In 1989, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier disappointed the box office. Reeling from bad reviews, the film only grossed $49 million domestically from a $33 million budget. That’s a worrying figure for a franchise considering that the previous movie, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, had made a huge $133 million. It likely eventually eked out a profit, but it did badly enough that the studio was looking to reboot the series without any of the original stars by making a Starlet Academy movie. Harve Bennett, the producer of all the films since Star Trek II, thought this would be the way to continue the crew’s big-screen adventures, but Paramount thought differently. With Star Trek: The Next Generation picking up momentum on TV, it became clear that Captain Picard and company would eventually move to the big screen, but, given that the franchise’s 25th anniversary was right around the corner,...

The world was starting to become a different place in 1991 when "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" was released. Not only were fans reeling from the 1989 disaster that was "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier," but the collapse of the Soviet Union created the possibility that enemies didn't have to be enemies forever. That mindset was brilliantly expressed by the writing team of Leonard Nimoy, Nicholas Meyer, Denny Martin Flinn (and we guess a little by Lawrence Konner and Mark Rosenthal, something that has been historically disputed by Nimoy) with the Federation, and especially Capt. Kirk, having to explore the possibility that if the Klingons could not be friends, they could at least be the annoying in-laws we all have to tolerate from time to time. Tackling real-world issues ...

Anyone that has read this site for a long time knows I am a pretty big fan of the original "Star Trek" universe. I'm talking Captain Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty and the gang. I have reviewed all six of the last Original Series DVD releases as well as the DVD releases of Star Trek: First Contact, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis and all four seasons of "Enterprise". Strangely enough I don't consider myself a Trekkie since I love the show, but don't have a very deep knowledge of the universe, and that's an understatement. My favorite movies from the franchise are Wrath of Khan and Voyage Home and I have no idea when was the last time I saw the original Motion Picture, Search for Spock, The Final Frontier or The Undiscovered Country. However, that will all change come May 12 as Paramount will release all six of the original Star Trek films...
