- Opera star
- A great beauty as well as a great singer, she was the subject of a famous incident when she arived at a dinner party wearing a backless, strapless gown that didn't leave much to the imagination. When an older man asked what was holding the gown up, Garden replied, "Two things, sir. Your age and my discretion."
- Had the distinction of appearing at virtually every great opera house in the world, except the Metropolitan. When asked why, she always maintained that she was, quite simply, never asked.
- One of her most famous roles was written for, and is usually sung by, a man--that of Jean, the juggler, in Jules Massenet's opera "Le Jongleur de Notre Dame" (aka "The Juggler of Notre Dame").
