On a dark night, pharma tycoon Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood) invites an old acquaintance to meet him in his childhood home. Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly), an attorney with the U.S. government, is surprised by the overture: He’s arguing a landmark lawsuit against Roderick’s company for its driving role in the opioid epidemic, and he’s never gotten the elusive magnate on the record. So, he approaches the boarded-up house at the end of a cul-de-sac, its rotting frame illuminated only by the pale glow of distant lightning. Inside, Roderick shocks Auguste by confessing his guilt—not only accepting the accusations against his company, but claiming responsibility for the recent, mystifying deaths of his six children.

Creator Mike Flanagan’s latest and final series collaboration with Netflix, “The Fall of the House of Usher,” takes on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Much like “The Haunting of Bly Manor,” Flanagan’s latest uses a classic short story as the central narrative framework to remix a variety of Poe’s macabre poems and short stories but with Flanagan’s signature pathos. Unlike previous Netflix series, “The Fall of the House of Usher” eschews the familiar melancholy and dials up the gallows humor for a twisted tale that’s unafraid to get grisly.
In the process, however, it’s less effective at organically adapting Poe.
Like the source story, “The Fall of the House of Usher” begins with Auguste Dupin (Carl Lumbly) called to a crumbling estate for a final meeting with the deteriorating Roderick Usher (Bruce Greenwood). With time drawing to a close and haunted by horrific...

"What if 'Succession' but Edgar Allan Poe?" is a pretty damn fine pitch for a horror series if you ask me, especially when it's coming from Mike Flanagan. The modern horror maestro has been a practical machine for Netflix these last several years, churning out hit after hit like "Gerald's Game," "The Haunting of Hill House," and "The Haunting of Bly Manor." He's since secured a deal to develop projects for Amazon Studios, but before he leaves, he's gifted Netflix with one final offering. Titled "The Fall of the House of Usher," the show sees Flanagan turning his eye to the works of the father of Gothic horror fiction, Edgar Allan Poe, as filtered through the modern-day world of cutthroat corporate culture and familial dynasties. So, yeah, it's "Succession" with a whole lot more literal bloodshed.

Mike Flanagan's grip on the horror genre will continue on Netflix this fall with The Fall of the House of Usher.
Netflix on Tuesday released the trailer for The Haunting of Hill House creator's next project.
The drama is based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe and follows the Usher family as "past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth."
It's a compelling hook and the official trailer promises we're in for a terrifying journey across eight episodes.
Will there be a way to stop this mysterious individual from the past, or will the Ushers realize that death is inevitable?
The footage raises many questions about the family's dealings, and truthfully, they may be one of the most despicable families on the small screen.

Mike Flanagan is set to leave Netflix, but he has one last October horror treat for the streamer. “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Flanagan’s Edgar Allen Poe-inspired limited series, will premiere October 12, Netflix announced Thursday.
Titled after an 1839 short story from famous gothic writer Poe and based upon it and several of his other works, “The Fall of the House of Usher” focuses on the titular Usher family, led by ruthless siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), who have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. "Stranger Things" might be Netflix's flagship show, but it turns out that Mike Flanagan's "The Haunting of Hill House" is another crown jewel for the streamer. As you may already know, streamers don't release numbers as a general rule, but "Hill House" was known to be a big hit for Netflix upon release. Both critic and viewer ratings were through the roof and independent polling from Parrot Analytics in 2018 found the limited series was keeping pace with massive, long-running network horror shows like "The Walking Dead" and "American Horror Story."
But you just need to look at where Netflix put their money to tell you how big that show was for them. They went right into a spiritual sequel, "The Haunting of Bly Manor" and then greenlit "The Fall of the House of Usher" from the same Flanaverse team right after that. These are all tied together in...

Adapted from the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, this version follows siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, two “ruthless” forces who have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into a massive financial empire. Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.
Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, which serves as the basis for the show, features themes of madness, family, isolation and identity.
It’s been a long road for the series, which was halfway through production when Langella was fired and his scenes had to be reshot.

Mike Flanagan is one of the most exciting names in horror right now, but his journey to getting there was a bit stop-and-go. He got his first taste of box office success with 2013's "Oculus," the filmmaker's well-received adaptation of his own short movie, "Oculus: Chapter 3 – The Man with the Plan." After that, Flanagan helmed three horror movies in rapid succession. Of the trio, one of them went directly to Netflix (the underrated home invasion thriller "Hush"), while another one of them spent several years floundering in limbo after its U.S. distributor, Relativity Media, declared bankruptcy ("Before I Wake").
The last of these three movies was 2016's "Ouija: Origin of Evil." For those who haven't seen it, "Origin of Evil" is a much better film than its risible subtitle would suggest. It's also vastly superior to 2014's "Ouija," a flash-in-the-pan Universal/Blumhouse hit that grossed more than 20 times its...

Of all the shows Mike Flanagan and his production company Intrepid Pictures made for Netflix – The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, The Midnight Club, and the upcoming The Fall of the House of the Usher – the Christopher Pike-inspired The Midnight Club was the only one that was designed to be an ongoing series. The finale left the story wide open to continue… so of course Netflix went ahead and cancelled it. But Flanagan had said that if the show wasn’t renewed, he would go online and spill all of the details on what they had planned for season 2. True to his word, Flanagan took to Tumblr to reveal the Midnight Club season 2 plans soon after Netflix confirmed the show is over.

If it's one thing Mike Flanagan knows, it's his horror. To be honest, though, I really expect nothing less from a person who was born in Salem, Massachusetts (Jealous!). He's had spooky vibes in his bones from birth. Perhaps most well known for his Netflix projects like the supremely creepy 2018 series "The Haunting of Hill House" (an adaptation of the Shirley Jackson novel of the same name) and last year's incredible "Midnight Mass" about Catholicism, sobriety, and vampires, Flanagan has proven he has what it takes to make scary stories for the screen. His films have also garnered much love and attention over the years — I, myself will never forget the time I watched "Hush" in a heavy metal-themed bar and felt true paranoia for the rest of the evening — and he's got even more hair-raising projects coming down the line with "The Season of Passage" based on a Christopher Pike...

Netflix hasn’t announced a premiere date for that one yet, but Flanagan took the opportunity to hype it up a bit during a recent interview with The Wrap… and even compared to the Giallo style!

Shirley Jackson, Henry James — now it's Edgar Allan Poe's turn to get the Mike Flanagan miniseries treatment. The "Haunting" anthology creator is hard at work on yet another literary adaptation, this time in the form of "The Fall of the House of Usher." The show will mark his latest project for Netflix, coming after his acclaimed slasher film "Hush" and Stephen King movie "Gerald's Game," as well as the first two seasons of "The Haunting," his limited series "Midnight Mass," and "The Midnight Club."

Mike Flanagan typically shies away from jump scares in his horror, but he’s breaking all the rules with Netflix’s “The Midnight Club.”
The premiere episode of Flanagan’s latest series, co-created with Leah Fong, just set a Guinness World Record for the most scripted jump scares in a single episode of television.
“The Midnight Club” is available to stream now on Netflix.
The episode that earned the distinction, “The Final Chapter,” clocks in 21 jump scares in rapid succession during a very J-horror inspired tale. Flanagan and his creative team were presented with a certificate by a Guinness representative for the accomplishment.
Flanagan told Deadline in a statement, ““I thought, ‘We’re going to do all of them at once, and then if we do it right, a jump scare will be rendered meaningless for the rest of the series.’ It’ll just destroy it. Kill it finally until it’s dead,...

Mike Flanagan’s latest Netflix series, The Midnight Club is an adaptation of not just one Christopher Pike novel, but many of the prolific 80s and 90s YA author’s works. In the past, there has been only one adaptation: a 1996 made-for-tv movie of Fall Into Darkness starring Tatyana Ali and Jonathan Brandis (available for free on YouTube).
The series, by comparison, will see filmed adaptations of not just the titular book, but also The Wicked Heart, Gimme a Kiss, See You Later, Witch, Road to Nowhere, and The Eternal Enemy
So what do you need to know about the books before you dive into the series? Let’s break it down!

Plot: At a hospice with a mysterious history, the eight members of the Midnight Club meet each night at midnight to tell sinister stories – and to look for signs of the supernatural from the beyond.
Review: It probably goes without saying that at this point, people are going to watch The Midnight Club simply because Mike Flanagan’s name is attached to it. After the acclaim for The Haunting of Hill House, Flanagan’s The Haunting of Bly Manor was met with a slightly less enthusiastic welcome. But, Flanagan’s Midnight Mass was a masterpiece of storytelling. If the pattern holds, The Midnight Club would be a weaker entry into the horror maestro’s oeuvre of shows. Luckily, I am glad to say that the series has broken expectations. The Midnight Club is nothing like any of Flanagan’s previous films or series but impresses nonetheless by combining an original...

The name "Mike Flanagan" might as well be a license to print money these days, with "The Haunting of Hill House," "The Haunting of Bly Manor," "Midnight Mass," "Gerald's Game," "Doctor Sleep," and just about anything else he's ever put his name on developing massive and dedicated fanbases. For the most part, Flanagain deals with the horrors of adulthood, but his new Netflix series "The Midnight Club" has him firmly in the teen sphere. Based on the book of the same name by prolific YA horror author Christopher Pike, "The Midnight Club" sees a group of terminally ill youngsters sharing scary stories with one another in hospice to pass the time, coming face to face with the ghastly horrors of their own creation.
