It’s been six years since Fox canceled Pitch after one season, but Mark Paul Gosselaar can’t forget about how it almost made him want to give up on Hollywood.
During a Saved by the Bell panel at ’90s Con Tampa Sunday, Gosselaar recalled how he felt when Fox axed the Kylie Bunbury starrer that revolved around the first woman to play (and pitch!) for the majors.
“I wanted to quit the industry after that ended,” Gosselaar, who played catcher Mike Lawson in the drama from Dan Fogelman, Rick Singer and Kevin Falls. “That’s one of those, you feel like in your lifetime you’re not going to be handed opportunities like that, so for that to pass in the fashion that it did it was sort of a gut punch. That’s a role though, that I don’t make light of it, but I had to go therapy with my wife.

When the Writers Guild of America went on strike May 2, the early days of the work stoppage saw scribes channel their creativity into picket signs that reflected their rage over such issues as AI and fair pay as their union went head to head with the studios and streamers that comprise the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
As the strike hits day 100 on Aug. 9, however, many writers have turned to new creative outlets that don’t violate the WGA’s rules of working on AMPTP-backed films and TV shows. While some struggle to write without external deadlines or after the picket line grind, others say they are content to remain busy making up for lost time with family.
The last strike, in 2007, lasted 99 days. This time, the studios and streamers were 90-odd days into the walkout before both sides agreed to even talk about talking again. So with no clear end in sight,...

Exclusive: Sad update on the plan to bring the story about the 2021 California School for the Deaf football team to the small screen; the limited series is not moving forward.
After several months in production, the project from ABC Signature and Disney Branded Television was shuttered earlier this year as part of the parent company’s massive wave of cuts.
The studio had partnered with the school and the California Department of Education to tell the story of the team’s historical undefeated season and how it earned a spot in the California State Championship game for the first time in school history. Historically a team that had never experienced anything close to a winning season, they went undefeated all the way to the state title game in their magical season.
The untitled project for Disney+ was set to star Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) as the team’s coach.

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Songbird Road Part Two,” the 12th episode of the third season of “This Is Us.”
The tragic story of Nicky Pearson came to a dramatic but open-ended close on the 13th episode of the third season of “This Is Us,” in an episode entitled “Songbird Road Part Two.” After the Big Three found their uncle (Griffin Dunne) with a pistol and a bottle of booze, they coaxed him into joining them at the hotel. Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and even Rebecca (Mandy Moore) attempted to get him some help. It was the first time the older Pearsons spent time with their uncle, and the first episode in which Dunne shared scenes with Moore. By the end of the installment the character hadn’t really changed, but he did agree to go to a...

The story of Jack and Nicky finally came to light on This Is Us. In "Songbird Road: Part One," viewers learned what happened between Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Nicky (Michael Angarano/Griffin Dunne) in Vietnam and their final interaction after the war. That story happened as viewers also saw the Pearson kids Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) find their long-lost uncle. For the team behind the scenes, it was like "an archeological dig," according to writer Kevin Falls. "Where you kind of know there's this iconic character, this great father and husband, and he seems almost too good to be true. And as you're digging, it feels like you found this...

Last year’s Producers Guild Awards told us which movie — “The Shape of Water” — would win the Oscar for Best Picture weeks before the Academy Awards. In fact 20 of the previous winners of this important prize have then gone on to Best Picture victories.
For the 30th annual PGA ceremony slated for Saturday evening, January 19, at the Beverly Hilton, we already know that the top choice will be at the very least a major front-runner for this year’s Oscar. Could it be a blockbuster like “A Star Is Born,” “Bohemian Rhapsody” or “Black Panther”? Or maybe a critical favorite such as “Roma,” “Green Book” or “The Favourite”?

The Producers Guild of America hands out its awards on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. That is three days before the academy announces the nominations for the Oscars. While the PGA ceremony is not televised, it is an important stop on the road to the Oscars.
The PGA Awards has an enviable track record at presaging the eventual Best Picture winner at the Academy Awards. The guild and the academy have agreed on 20 of the most recent 29 Best Picture champs, including last year’s double winner. “The Shape of Water.”
Since both groups expanded the Best Picture category, the PGA has predicted 70 of the 81 of the Best Picture nominees over the past nine years. Last year the guild went seven for nine in previewing the Oscars line-up: “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Get Out,” “Lady Bird,” “The Post,” “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” The other four guild nominees were “The Big Sick,...

That does not mean that “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “A Quiet Place,” or “Crazy Rich Asians” will land Best Picture nominations, but it is a sign of strength and popularity. The movie Minority Report left me with a lot of questions. Or actually, it left me with frustrating answers to their questions. The movie asks: If you can catch someone before they commit a crime, should you still imprison them? It’s supposed to be a moral conundrum, but the way the movie frames it, it’s […]

One of the most intriguing upcoming new shows has to be Fox's small screen adaptation of Minority Report, so we were very interested to see what the cast and crew had to say about it at Comic-Con in San Diego earlier this month.
After screening 20 flashy minutes of the pilot - which sees precog Dash helping a detective solve crimes before they happen - stars Stark Sands, Meagan Good, Wilmer Valderrama and Laura Regan joined executive producers Kevin Falls, Darryl Frank and Max Borenstein to give us some hints about what's coming up, so read on for 8 things to expect from the show:
1. The series is all about humanising precogs.
"We've seen shows that have copied Minority Report since the movie which is all about stopping crime, stopping murders before they happen, and in the movie we follow the police department which has an infrastructure in place to do that,...

After Fox unveiled the first 20 minutes of the Steven Spielberg-executive produced show Minority Report to great applause today at Comic-Con, executive producer Kevin Falls quickly teased that Tom Cruise’s appearance is “something that may or may not happen.” However, per one insider on the show who was clarifying Falls’ statement to Deadline after the panel, that guest star might be just wishful thinking. Since Frank Underwood became president on Netflix’s House of Cards, I’ve had this geek fantasy of him debating Josiah Bartlet, Martin Sheen’s idealistic and professorial president from The West Wing. Bartlet’s Washington, D.C., was the proverbial shining city on a hill, a place where intelligent, well-intentioned people gravitated to do the peoples’ business. Underwood’s capital is the nasty underbelly of a trough coated by man’s craven pursuit of power for power’s sake. It’s practically Kennedy’s Camelot versus Nixononian realpolitik.
