Back in 2009, a horror film called Orphan told us the story of a married couple who adopts a 9-year-old Russian girl only to discover that she’s actually a criminal adult passing herself off as a child. The film was loosely based on the true story of Barbora Skrlova, a 30-something woman who pretended to be a 13-year-old and did some very twisted things that were very different than what we saw in Orphan. In 2012, a sad case that made it into news reports reminded people of Orphan. It was the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by American parents who began to suspect she was much older than records said she was. The Grace case has been covered on Dr. Phil and the docu-series The Curious Case of Natalia Grace, and now the Hulu streaming service is moving forward with a Natalia Grace-inspired...

Actor and rapper Ice Cube went in a fresh direction with his third Friday movie, After Next. It was the first holiday-themed Friday film, which was an inspired decision on Ice Cube’s part.
When Ice Cube decided ‘Friday After Next’ should be holiday themed Ice Cube | Maury Phillips/Getty Images
The Friday franchise was a more lighthearted departure from the usual ‘hood’ movies Ice Cube was familiar with. In an interview with CNN, he shared that one of his main motivations for penning Friday was to offer a different perspective on his roots.
“I knew things were bad in my neighborhood, but I didn’t feel like these movies feel at the end … When I was growing up, I didn’t feel this depressed,” he said.
Friday After Next would continue the humor that the franchise was mostly known for. But unlike the other two Friday features, the second sequel would revolve around Christmas.

What’s the saying? Oh yeah… third times the charm and the Resident Evil series is no exception. For our third outing we’re here to explore the aftermath of the apocalypse with Resident Evil: Extinction (watch it Here). This one is pretty divisive with the consensus being some people, like myself, loved this film while others felt this was the beginning of the downward slope of sequels of the franchise. Hear me out as to why I sing its praises. For one, it tells a cohesive story and gives us a side of Alice that we’ve been dying to see. We get more new characters that bring gravitas to the story as well as a fully fleshed out villain and it’s a lot of fun. Plus, its pays homage to The Road Warrior in the best way. So, let’s hit up the Sand Dunes of Vegas,...

As the dawn of the new millennium approached, the world would start to see a trend of films that would become very mainstream. These types of movies are action horror video game adaptations. As stated in our previous video, there have been a number of different ones, but nothing stood out more than Resident Evil. In 2002, we were graced with the first in this series. It may not have been the critic’s favorite, but it did well enough at the box office to spawn a sequel. The name of that sequel is Resident Evil: Apocalypse (watch it Here). With a title that big, you would think the filmmakers went for bigger, better and more destructive…right? For the most part, yes and they even packed in some surprises for fans of the series. So today on Horror Revisited we ask that you suit up and strap in for Alice...

In 2024, Mike Epps joined the star-studded cast of Madame Web. In the origin story of Cassandra Webb, Epps stars as O’Neil. While his role is merely a supporting one, as usual, he stands out thanks to his comedic flair that he often brings to his renditions. Although the movie has received a plethora of negative reviews, and a not so warm box office opening, Epps’ part in the movie shines. Originally starting out in stand-up comedy, Epps’ role in Madame Web is another prime example of how he can transfer his comedy skills to the big screen with ease.

Actress Dakota Johnson is not making headlines this time around for her role in a romantic drama or a gripping thriller. Instead, it is due to her disappointment with the cast of the recently released superhero film, Madame Web. The actress, 34, participated in extensive driving stunt training for Sony’s film, but she was not permitted to do any “crazy things” while working on the film.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Johnson was asked if she was excited to be doing her own stunts in Madame Web, helmed by the British director S. J. Clarkson. The film is based on the same-named character from Marvel Comics. Johnson plays Cassandra Webb, better known as Madame Webb, a clairvoyant with the ability to foresee future occurrences in the ‘spider world’.

Sony and Marvel Studios have been collaborating on the recent Spider-Man films that are connected to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe – but on the side, Sony also has their “Spider-Man Universe” films, which are not connected to the MCU Spider-Man movies but are based on characters who were introduced in issues of Marvel’s Spider-Man comic books. Sony makes these movies without the input of Marvel Studios, and the latest entry in this franchise – following Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, and Morbius – is Madame Web, which just reached theatres a couple days ago. JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray has given the film a 5/10 review that you can read at This Link – but now we want to know, what did you think of Madame Web? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

The problem with ‘Madame Web’ begins with its title. It appears that the makers had some thoughts around introducing a spider girl/woman universe, which apparently did not translate as expected and were lost for a title to whatever was made. ‘Madame Web’ was conceived in 2019, approved for production in 2020, filmed in 2022, and reportedly underwent reshoots. It probably aimed to expand the ‘Spider’ universe following the success of ‘Venom’ and ‘Into the Spider-Verse’ in 2018.
‘Madame Web’ with its uncertain tone and complex storyline is categorised as a suspense thriller. The film reimagines an elderly clairvoyant character from the comics as a young paramedic portrayed by Dakota Johnson. However, the movie struggles to define its identity.
It starts awkwardly with a poorly executed scene set in 1970s Peru with a pregnant Mary Parker (Emma Roberts) expecting a baby during one of her expeditions, which also doubles up as Cassandra Webb aka...

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web film had a restrained social media presence during its promotions. Despite being one of Sony’s multiversal Marvel films introducing new characters the high anticipation did not translate into favorable ratings or reviews for the project. With that said, Dakota Johnson recently made a statement about Madame Web that has essentially confirmed that Sony’s Spider-Man Universe is doomed for good.

As mentioned above, Johnson took on the role of Madame Web, while Sydney Sweeney portrayed Julia Carpenter. The cast also features Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor, Adam Scott, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, and Zosia Mamet. Sj Clarkson, known for her work on Succession, was responsible for directing the film.

Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web has now been released in theatres worldwide, and unfortunately, the film has not connected at all with audiences. The film has been slaughtered by critics who all criticized its lazy writing, performances, and inability to deliver an entertaining superhero film.

S.J. Clarkson’s Madame Web is Sony’s latest attempt at maintaining rights to the Marvel characters they purchased decades ago. It’s a film so miscalculated, so reminiscent of the pre-mcu age of comic-book cinema, that it reminds audiences averse to the Marvel and DC cinematic universes of how much sloppier and stultifying the genre used to be.
The problems begin with the decision to adapt the character of Madame Web in the first place. In the comics, Cassandra Web is a blind, paralyzed old woman who spends her life hooked up to life support issuing precognitive predictions to Peter Parker and his allies. Even within the extended Spider-Man mini-universe, Cassandra is an afterthought, a fourth-string character at best. This film completely revamps Cassandra, turning her into Cassie (Dakota Johnson), a young paramedic who suddenly develops psychic abilities that draw her into a world with metahumans all linked by...

2024 is going to be light on superhero movies (relatively speaking) but comic book cinema will be present on the big screen on Valentine's Day. Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off movie "Madame Web" is hitting theaters, introducing several brand new spider-heroes into the ever-growing Marvel multiverse.
Following in the footsteps of movies like "Venom" and "Morbius," as well as this year's "Kraven the Hunter," Sony is once again making the most of the Marvel Comics characters it has the rights to in the larger "Spider-Man" franchise. Specifically, it sees Dakota Johnson bring Cassandra Web, aka Madame Webb, to life alongside an impressive supporting cast.
But is this a one-and-done? Or is the studio setting up more for the future? We're going to discuss the movie's post-credits scene situation in spoiler-free fashion. Seriously, we're not going to spoil anything. We're just here to arm you with information so you can be ready on opening weekend.

Trailers are designed to stir up excitement, the amuse-bouche that whets your appetite for the three-course meal. Occasionally, the oldest marketing trick in the book backfires. When Sony dropped a sneak peek at Madame Web, the newest addition to the company’s roster of Spider-Man–related films and another of their corporate crossovers with the good folks at Marvel Studios, the reaction was … not exactly what they hoped for. The same fans they were hoping to get riled up about a batch of fresh Spidey-adjacent characters began to mock the clip,...

Madame Web was finally revealed to the public Monday night after the Sony/Marvel film held its premiere in Los Angeles, and the first reactions have already hit social media.
The superhero movie stars Dakota Johnson in the title role, a woman who develops psychic abilities. The cast also includes Sydney Sweeney, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim, Mike Epps, Emma Roberts and Adam Scott. Directed by S.J. Clarkson, Madame Web was written by Clarkson, Matt Sazama, Burk Sharpless and Claire Parker.
Madame Web is hitting theaters at a time when comic book movies are experiencing something of a slump, following poor box office returns and critical scores for Marvel’s The Marvels and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and DC’s The Flash, Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.

Dakota Johnson is giving audiences something to chew on about Hollywood’s inner workings when she’s not in the Amazon researching spiders with her mom. Speaking with L’Officiel, the Madame Web star got candid about the challenges of movie making and how executives could be stifling creative minds in the streaming arena. Last year, Johnson’s experience with her film Daddio opened her eyes to several problems plaguing the film industry. The film, which also stars Sean Penn, encountered several challenges during production, highlighting the uphill battle of selling a “riskier” idea to studios.
“We made a movie called ‘Daddio ‘that was sold at Telluride to Sony Classics, which was amazing, but it took a lot of fighting to get that made,” Johnson said. “People are just so afraid, and I’m like, ‘Why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave?’ It just feels like nobody...

A big-budget live-action adaptation of a cult Nickelodeon animated fantasy series, the return of a sports docuseries that transformed the global appeal of Formula 1, a new animated feature written by the incomparable Charlie Kaufman, and another season of a reality dating show that inspires equal parts love and hate on social media are among the standout projects hitting Netflix in February.
Netflix’s big feature release this month is the animated film Orion and the Dark, which debuts Feb. 2. Written by Charlie Kaufman, the celebrated scribe behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Adaptation, the film is an adaptation of Emma Yarlett’s children’s book about an anxious kid who is scared of the dark. It’s a weird month on Netflix in February; one that will probably require you to be open-minded about the shows and movies you’re willing to consume on the service.
There are quite a few library TV series arriving this month, for example. If you’re ready to start binge-watching Monk, My Wife and Kids, or acclaimed show Warrior, you’re in luck, as those complete seasons will be available. The Blacklist season 10, Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12, Brooklyn Nine-Nine seasons 1-4, and Young Sheldon season 6 will also be hitting the ‘Flix.
In terms of what’s new, there’s a ton of foreign language content and true crime stuff, but original English language stuff will largely be unscripted fare like Love is Blind, which is back for a new season. There are a few bits and bobs on the way outside of that, though. Netflix’s animated movie Orion and the Dark will debut,...

Madame Web Starcast Salary: Dakota Johnson Earns 669% Higher Than Sydney Sweeney (Picture Credit: IMDb)
American superhero film Madame Web is all set to premiere in February 2024. Starring Dakota Johnson in the lead, the film, helmed by Sj Clarkson, is based on a Marvel comic of the same name. The film is the fourth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, which also includes characters like Venom, and a film on Kraven is already being made.
The Fifty Shades actress was the first one to come on board to play Cassandra Webb, a woman with psychic abilities who can look into the future events of Spider-World, along with three superwomen with powerful futures.
After Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney joined the cast of this superhero film. And these stars are being paid a fortune for the film. In fact, while the Euphoria star is paid much less than the Fifty Shades star, Dakota...

Although the prospect of seeing another attempt at reworking the “Bad News Bears” formula within another sport may feel like it would be a complete failure, the film The Underdoggs, manages to remain somewhat likable and entertaining thanks in large part to a strong ensemble cast that seems aware of what types of film they are in and exactly what needs to be done to make it work.
The film follows the familiar trope of a washed-up ex-professional athlete Jaycen Jennings (Snoop Dogg) who, after hitting rock bottom, is afforded an opportunity to redeem himself through community service. Service which ultimately leads to a fulfilling character rebirth as that former self-indulgent, hard to get along with, and “lonely” player rediscovers what exactly drew him to the game in the first place.
Director Charles Stone III – perhaps best known for Drumline (2022) and Mr. 3000 (2004) – holds the film together well and paces it economically.

I've written an awful lot about how 2023 was a rough year for superhero movies. While fewer comic book films are hitting the big screen this year, it seems like the trend is going to continue in the early going. "Madame Web" is now poised to lose the Valentine's Day box office battle to "Bob Marley: One Love." And, relative to what we're used to seeing Marvel movies pull in, the numbers are the opposite of heroic.
Paramount's Bob Marley biopic is currently expected to win the holiday week with between $27 and $33 million in its first six days of release, per Deadline. The film comes out mid-week on Wednesday for the Valentine's Day crowd and will also have the benefit of the following Monday President's Day holiday. Meanwhile, Sony's latest "Spider-Man" spin-off "Madame Web" is expected to pull in just $25 million during that same stretch. That would be a...

With the “big game” only a few weeks away, do you need some movie fuel for your football “fever”? Something brand new, I should say since most gridiron fans probably have their shelves stocked with Any Given Sunday, The Replacements, and Rudy. Well, Amazon has just the thing with a raucous comedy about a ragtag bunch of preteen misfits in peewee football, coached by a guy whose heart is slowly melted by them. Sounds like a variation of last year’s football, er soccer, and adult inspired by real events comedy set in American Samoa, Next Goal Wins. Yes, it’s a tried and true formula, but this flick has a twist in its casting, as the coach is played by rapper Snoop Dogg. He provides the “spark” (if you get my drift) and the inspiration for the movie’s title, The Underdoggs.

Sony Pictures’ “Madame Web,” a standalone origin story in the studio’s array of “Spider-Man”-based Marvel characters, has been granted a theatrical release in mainland China. The film will open in the country on March 1 — two weeks after the title’s Valentine’s Day bow in North America and multiple international territories, including the Chinese-language markets of Taiwan and Hong Kong.
The release marks a welcome opportunity for Sony, which, along with the other traditional studios faced difficulty in securing theatrical runs in China over recent years. Two years ago, the company’s smash hit “Spider-Man: No Way Home” became one of the five highest-grossing films of all time at the global box office, but it achieved that milestone without playing in the Chinese marketplace — once a reliable boost for Hollywood releases only a decade ago.

The puckish appeal of Charles Stone III’s The Underdoggs, a new spin on The Bad News Bears, is apparent from its opening title card, which offers a warning that its R rating was well earned, that no child should watch it, and that, well, the kids you really have to worry about are the ones whose parents don’t allow them to watch R-rated films.

Actress Dakota Johnson stars in ‘Madame Web’ and said that she put her trust in director S.J. Clarkson as filming it was “absolutely psychotic”. The Marvel film set in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe uses a lot of CGI effects to make the universe come to life, which was a different experience for Dakota.
“I’ve never really done a movie where you are on a blue screen, and there’s fake explosions going off, and someone’s going, ‘Explosion!’ and you act like there’s an explosion. That to me was absolutely psychotic,” Dakota said in an interview with EW.
“I was like, ‘I don’t know if this is going to be good at all! I hope that I did an okay job!’ But I trusted (Clarkson). She works so hard, and she has not taken her eyes off this movie since we started.”
