During a fraught time for L.A., the team behind the 1992 original White Men Can’t Jump took a shot on a personal story about the bonds forged through pickup basketball.
Writer-director Ron Shelton — who had helmed 1988’s Bull Durham, earning himself an Oscar nom for the script — got the idea for the film from his weekday routine: After working on screenplays in the morning, he would head to the Hollywood Ymca near his office to shoot hoops at lunch. White Men producer David V. Lester recalls Shelton’s fascination with the athletes’ squabbles and chatter.
“It annoyed him at first because he just wanted a workout, but the writer in him saw the magic of these moment-to-moment relationships on the basketball court,” Lester tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Before each Smackdown (and the next is for 1991), Nick Taylor suggests Supporting Actresses from an alternate ballot...
What do you call the experience of watching a film with only one or two Oscar nominations to its name and discovering it’s one of the most jaw-dropping, accomplished films of its year? Maybe the Academy honored strong, worthwhile films across the board, maybe it didn’t, but you’re still left wondering how this stone cold masterpiece only got a modicum of the attention it so richly deserved. Case in point for 1991 is Boyz n the Hood, where writer/director John Singleton earned an Original Screenplay nomination and made history as the first black filmmaker ever nominated for Best Director. Boyz n the Hood ranks among the best of an Academy vintage that's largely filled with formally impressive, generically diverse, time-tested films. Its inclusion is even more exciting considering how easily it might not have happened.

Empire fans, get ready to meet more of Cookie’s family. Vivica A. Fox (Kill Bill) is guest starring in Season 2 of the hit Fox drama as the older sister of Taraji P. Henson’s fan-favorite character. According to EW.com, which first reported the casting news, there are no details regarding what brings Cookie’s older sibling to town. In Season 1 of Empire, we met Cookie’s sister Carol, and as the show’s executive producer Ilene Chaiken tells EW, “Cookie’s other family members are troublesome to say the least,” which means that fans should be expecting more drama between the two sisters and less hugs. Fox’s past TV credits include Curb Your Enthusiasm, Raising Hope, and Alias. She is just one of many high profile guest stars Empire has lined up for Season 2, joining a guest cast that already includes Chris Rock, Marisa Tomei, Kelly Rowland,...

Your fears about Empire getting too bloated with big game guest stars have not gone unnoticed by the powers that be. In an interview with Deadline, showrunner Ilene Chaiken said they were telling stories about the main characters on Empire and not about the guest stars on Empire. But we're getting Marisa Tomei, Pitbull, Mariah Carey, Chris Rock, Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys, Kelly Rowland, Ludacris, Adam Rodriguez, Andre Royo and Tyra Ferrell on Empire season two, but no Oprah Winfrey. At least not now. "We're actually being really careful not to let it change the dynamic of the show — and frankly, not to have so many high-profile names that it feels like their show and not the Lyon show," Chaiken...

Every once in a while a film comes along which is able to transcend cultural, social and racial boundaries and present a relatable and poignant tale which is immediately accessible to a wide spectrum of audiences. One such film is the South Central La-set, coming-of-tale tale, Boyz N the Hood. Having recently celebrated the twenty year mark since its initial cinema release (and now out on Blu-ray), it’s a film which touched the hearts of many, due to its moving and sometimes unflinching look at the lives of a group of teenage kids living in a constant, gang-inspired suburban war zone.
The debut film of director John Singleton (who, at the ripe old age of 23, showed remarkable maturity and a solid gasp of human nature for his youthful years) it’s the tale of the daily struggles of a teenager named Tré Styles (alongside best friend and neighbour from across the street,...

Director John Singleton’s acclaimed 1991 crime drama Boyz N the Hood is making its way to high-definition Blu-ray on July 19. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will bring out the film in a 20th Anniversary Edition priced at $19.95.
Nominated for two Academy Awards, the movie tells the story of three friends growing up on the streets of Los Angeles’ South Central. Ice Cube (Lottery Ticket) stars as Doughboy, an unambitious drug dealer; Morris Chestnut (TV’s V) as his brother Ricky, a college-bound teenage father; and Cuba Gooding Jr. (The Hit List) as Ricky’s best friend Tre, who aspires to get out of the Hood. Laurence Fishburne (Armored) plays Gooding Jr.’s strong father. Of course, as they try to get out, a tragedy pulls them back in and violence seems like the only answer.

The title sounds like it's straight from the mouth of Charles Barkley, which is perfect for this inside jam on playground basketball. Since the politikally korrect krowd has never been known to defend middle-class, white males, 20th Century Fox will not likely endure weird pressure-group nonsense over the title when ''White Men Can't Jump'' scores big opening numbers this weekend.
From writer-director-Hollywood Y gym rat Ron Shelton, ''White Men Can't Jump'' is a fast-breaking, trash-talking, black-and-white buddy movie starring Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson that's likely to score big on both ends of the boxoffice court -- in the inner city and in the suburbs.
About the funnest scam movie since ''The Sting, '' Harrelson stars as Billy Hoyle, a long-shorts, back-hatted hayseed from Louisiana who's descended upon the asphalt of the Venice Beach basketball courts to hustle some dough. Not just a sportsman, Billy has some real incentive -- two nasty sharks, not happy over his failure to point shave back East, are all over his butt.
Playing the dopey hick, Billy soon attracts the attention of the brothers, mainly one in-your-face, backdown twirler named Sidney Dean (Wesley Snipes) who gets blind-sided by silly-looking Billy's courtside manner and finds himself on the short end of a $68 shootout. But Sidney Dean learns and rebounds from getting his pocket picked at midcourt: He approaches Billy to join his team, namely the two of them will work the South L.A. courts and pick the brothers' pockets.
Their game-plan: Sidney trash talks black basketballers into games of two-on-two where they get to pick his teammate. No fools, their first-round selection is always the silly looking white boy. That's when showtime begins. Sidney, with his backspin drives, and Billy, with his sweet jumpers, not to mention the head games they work outside the paint, jam some fast green.
But Billy gets picked off down low when Sidney goes backdoor on him, setting him up for a wicked reverse slam as he and their two ''opponents'' take all Billy's dough. For Billy, it's ''heartbreak time'': not only are the sharks closer, but his sexy, supportive girlfriend (Rosie Perez) has about had it with his losing ways.
Smartly spreading his story beyond the end lines of the basketball court, writer-director Shelton has knocked down a sparkling, slice-of-life Americana story. As rough and shiny as chain nets on a sweltering Summer Day, ''White Men Can't Jump'' is a poetic, rag-tag triumph.
All-star votes for Snipes, with his Earl ''The Pearl'' Monroe moves, and Woody Harrelson, with his Rick Barry perimeter touch, for their gutty, all-over-the-screen performances and high fives to Perez as Harrelson's spunky, ''Jeopardy!''-fanatic girlfriend. Tyra Ferrell gives some good minutes as Snipes' dues-paying, ambitious wife. Former Bruins Marques Johnson and Nigel Miguel, plus downtown gunner Freeman Williams, add power on the boards.
Tech contributions: All hustling three-pointers.
