George A. Romero has died at age 77 after a “brief but aggressive battle with lung cancer,” according to a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times. Almost singlehandedly responsible for the zombie genre in its current form, Romero directed “Night of the Living Dead” and its many sequels, most notably the consumerism allegory “Dawn of the Dead” and “Day of the Dead,” the underrated entry he considered his favorite.

Cinephiles, rejoice! The Cannes Film Festival has announced its 2014 line-up today and as usual, it’s pretty damn impressive. A lot of the movies announced were already expected to play at the prestigious fest, but there are definitely a few surprises as well.
Leading the way is Nicole Kidman’s Grace of Monaco, which will be the opener. Following that we’ll have David Cronenberg’s promising Maps to the Stars and Animal Kingdom helmer David Michod’s The Rover, two films that I absolutely cannot wait to see. Joining them will be Bennett Miller’s Oscar-hopeful Foxcatcher as well as Olivier Assayas’ Sils Maria. The Artist director Michel Hazavanicius will be here too with his new film The Search, and Mike Leigh returns with Mr. Turner. But that only scratches the surface, and there’s still more to come, as next week will see the announcement of the Critics’ Week and Directors’ Fortnight line-ups.

This morning Cannes director Thierry Fremaux announced the films which will make up the 67th Cannes Film Festival lineup.
The announcement confirmed that the opening film, Olivier Dahan’s much-anticipated Grace of Monaco, is the only cut of the film, clearing up previous confusion on the matter. It is a strong opener, and the premiere screening of How to Train Your Dragon 2 to celebrate twenty years of Dreamworks Animation is a crowd-pleasing move certainly however it is the new films from Atom Egoyan, Jean-Luc Godard, Mike Leigh and David Cronenberg which have been warmly welcomed.
Tommy Lee Jones’ second feature film, The Homesman, plays in Compettion, up against the new Dardenne Brothers film, Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall and many more. Cannes Film Festival director Thierry Fremaux sent out mixed messages in his -- very long, as usual -- preamble to announcing this year's Cannes Film Festival lineup. First he mentioned a focus on newer, fresher filmmakers, but mentioned elsewhere that "Cannes is an event for the regulars." Predictably enough, the latter statement turned out to be closer to the truth: of the 18 films competing for this year's Palme d'Or, 13 have been to the dance before. (And of the Competition virgins, Bennett Miller and Xavier Dolan are hardly unknowns.) Early on, meanwhile, Fremaux made the initially bold statement that 15 women were in the Official Selection, promising a bounty of female directors for jury president Jane Campion to consider. It turned out to be a slight manipulation of the truth: several of those women are involved in portmanteau films, while only two of them -- Naomi Kawase and surprise inclusion Alice Rohrwacher...

Since I started writing for Sound on Sight during Fantasia 2011, 2012 was my first full year of writing for the site. I started the year by joining Josh on the Mousterpiece Cinema Podcast. During the year I attended Fantasia for the 15th time in 16 festivals and I attended Ridm (Québec’s only Documentary Film Festival) for the first time.
The following is an expanded version of my Sound on Sight ballot for the best feature films of 2012. I should probably explain that I see fewer feature films every year than say Ricky or Josh. On the other side of that, as the Festival Director of the YoungCuts Film Festival, I watch more short films than most (over 1,000 short films per year). It is entirely possible that I didn’t see your favourite feature film this year. On the other hand, I also probably watch some feature films that you never saw.

“I shall call you… Rabbit,” is the most chilling line of any film this year. Spoken slowly but deliberately with a slight lisp and a faint Germanic accent by Vincent D’Onofrio, the voice alone places Bob somewhere between Hans Beckert and Jeffrey Dahlmer. D’Onofrio’s performance as Bob is a virtuoso effort by one of our great (albeit under-utilized) actors, delicately inhabiting a brute, like a ballerina trapped in a gorilla’s body.
“When I said I cast Vincent D’Onofrio, I was told that he was too TV… What The Fuck?! Have you not seen Full Metal Jacket?”
-Jennifer Lynch
Bob is a taxi driver whose specially modified cab makes it easier for him to kidnap women, drive them back to his isolated rural home, rape them and kill them.

An adolescent’s sixteenth birthday marks a turning point in life when maturation occurs at a much more rapid pace and the teenager begins to be faced with difficult and important decisions that will shape their future. The same can be said of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival, set to kick off its sixteenth edition tomorrow: its Super Sweet Sixteen promises to be nothing if not interesting. That’s not to say that the main focus of North America’s largest genre film festival is changing; in fact, between prolific director Takashi Miike’s festival opener For Love’s Sake – fresh from Cannes and having its North American premiere – and the Canadian premiere of animation studio Laika’s Paranorman, which closes the fest three weeks later, filmgoers will have a whopping 160 films from around the world to choose from. Sitges eat your heart out.

I just came back from the Fantasia Film festival press conference and I am already overwhelmed. I’ve been looking over the schedule all afternoon (which includes around 126 films in just over three weeks) trying to figure out how to find time to watch everything I want to see. One of this year’s most anticipated films is a horror anthology titled The Theatre Bizarre featuring cult icon Udo Kier (Blood for Dracula, Melancholia) with film segments directed by Richard Stanley (Hardware, Dust Devil), Tom Savini (Night of the Living Dead remake), Buddy Gionvinazzo (Life is Hot In Cracktown), Douglas Buck (Sisters remake), Karim Hussain (Subconscious Cruelty), David Gregory (Plague Town), and Jeremy Kasten (Wizard of Gore remake). The film will have its World Premiere at the 2011 Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal on July 16th at 9:20pm, and you can be guaranteed we will be reviewing it. Severin Films...
