Sins of the Past: Buso-Garcia’s Sophomore Feature a Familiar Exercise
Returning with his first feature since his 1999 debut Paging Emma, Puerto Rican writer-director Roberto Buso-Garcia brings us a haunted house thriller, The Condemned, which attempts to serve classic spine-tingling chills at the same time as it explores dark historical circumstances through a sort of rudimentary post-colonialist lens. While there are fleeting moments of foreboding during its initial set-up, Buso-Garcia’s dependence on a nearly constant eerie score and clichéd details soon give way to disinterest, culminating in not only a predictable ending but the addition of an extremely erroneous and useless final twist that feels about as satisfactory as the film does as a whole.

Strand Releasing has acquired N. American film distribution rights to Roberto Buso-Garcia's Los condenados (The Condemned) thriller, starring Cristina Rodlo and Rene Monclova. Variety reports that a spring release is being planned for the film which also includes Axel Anderson, Rocky Venegas, Luz Odilea Font, Marisé Álvarez, Dolores Pedro, José Caro, Miosoti Alvarado, Amanda Lugo and Irma Méndez and Daisy Granados. In The Condemned, determined to restore her dying father's reputation, Ana travels to the remote town of Rosales. Decades ago, he settled there and opened his first free clinic for cancer research. He launched an illustrious medical career — and fell in love. Ana plans to celebrate her father's scientific and humanitarian achievements by transforming the old family mansion into a world-class museum. She will preserve his legacy, and also breathe new life into the forgotten Rosales.
