"No one can be trusted in this village." Lionsgate has released a trailer for a very cheesy Italian action film titled The Tracker, made by filmmaker Giorgio Serafini. The film stars Dolph Lundgren, completing his move away from anything with any real substance or worthwhile content, into the world of campy Italian B-movies. He's already been there for a while, but why not churn out a few more of these films for no one to watch. What is this one about? A mysterious stranger travels to a remote village where, 15 years earlier, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. Lundgren plays some kind of veteran marksman who gets revenge on the criminals who took his family. Also starring Cosimo Fusco, Anna Falchi, Marta Gastini, Bruno Bilotta, and Marco Mazzoli. This film looks as forgettable as they come, not even worth it for Lundgren. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Giorgio Serafini's The Tracker,...

*full disclosure: a DVD screener of this film was provided by IFC Films. Director/writer: Peter Strickland. Cast: Toby Jones, Cosimo Fusco, Antonio Mancino and Fatma Mohamed. Berberian Sound Studio is a United Kingdom shot film. This smallish film blends the English and Italian languages as one central character unhinges, strangely, before the viewer's eye. This unconventional film is a surreal and expressionistic title, whose meaning is left up to the viewer. Truly a slow burn, Berberian Sound Studio cannot easily be put into genre and the film is closest to a character study, with Gilderoy succumbing to studio pressure. This title will not be for most film fans as the Berberian Sound Studio putters into nothingness. The film begins and ends with the character Gilderoy (Toby Jones). Gilderoy has flown from England down to Italy, in order to compose sound on a film that is never shown to viewers.

If I actually reviewed Berberian Sound Studio last night immediately after my viewing, I would have been doing director Peter Strickland, myself, and most importantly you, the reader, and absolute disservice. Why? Because my immediate reaction would have gone something like “Um…did that…was he…where…huh?” But thanks to further deconstruction of Strickland’s crazy homage/inspired vision while I laid awake struggling with my own inner thoughts, I realized what this beautifully creepy behind-the-scenes mindf#ck actually represented, and it was like a switch flipped. Admittedly, I’m still not As in love with the film as some reviewers, mainly the ones who had it in their top 10 last year (yes, you lucky UK bastards got it first), but Strickland’s technical prowess accomplishes loads more than meets the eye.

Italian giallo films have made something of a quiet comeback recently. Restored blu-rays of Dario Argento and Mario Bava’s films are inviting renewed considerations of the genre outside the canonized Suspiria, and Hélène Cattet and Bruno Forzani’s Amer presented a dedicated contemporary revisitation of the genre. Now consider British writer-director’s Peter Strickland’s sophomore feature Berberian Sound Studio, a densely atmospheric and wonderfully bizarre journey into the increasingly fevered mind of a sound effects engineer of an Italian horror (but don’t call it horror!) film in which is the film itself is never actually seen, but only heard. It’s 1976. Gilderoy (the great Toby Jones) is a meek, soft-spoken English sound effects engineer who has just flown into Italy in order to produce sonic gore effects for a giallo-type film made by the eccentric self-fashioned visionary Santini (Antonio Mancio) and a curmudgeonly, dictatorial producer Francesco (Cosimo Fusco). Santini’s affairs with his voice...

The Italian giallo has provided horror with some of the genre’s most memorable scenes. Names like Fulci, Argento, and Bava are just a few that have provided their exceptional skill in crafting the look and feel of the giallo motif. Those paradigms have influenced director Peter Strickland, as he has composed a film evocative of giallo filmmaking, but also purposed with a dedication to the detailed execution of a structured, element driven storytelling.
The setting is Italy in the seventies. An awkward, introverted sound engineer named Gilderoy (Toby Jones) is commissioned to work on a horror film called the “The Equestrian Vortex”. The director, Santini (Antonio Mancino), is an intimidating man who berates his crew consistently. Gilderoy works with Francesco (Cosimo Fusco), another abusive type, on the sound design for the film. The difficult work environment overwhelms Gilderoy, but more so are the terrifying and disturbing images he is fashioning the sound for.

A timid, unsure man named Gilderoy (Toby Jones) has just flown from London to Italy. He shuffles through the corridors of a nearly abandoned building. He is greeted coldly by a detached but beautiful secretary, Elena (Tonia Sotiropoulou), who directs him to a sound studio, it seems the 'silenzio' light never stops flashing above it as the film progresses. He is greeted by his new employer, the sleazy producer Francesco (Cosimo Fusco), and after a few days begins to unravel due to work pressures and strange occurrences, which lead to even more puzzling developments and horrific scenarios that question the reality of the film's premise entirely. I approach discussing Berberian Sound Studio with total caution, as I am not entirely sure what I experienced. The...

A fond tribute to giallo, a hymn to analogue recording equipment, a vehicle for the irresistible Toby Jones – on paper at least, Berberian Sound Studio looks like it might be the best movie ever made. Peter Strickland's second feature is certainly a delight for the senses, indulging the audience in the intensity and theatricality of 1970s Italian horror, aural and visual details heightened for maximum effect. Unfortunately, the delicate plot threads spiral out of control in the third act, leaving the audience awash with all the delicious possibilities (mysteriously disappearing technicians, dead chaffinches, actresses taken ill, an unseen intruder lurking within the studio) that never come to pass. Nonetheless, this arthouse horror movie offers some noble, rather than the usual guilty, pleasures to genre aficionados.

Writer-director Peter Strickland's dark thriller Berberian Sound Studio has revealed a dark, moody trailer that you can check out in the player below. Starring Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Susanna Cappellaro, Cosimo Fusco, Eugenia Caruso, the film takes place in 1976 and follows a mild-mannered British sound engineer named Gilderoy (Jones), who arrives in Rome to work on the post-synchronized soundtrack to "The Equestrian Vortex," a tale of witchcraft and murder set inside an all-girl riding academy.
But as Gilderoy begins to work on this unexpectedly terrifying project, it's his own mind that holds the real horrors. As the line between film and reality blurs, is Gilderoy working on a film - or in one? Berberian Sound Studio is slated to hit theaters in a limited release on June 14, the same day that it becomes available on VOD and iTunes.

Roth will be on hand to accept the Inaugural Visionary Award and take part in a Q&A after the film.
“Since his debut on the film festival scene with Cabin Fever in 2002, Eli Roth has become a leading force in the horror genre. An extremely shy Englishman, Gilderoy (Toby Jones) has just arrived in Italy to essentially become a one-man sound team for The Equestrian Vortex, the latest film by Italian giallo maestro Santini (Antonio Mancino). Up until now, Gilderoy has only worked on English documentaries and children's programs; so Gilderoy approaches his surreal new position like a frightened mouse (an analogy that is visually hinted upon by the juxtaposition of Toby Jones' height with his taller Italian counterparts). A foreigner in many senses of the word, Gilderoy's naivete is showcased by his lack of understanding of the Italian language as well as his obliviousness to the cinematic language of the giallo genre. What Gilderoy does understand is sound recording, so as long as the perpetually angry Francesco (Cosimo Fusco) agrees to speak English to him, Gilderoy can timidly proceed with the task at hand. From here on out, Gilderoy devotes everything...

Berberian Sound Studio
Review by Andrew McArthur
Stars: Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Susanna Cappellaro, Cosimo Fusco, Layla Amir | Written and Directed by Peter Strickland
Director Peter Strickland (Katalin Varga) presents us with the truly unsettling look at the power of sound in his latest feature, the Toby Jones led, Berberian Sound Studio. Set in the 1970s, the film follows British sound technician, Gilderoy, as he works in Italy on a gruesome horror film. Soon Gilderoy’s work on this dark feature slowly begins to bleed into his everyday life.
Berberian Sound Studio is certainly not a horror film, instead more of a psychological thriller reminiscent of Hammer Films “Mini-Hitchcocks”. This completely absorbing and brooding drama manages to be unsettling, rather than scary. Strickland’s direction immediately emphasises a sense of foreboding, with the distinctive use of the sounds created in the studio capturing Gilderoy’s troubling mental state.

This is the Pure Movies review of Berberian Sound Studio, directed by Peter Strickland and starring Toby Jones, Tonia Sotiropoulou, Cosimo Fusco and Susanna Cappellaro. Written by David Hudson. It’s the early 1970s, and sheltered and unworldly sound engineer Gilderoy (Toby Jones) flees the safety of his mother’s house in Dorking, Surrey, to work on a gory horror film in Italy. He finds himself buried deep in a bunker-like recording studio, surrounded by screaming actresses, megalomaniac filmmakers, and sound technicians hacking away at watermelons to recreate the slicing of knives through flesh. Day after tiring day, he finds himself losing his grip on reality, unsure of what the film he’s working on is about, and whether he’ll ever have his expenses reimbursed and be allowed to escape.

The Myth Of The American Sleepover (15)
(David Robert Mitchell, 2010, Us) Claire Sloma, Amanda Bauer, Marlon Morton, Matt Jacobsen. 96 mins
As low-key as it is low-budget, this is a thing of beauty. The plot is basically Dazed And Confused relocated to Michigan: high-schoolers (including a flirt with the hots for a pool-cleaner and a drop-out pining for the girl of his dreams) make the most of one last hurrah. But the film's mood is all its own, characterised by an elegiac score, easygoing performances and gorgeous cinematography.

There's something nasty in the recording studio. A sound engineer supplies the effects for an Italian horror movie, but the creepiness doesn't stay confined to the screen for long.
[Rec]3 Genesis (18)
(Paco Plaza, 2012, Spain) Carla Nieto, Leticia Dolera, Diego Martín, Alex Monner, 79 mins

With his weird, giallo-inspired drama about an English sound engineer coming apart in Italy, director Peter Strickland confirms himself as a serious British film-making talent
Three years ago, British film-maker Peter Strickland grabbed us with his debut, Katalin Varga, an eerie revenge drama unfolding in the central European countryside. Arresting as it was, nothing in that movie could have given us any clue to this quite extraordinary followup: utterly distinctive and all but unclassifiable, a musique concrète nightmare, a psycho-metaphysical implosion of anxiety, with strange-tasting traces of black comedy and movie-buff riffs. It is seriously weird and seriously good.
Toby Jones plays a mousy sound engineer called Gilderoy from Dorking in the 1970s; he has taken a job in a post-production studio in Italy, the Berberian sound studio of the title. These facilities are presumably in Rome, but there is to be no high-minded cinephile swooning over the history of Cinecittà and the like.

A timid unsure man Gilderoy (Toby Jones) has just flown in from London to Italy and shuffles through the corridors of a nearly abandoned building. He is greeted coldly by a detached but beautiful secretary Elena (Tonia Sotiropoulou) who directs him to a sound studio, it seems the 'silenzio' light never stops flashing above it as the film progresses. He is greeted by his new employer the sleazy producer Francesco (Cosimo Fusco) and after a few days begins to unravel due to work pressures and strange occurrences, which lead to even more puzzling developments and horrific scenarios that question the reality of the films premise entirely. I approach discussing Berberian Sound Studio with total caution, as I am not entirely sure what I experienced. The...

Artificial Eye have exclusively sent us the official U.K. poster for Berberian Sound Studio.
Directed by Peter Strickland (Katalin Varga), Berberian Sound Studio premiered earlier this year at the Edinburgh International Film Festival to rave reviews (read ours here) and is guaranteed to make a lasting impression.
With a screenplay constructed by Strickland himself, the film stars Toby Jones (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) amongst a scattering of lesser known, yet equally as impressive actors, namely Antonio Mancino (Blue Dress), Cosimo Fusco (Angels & Demons) and Tonia Sotiropoulou (Cool).
Gilderoy (Jones), a reserved and modest British sound engineer, is hired by Italian director Santini (Mancino) to provide the score to his latest film. However, as Gilderoy immerses himself more and more in the work, he soon finds the macabre scenario having a truly nightmarish effect on his mind.

He rarely leads an ensemble, but Toby Jones pops up in more major films than most of Hollywood’s top stars. In just the last year he’s been seen (and heard) in Captain America: The First Avenger, The Adventures of Tintin, The Hunger Games, Snow White and the Huntsman, My Week with Marilyn and most recently, Red Lights. The actor is now set for a leading role in a new psychological thriller Berberian Sound Studio.
Premiering at Toronto next month, the film from Peter Strickland gives Jones his own Blow Out-esque role as he plays a sound engineer working for a horror maestro. While it looks a bit more over-the-top and chaotic than Brian De Palma‘s masterpiece, I can’t complain when this fantastic character actor is given a chance to lead. Check out the first trailer and new photos below for the film also starring Cosimo Fusco,...

Total Film’s sponsored movie at FrightFest 2012 will be Berberian Sound Studio. Peter Strickland’s eerie, beautifully crafted film tells of a mild-mannered English sound technician (Toby Jones) who goes to Italy to work on a full-blooded horror movie. Faced with language barriers, an overbearing producer (Cosimo Fusco), loneliness, cramped studio interiors and a deluge of gratuitous images, his disheartenment turns to distress to mental disintegration… A love letter to the ‘70s heyday of Italian horror, Berberian...
