One of the fascinating things about Hong Kong cinema during its prime was its ability to go beyond what at times would be acceptable and really push the boundaries of good taste. The result could be some incredibly visceral images that could leave the viewer speechless. Whilst the end products themselves may not have always been particularly good, you would at least be left having a strong opinion about what you had experienced. Sometimes this ability did not always create something edifying and the worst excesses and prejudices would be revealed. This leads us to “Body Weapon” a movie that certainly will create a reaction.

The Iceman Cometh, Clarence Fok's 1989 Hong Kong martial arts film, achieved classic status on the strength of Fok's facility with multiple elements: humor that could be silly without being juvenile, dazzlingly choreographed action sequences, a story filled with wit, and charming lead performances (Yuen Biao, Maggie Cheung). There's a kind of elegance to it. Iceman, the new remake starring Donnie Yen and directed by Law Wing-cheong, is aggressively inelegant. When Ming warrior He Ying (Yen) awakens in modern Hong Kong after centuries frozen in slumber, he's burdened by his history — being unfairly accused of treason, stripped of honor, his family slaughtered. He's carrying a time-travel device that is activated by a metaphorically crude act, and tha...

When I reviewed the Blu-ray release of director Clarence Fok Yiu-leung’s latest action epic Special ID, I wrote: “The outstanding cinematographer Peter Pau (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) can shoot a fight scene at night in the rain as well as anyone in the martial arts biz, and the stunt direction by Bruce Law (The Raid 2) is as amazing as you’d expect.” (read the entire review Here)

Crazy stunts, complexly choreographed fight sequences, sinister villains. There’s no doubt that Special ID knows its target audience and does what it does extremely well. Fans of director Clarence Fok Yiu-leung’s previous hits The Iceman Cometh and Black Panther Warriors will be heaven as his newest showcases three mind-blowing fight scenes and tops it off with a suspenseful battle inside (and outside) a moving vehicle that impresses with its lack of CGI.

In many ways, Donnie Yen is the star Bruce Lee might have become had he lived longer. Yen was the first star in Hong Kong to use mixed-martial-arts grappling and jiu-jitsu in his fight scenes; Lee, the master of “whatever works,” would have approved. Yen has always been the best actor among his action-movie compatriots; Lee strove for the same, as his surviving writings contain as many meditations on performing and stardom as martial arts. Thus, it’s a little sad to think that Lee would have inevitably made a film like Yen’s 2013 effort Special ID, now playing a limited run in American theaters: while its action scenes are sharp and professionally made, there’s little else about the movie which can say the same.

Since it's a Hong Kong martial arts film that delivers exactly what it promises — nothing less, nothing more — the success of Clarence Fok Yiu-leung's Special ID will rest exclusively on its viewers' tastes.
Few will be converted to appreciating the genre by its wispy characters and semi-incoherent storyline, but fans will find their expectations perfunctorily met. Insanely dangerous stunts? Check. Obnoxious evil baddie? Check. Intricately choreographed fight sequences that are the film's raison d'être? Check, check, check.

Donnie Yen puts his very famous fists of fury (and feet, too, for good measure) to good use in Clarence Fok Yiu-leung’s new crime actioner “Special ID” by, from the looks of it, pretty much beating the crap out of everyone who crosses his path. I’m not sure if any of what he’s doing are proper police procedure, but hey, he’s undercover, so allowances must be made. Check out a new trailer for the film below, along with a poster. The film is hitting U.S. theaters in March, but will be available on VOD a month before that. Zilong “Dragon” Chen is an undercover cop deep inside China’s most ruthless crime syndicate. ‘Special ID’ has a very big problem: the story of its making (a boring ego-driven tour de force between movie makers and movie stars that crippled the final product) is better than the story within the movie itself. That’s tough, as Mr. Yen’s fans eagerly hoped ‘Special ID’ to be Donnie‘s triumphant return to contemporary rough and dirty Mma-style brawling films after his 6 years ‘classic-fu’ hiatus (that fortunately left gems like ‘Wu Xia’ for us to enjoy). Don’t get me wrong: the movie has good fighting scenes that, although not quite as good as the ones in ‘Flashpoint’, are far from disappointing. Oh, and a fairly impressive car chase. But that’s about it. Almost everything else looks like a sample book of patches covering up the holes...

In the Information age where even the smallest news detail is exposed online before a film is released, there are some things that are better left unseen at the risk of spoiling the element of surprise. However, being an eager action fan for all things involving Donnie Yen putting the beatdown in true bad ass fashion, I couldn't help share this fight scene clip for Clarence Fok's Special ID. It features Yen laying a path of destruction on a gang of thugs in a crammed kitchen and it looks brutally awesome. The other two major fight set-piece is at the mahjong parlors and a broken highway bridge. Among the other action highlights beside the fight scenes is the insane vehicular mayhem. The car stunts...

Tiff’s Midnight Madness program turned 25 this year, and for two and half decades, the hardworking programers have gathered some of the strangest, most terrifying, wild, intriguing and downright entertaining films from around the world. From dark comedies to Japanese gore-fests and indie horror gems, the Midnight Madness program hasn’t lost its edge as one the leading showcases of genre cinema. In its 25-year history, Midnight Madness has introduced adventurous late-night moviegoers to such cult faves as Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused and Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. But what separates Midnight Madness from, say, Montreal’s three and half week long genre festival Fantasia, is that Tiff selects only ten films to make the cut. In other words, these programmers don’t mess around. Last week I decided that I would post reviews of my personal favourite films that screened in past years. And just like the Tiff programmers,...

Action director Donnie Yen is taking the fierce "Ultimate fighting" style as previously shown in the Hong Kong contemporary crime thriller Spl and Flashpoint to the next level in Clarence Fok's Special ID. For the action design, Yen continues to incorporate a variety of Mixed Martial Arts techniques, fusing not only stand-up striking but also Brazilian jiu-jitsu and grappling to choreograph the brutal street brawl while utilizing great fighting talents such as Ken Lo (Drunken Master II), Andy On (Unbeatable) and Collin Chou (Flashpoint). While the latest behind-the-scenes video feature an interview with the action hero himself without English subtitles, it does however showcase his action directing efforts and it looks pretty damn good. The ever-busy Donnie Yen has a slew of movies coming out in the next few years, but I’m always a bigger fan of his more contemporary actioners. I don’t mind seeing him in some big-budget epic Wuxia movie, mind you, or a period throwdown like “Dragon”, but Yen’s style is so ferocious that I think it just begs to be used against street toughs and gangster types. That’s apparently what we’re going to be getting in Clarence Fok’s “Special Identity”, and I for one couldn’t be happier. Check out the film’s first trailer below. It’s in Chinese and has no English subtitles, but I think you can still guess what’s going on. Translation: Yen is a cop. He beats up bad guys. The End. The Donnie Yen starring remake of Clarence Fok's The Iceman Cometh is shaping up to be a rather big deal. So big, in fact, that they're splitting it up into two films rather than the originally intended single outing. And when you've got that much frozen-ancient-warrior-reawakening-in-modern-times action what you clearly need is a longer trailer. So here's one that's twice as long as the original. Marvel at Donnie's flowing locks!...

Last week, rumors were swirling that “True Legend” badass Vincent Zhao was holding up production of director Clarence Fok’s “Special Identity”. Zhao, apparently, was unhappy with several changes that were made to the script, so much so that he refused to participate in filming. Now it’s official: Zhao has dropped out of the film, which means those of us who were looking forward to watching him battle Donnie Yen will just have to suck it up and move on with our lives. Damn it. Anyway, the good news is that Andy On has been recast in the role, so all is not lost in the awesomeness department. Here’s what Donnie Yen had to say on the subject: I went with his agent to persuade him (Chiu) when I heard about the matter (Chiu’s displeasure over the script changes), but unfortunately, it failed. Donnie Yen makes me feel like a slacker. The number of films the man has made over the past few years is staggering, especially when you consider that most of them are pretty fantastic. So it shouldn’t be surprising that the man has yet another motion picture in the works, one that requires him to once again beat the ever-loving crap out of other people. Those are usually the best kind of Donnie Yen flicks. Next up for the “Ip Man” star is director Clarence Ford’s “Special Identity”, a film which also stars Jing Tian, Vincent Zhao, Zhang Hanyu, Kun Yang, and Qi Daji. The main focus, of course, is getting to see Donnie Yen and “True Legend” alumni Vincent Zhao square off against one another. Since Yen, along with Bruce Law, is also serving as the picture’s action director, I think we can expect something memorable.

Donnie spoke about the fact he is really excited about his first collaboration with kung fu star Vincent Zhao, “We never worked together before, although I really appreciate his talent,” Yen told reporters who gathered at a Beijing hotel on Thursday to mark the commencement of filming.
Vincent also said the audience should expect, “lots of breathtaking car-racing scenes.” I have been waiting for these two to make a movie for years, both have excellent kung fu and i was very impressed with Vincent in the movie “True Legend”, with director Yuen Woo Ping, who also brought Donnie Yen to the audience all them years ago.
