Have you ever wanted to see your own idea made into a feature film? If so, New Regency Productions and Break Media's new contest called "Prototype" may be for you. Check out the details here.
Over the last couple decades it has appeared that the film industry has become increasingly profitable and movies seem to be making more and more money. While this is good for the long-term staying power of the industry, it raises some serious questions about what lengths these production companies are willing to take to maintain their momentum. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas recently went as far as saying that they predict the face of the film industry to change dramatically in the near future. In order to keep making money, production companies will need to keep investing in large, universally appealing projects (blockbusters) rather than small, personal niche films. Break Media is teaming up with film veteran Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers, GI Joe) for Higher Power, a high-octane, effects-driven sci-fi thriller that marks the company’s expansion into feature-length entertainment.
Shot from the point of view of surveillance cameras, drones and first person footage, Higher Power follows Joe, a man who wakes up in an alley and discovers his life is under the control of a brilliant psychopath bent on domination and revenge. The story explores what happens when an “Average Joe” is given the uncontrollable power of God.
The project will be released in chapterized segments online and in full-length format across traditional distribution platforms. Higher Power will be directed by Hollywood filmmaker and VFX specialist Matt Santoro (300, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) from a script by Julia Fair.

Lorenzo do Bonaventura, best known for producing mega hits like the Transformers franchise, has decided to test the waters of multi-platform releasing. He’s teamed up with Break Media to produce Higher Power, “a sci-fi thriller about a regular guy who acquires the power of a demi-God.”
If everything goes as planned the film will be released in multiple formats. There’s Netflix, Amazon and VOD, but Power will also be cut into chapters for Break Media’s male-targeted online network.
di Bonaventura:
“We are very excited about the opportunity to partner with Greg, his team at Break Media, and Matt and Julia on this project, which I believe can be a new model for bringing high-concept, long-form content to the public.”
Matthew Santoro is slated to direct from a script by Julia Fair.

Listeners of Fangoria Radio (Sirius Xm Satellite Radio channels 102 and 155, respectively) are always guaranteed a scoop or two every Friday night. Here are a few from recent weeks:
• Mike Elizalde (pictured), Hellboy II: The Golden Army’s Oscar-nominated makeup FX artist, will be creating more creatures for pal Guillermo del Toro. Elizalde and his Spectral Motion company have been signed to work on del Toro’s Don’T Be Afraid Of The Dark remake for Miramax. Based on the much-loved 1973 ABC TV movie (about a country home plagued by tiny critters hiding in the walls), the new Don’T Be Afraid Of The Dark will be helmed by newcomer Troy Nixey, with del Toro producing and Mimic’s Matthew Robbins co-scripting with the Mexican maverick. Nixey is a comic-book guy who directed a short fantasy called Latchkey’S Lament, which caught the producers’ attention. “Troy’s a very cool guy,...

There’s something about grocery stores. They have a sort of charm that’s currently going three for three, as far as recent horror/sci-fi entries with that setting go. Both The Mist and last year’s Splinter were excellent examples of the “trapped in a market” theme, and now comes Warner’s Raw Feed DVD release Alien Raiders (out February 17)—which, while not overly original, is nonetheless pretty awesome.
The film opens with some shaky handheld insight into our protagonists, getting ready for their next mission. Intercut between video clips and the main titles are shots of hands preparing some seriously heavy firepower. This is a risky move; it basically promises, “This flick is going to have bad-ass written all over it.” And it works. The characters we’re following are a team of operatives/mercenaries/soldiers of some sort with rad names like Ritter (Carlos Bernard), Sterling (Courtney Ford...

Straight up. "Aliens Raiders" as a title does not do it for me, and that alone almost prevented me from seeing it. I’m glad I did see it, however, because Alien Raiders is a good film, but the title honestly made me itchy. Now, I say this not as an off-hand “this is just me” comment, but because this film has had a number of different titles since its creation ("Supermarket" [which I love as a title] and "Inhuman" [which is the title of one of Sonic Youth’s best songs, so…]), Given this “identity crisis,” as Dread Central so aptly put it, I know the name has been of some concern. But I get it. Genre film. Old-school genre film. And since this movie is going straight to DVD I imagine it doesn’t hurt to cast the biggest net. So, I’ll concede.
