s the slot the company has also set for a three-dvd Grindhouse edition—but since that’s a Thursday, and discs usually street on Tuesdays, could that just be a default date? (A few years back, the Weinsteins announced a »

Ang Lee is such a fascinating director that I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and believe that there is something magical about “Taking Woodstock”. The guy has never failed me before, and yes, I’m even one of the guys who thought his “Hulk” was fantastic, and I’ll continue to say that until the day I die. So, here are some new images from Lee’s “Taking Woodstock”, which from all appearances looks like a dramedy — parts comedy, parts growing up comedy, all Ang Lee. A man working at his parents’ motel in the Catskills inadvertently sets in motion the generation-defining concert in the summer of 1969. Starring Liev Schreiber, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Emile Hirsch, Dan Fogler, Paul Dano, Eugene Levy, Kelli Garner, Imelda Staunton, Demetri Martin, Kevin Sussman, and Katherine Waterston. Directed by Ang Lee (”Brokeback Mountain”). Get your hippie love on August 14. »
