Arlene Phillips has claimed that Strictly Come Dancing lost its spark on Saturday due to the absence of Bruce Forsyth. Show regular Forsyth missed his first ever episode at the weekend after being struck down with flu. The 81-year-old's co-presenter Tess Daly took over his usual role of introducing the dances and judges' comments, while Claudia Winkleman and Ronnie Corbett were drafted in for additional hosting duties. Speaking to The Sun, axed panellist Phillips commented: "Bizarrely, I thought the show missed [Bruce]. It's not until you haven't got Bruce there that you realise how he really (more) »

Tess Daly takes over presenting duties after Brucie is laid low with flu – but who should fill her shoes backstage?
Calamity has befallen Television Centre – Bruce Forsyth, the stalwart of Strictly, the bulwark of the BBC, the leader of light entertainment, is off sick with flu. Which means Tess Daly, normally confined to backstage where she subjects the contestants to her own very special personal brand of interviewing, is stepping out on to the dance floor to present the main show.
So who is going to take her place backstage, to provide consolation, congratulation and interrogation? I'm presuming it will be a man, so he can dance with Tess at the start of the show in the excruciating little skit that has become part of the weekly routine. So here are my suggestions (or fears) – let us know who you would put in Bruce's place:

It will be the first time in the show's history that the presenter, Bruce Forsyth, will not be hosting this week's installment of "Strictly Come Dancing" since it began in 2004. Bruce has had to pull out of the show due to a flu illness.
A BBC spokesman announced that the 81-year-old presenter has taken "doctors orders" to miss the show. The hosting spot will be filled by his co-host Tess Daly.
The spokesman had this to say about Bruce's absence: "Unfortunately, due to a bout of the flu and on doctor's orders, Bruce will be unable to host Strictly Come Dancing this Saturday. However, Tess Daly will be stepping into his presenting shoes."
No announcement has been made to say who will replace Tess Daly's backstage duties on the show, as it is traditional that the dancing couple go to her to have a chat and await the judge's score. »

The X Factor may be triumphing in the ratings, but there are still several million viewers who are choosing cha cha chas, Bruce Forsyth and scantily-clad female dancers over Simon Cowell's music factory. It's guaranteed to kick your weekend off with a bang, so make sure you have some Nurofen ready for Sunday morning. Rule Two: Crack into the red wine every time a contestant mentions the fact that they "just want to make it to Blackpool". Have a second glass if Craig Kelly happens (more) »

Justin Lee Collins has said that Bruce Forsyth was "horrible" to work with on Strictly Come Dancing. The comic and TV presenter, who hosted spinoff show Strictly Come Dancing On Three during the first series, said that Forsyth's "tone and demeanor" were not pleasant when he interviewed him. The Friday Night Project star told Love It magazine: "He's horrible! I had to interview Bruce three times. He was not pleasant and I didn't like his tone or demeanour. "I was terrified before our first live interview, then during it, he told me my questions were ridiculous. The awkwardness continued and I was thinking, 'Oh man, why are you being like this'. My mum used to tell me the more unpleasant a person is to you, the more you should kill them with kindness, so I kept being nicer and nicer to him. (more) »

Bruce Forsyth has been criticised by anti-racism groups following his public defence of Strictly Come Dancing star Anton Du Beke. The show's presenter recently dismissed Du Beke's racism controversy by claiming that critics need a "sense of humour". He later clarified his remarks by insisting that he does not condone offensive language. Last weekend, Du Beke apologised for describing his celebrity dance partner Laila Rouass as a "P**i". Despite calls for him to be sacked, the BBC has indicated that it will not be taking further action over the matter. Responding to Forsyth's comments, Hope Not (more) »

Bruce Forsyth has insisted that he does not "excuse or condone" racism after an interview in which he said that the Strictly Come Dancing race row had been blown out of proportion. The judge earlier told TalkSport that people should have a "sense of humour" over Anton Du Beke's use of the term "p**i" to his celebrity partner Laila Rouass off-camera. However, Forsyth has now moved to clarify his comments, stating: "I have been asked by a number of journalists to clarify what I meant and am therefore issuing this statement via the BBC, though I must emphasise that these are (more) »

Bruce Forsyth has insisted that Anton Du Beke should not be fired from the BBC for making a racist remark. The Strictly Come Dancing star made the comment to his celebrity partner Laila Rouass off-camera. He has apologised for his actions, but anti-racism groups have called for him to be removed from the reality series. Speaking about the controversy, Forsyth argued that people should not take Du Beke's "slip up" so seriously. "We used to have a sense of humour about this," the 81-year-old told TalkSport. "You go back 25, 30, 40 years and there has always been a bit of humour about the whole thing. "At one time the Americans used to call us 'limeys', which doesn't sound very nice, but we used to laugh about it. Everybody has a (more) »

Strictly Come Dancing star Craig Kelly has refuted claims that Bruce Forsyth is too old to present the show. The actor revealed that he disagrees with comedian Justin Lee Collins, who recently called for the 81-year-old to stand down from the BBC One ballroom programme. Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, he insisted: "[It's] absolute rubbish. Bruce is a legend. He's still sharp and he makes me laugh. I don't think you could do this show without Bruce." Strictly Come Dancing host Bruce Forsyth has reportedly called for an end to criticism of new judge Alesha Dixon. The 81-year-old presenter spoke out in defence of Dixon at a workshop for BBC staff in West London, The Sun claims. Forsyth is quoted as saying: "The show has been so hyped up this year and the criticism of Alesha has been unnecessarily harsh. She should be given a chance - the girl's got guts." Dixon's debut as a panellist on the BBC One programme has received a frosty response from some viewers and critics. (more) »

Justin Lee Collins has called on Bruce Forsyth to retire from Strictly Come Dancing and described him as "very rude". The presenter, who fronted spinoff Strictly Come Dancing: On Three in 2004, told the BBC that Forsyth is "too old" to continue on the reality talent dance programme. Jessie Wallace has slammed the "spiteful" weight jibes she endured during her stint on Strictly Come Dancing. The former EastEnders actress admitted that she was mortified when the show's host Bruce Forsyth introduced her as "Jelly Wallace" in one live episode last year. Wallace has since lost two stone with an intensive diet and exercise regime, dropping from a size 14 to a size 8. Reflecting on her Strictly experience, the star told Celebs On Sunday: "There's only so much I can take. When I did Strictly, the word 'jelly' was said instead of my name and I don't think it was an accident. "It's spiteful. I've had the p*ss taken out (more) »

Bruce Forsyth has laughed off Strictly Come Dancing's critics who have continually predicted that he will exit the show. The veteran presenter, 81, also hit out at reports that the programme failed to match The X Factor in last year's ratings, claiming that it was impossible to compare the two Saturday night shows. "There's been a little bit of speculation, but as you can see I'm still here," said Forsyth at the seventh series press launch. "Ever since this show started, I've been rumoured to be leaving. On the first series, I was going to leave and not be back for the second series. After the second series, I definitely wasn't going to be back for the third series. And on the third series, I definitely wasn't going to be on the fourth, the fifth or the sixth series. But now here we are on the seventh series and I'm »

Alesha Dixon will replace Arlene Phillips as a judge on this year's Strictly Come Dancing, say reports. According to The Sun, BBC bosses have axed the 66-year-old choreographer because they want to "inject some youthful glamour" into the panel. Craig Revel Horwood, 44, Bruno Tonioli, 53, and Len Goodman, 65, will all apparently return alongside host Bruce Forsyth, 81. "It's nothing personal against Arlene - she's been brilliant," said a source. "But the bosses want to bring in younger viewers - the 16- to 34-year-olds that (more) »
