Madrid, Feb 24 (Ians) Paris Saint-Germain’s and former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has announced that he is retiring from international football after a record 180 appearances for Spain.
The 36-year-old, who will be 37 in March, published a letter on Thursday night, in which he confirmed he would no longer be available for the Spanish national side — nearly two years after he made his last appearance on March 31, 2021, as a substitute against Kosovo.
Ramos commented that new Spain coach Luis de la Fuente had spoken to him to explain he was no longer in his plans.
“The time has come, the time to say goodbye to the National Team, our dear and exciting Red Shirt (Spain’s colors). This morning I received a call from the current coach (de la Fuente) who told me that he won’t be counting on me, regardless of the level I can show or how I continue my sports career,...

Doha (Qatar), Nov 22 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique said he was “the leader” of the national team as he looked ahead to the 2010 champion’s opening match in the World Cup finals against Costa Rica on Wednesday.
“The leader of the national team has to be the coach because it’s me who decides who plays and when we travel and things like that,” said the Spain boss.
“I am a leader who has to give solutions to the team,” he added, insisting he was “very calm and looking forward to starting and giving people something to celebrate.”
Enrique said he had “maximum respect for Costa Rica,” who are appearing in their sixth World Cup finals.
“We know Costa Rica and their players and their coach (Luis Fernando Suarez) is an expert. I am sure they are going to be competitive, and we have to be attentive and get it...

Doha (Qatar), Nov 22 (Ians) Spain kick off their FIFA World Cup campaign against Costa Rica on Wednesday looking to build on their performance in last summer’s European Championships, where they reached the semifinals before losing on penalties to eventual champions Italy.
Spain coach Luis Enrique has put his faith in a young squad of players who, despite their youth, already have plenty of experience in domestic and European football.
Unai Simon is a fixture in goal, while Aymeric Laporte and Eric Garcia will probably play in central defense, with Jordi Alba and Dani Carvajal as the full-backs.
There could be a Barcelona trio in midfield, with Gavi and Pedri accompanying either Sergio Busquets or Manchester City’s Rodri, while Alvaro Morata will lead the attack, partnered by two of Dani Olmo, Ferran Torres and Ansu Fati.

Doha (Qatar), Nov 19 (Ians) Fc Barcelona may not have won the La Liga title since 2018-19 and their Champions League since 2014-15, but the Spanish giants will still have a huge presence at the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The decision taken by Spain coach Luis Enrique, to call Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde into his squad means that Barca have supplied 17 players to the Qatar World Cup.
The club now have the most players in Qatar, followed by Bayern Munich and Manchester City, who have 16 players at the tournament.
Bayern once boasted of 17 players but striker Sadio Mane has just been left out of the Senegal squad due to an injury.
The three clubs are followed by Al-Sadd Sc (Qatar/15), Manchester United (14) and Real Madrid (13), reports Xinhua.
The 19-year-old Balde has replaced Jose Luis Gaya of Valencia in the Spain squad after Gaya suffered an ankle injury in a training session.

Spain has qualified for the World Cup 12 times in a row, but in 2022, there will be a new wrinkle to its participation. The coach of the Iberian outfit, Luis Enrique, plans to stream on Twitch as he leads his team through the biggest soccer tournament in the world.
Enrique, a former player who roamed the midfield for top Spanish clubs Barcelona and Real Madrid, has been the coach of Spain’s national team since 2019. The 52-year-old is older than the average streamer, but that isn’t stopping him from offering an inside look at his team’s World Cup experience. In a video posted to Twitter and Instagram, Enrique promised that he would put no filter on his broadcasts.
“Streamers of the world, get out of the way,” Enrique said in his native language. “I’m heading downhill and I’ve got no brakes!”

Madrid (Spain), Nov 15 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique has made a surprise announcement that will take him closer to fans during the Qatar World Cup finals, by announcing he will become an online “streamer” during the tournament.
The Spain coach released a video in which he said he would be making live video connections with fans.
“The idea is simply to establish a direct relationship with the fans who could be interested in live information about the team, from a personal point of view of mine and the training staff,” said Enrique in his video, reports Xinhua.
“I am looking forward to experiencing and sharing the atmosphere and the pressure of a World Cup,” he added, saying that he would probably hold his first session on November 18.

Madrid, Nov 15 (Ians) Spain’s veteran Fc Barcelona midfielder Sergio Busquets is on the verge of his fourth World Cup, after 2010 where he helped Spain win their first title, 2014 and 2018.
Now he will once again be a key member of the Spanish midfield in Qatar, despite his age of 34.
“It’s been many years in the front line, enduring many things, both in the national team and in the club, passing continuous tests,” he said in an interview with Spanish ‘Panenka’ magazine.
He said Spain coach Luis Enrique has the full support of his players.
“Luis Enrique is the person most responsible for all the players in the squad. He is the one who works day by day, and knows all of them and what they can contribute. Madrid, Nov 12 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique had few surprises when he named his 26-man squad for the World Cup on Friday from the headquarters of the Spanish Football Federation just outside of Madrid.
The coach has picked a squad with an emphasis on youth, including players such as Fc Barcelona trio Ansu Fati, Gavi and Pedri, and other youngsters such as Yeremy Pino, Hugo Guillamon and Nico Williams, while again ignoring calls to include Paris Saint Germain’s veteran Sergio Ramos.
There is the experience in defense, with Jordi Alba, Dani Carvajal and Cesar Azpilicueta all included, although there was no place for Athletic Club Bilbao’s Inigo Martinez, with Valencia’s Hugo Guillamon, who can also play in midfield if needed, given the nod.

Madrid, Oct 30 (Ians) Saturday was a worrying day for Spain coach Luis Enrique as he saw two players who are in his squad for the FIFA World Cup leave their games through injury.
Fc Barcelona defender Eric Garcia and Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata both suffered injuries with just 12 days before Enrique is due to name his 26-man squad for the Qatar World Cup.
Garcia was forced off with a groin injury before the end of the first half of Barca’s 1-0 win away to Valencia, and was replaced by Marcos Alonso, reports Xinhua.
Robert Lewandowski’s 93rd minute goal decided the game which had looked set to end in a draw.
Morata also limped off with an ankle injury after just nine minutes of Atletico Madrid’s dramatic 3-2 defeat in Cadiz.

Madrid (Spain), Oct 3 (Ians) Villarreal’s Spain international striker Gerard Moreno is in danger of missing out on a place in the squad for the World Cup finals after suffering a relapse of his hamstring injury.
Moreno hasn’t played since September 11 and missed out on Spain’s recent UEFA Nations League matches due to the injury, but he was back in training on Monday when he pulled up with a relapse of the problem, sports papers El Mundo Deportivo and Diario As reported.
The relapse means Moreno will be out of action for at least three to four weeks (and possibly more), which leaves him very little time to prove his fitness to coach Luis Enrique before the cutoff date for naming the squad on November 13.

Paris, Sep 25 (Ians) Portugal have boosted their chance to the semifinals of the Nations League after a convincing 4-0 win over the Czech Republic on Saturday, topping the group in which Spain suffered a shocking 2-1 loss to Switzerland on the same day.
Portugal, who won the first edition of the tournament in 2019, moved two points ahead of Spain and will host their neighbours in Braga on Tuesday in the showdown of the group stage.
Diogo Dalot opened his international scoring account by hitting a brace with Bruno Fernandes and Diogo Jota also on target, reports Xinhua. Dalot put Portugal in front after 33 minutes as he carried the ball from the midfield into the attacking third before making a smart run into the box to finish Rafael Leao’s cut-back pass.
Fernandes doubled the lead in the first-half injury time before Cristiano Ronaldo committed a penalty for a handball only seconds before the break,...

Berlin (Germany), Sep 24 (Ians) To find several top European football teams in trouble at present seems a small consolation for German coach Hansi Flick.
With two months out from the 2022 FIFA World Cup’s kick-off, the 2014 world champion Germany has joined the struggling parties providing a poor performance against underdog Hungary in the Nations League and collecting the first defeat in 14 games under the former Bayern Munich manager.
With Italy having missed the World Cup, England, France and Germany are struggling in the home stretch for the World Cup.
With only Spain getting along well in the Nations League, the African, Asian and South American teams might be mulling over the possibility of breaking the evident domination of the European teams at the latest World Cups.
The past four World Cup titles were won by France, Germany, Spain and Italy, and one has to go back as far as 2002 to find Brazil taking the trophy.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 17 (Ians) Spain coach Luis Enrique brought in two new faces when he named his squad for the forthcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Switzerland and Portugal on Friday.
Betis striker Borja Iglesias and Athletic Club Bilbao winger Nico Williams were both included in the 25-man squad, which is also the last squad Enrique will give before naming his final group to the World Cup finals in Qatar.

Madrid (Spain), Sep 13 (Ians) Spanish La Liga club Espanyol have sold Spain international striker, Raul de Tomas to Rayo Vallecano for a reported fee of eight million euros, plus three more depending on variables.
Both clubs confirmed the move on Tuesday, ending a difficult few months for the striker, who now returns to the club where he scored 38 goals in two seasons on loan from Real Madrid between 2017-19.
The 27-year-old fell out with new Espanyol coach, Diego Martinez at the start of pre-season and has not played one minute of the new campaign (although he has supposedly been carrying an injury). However, the breakdown in relations has led the Barcelona-based club to sell him to Rayo for less than half the 20 million euros they paid to sign him from Benfica in January 2020.
The fee is even more surprising given Raul de Tomas’ statistics with Espanyol, netting 45 goals in...

Madrid (Spain), Sep 12 (Ians) The fifth round of matches in La Liga looks as if it has brought a premature end to the season of two top strikers.
Real Sociedad confirmed on Monday that Nigerian forward Umar Sadiq had suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his right knee in their 2-1 defeat away to Getafe on Sunday.
Sadiq had to limp out of the game in the first half and tests showed the full extent of the injury on Monday. The 25-year-old will need an operation and is unlikely to recover before the end of the season.
Sadiq just joined Real Sociedad from Almeria for a fee of over 20 million euros at the end of August, and the forward netted his first goal for the club a week ago in their 1-1 draw at home to Atletico Madrid.

Arsenal are set to move for Barcelona starlet Sergi Samper and will meet his £8.4 million buyout clause, according to Metro.
Mundo Deportivo reported that the midfielder could be Wenger’s second signing of the summer as he is a long way from breaking into Luis Enrique’s first team plans.
Players such as Cesc Fabregas, Jon Toral and Hector Bellerin have already made the move from Barcelona’s La Masia academy to North London.
Arsene Wenger has stated that he needs a potential successor to Mikel Arteta and after missing out on Arturo Vidal this week the 20-year-old could be a perfect fit.
Samper is seriously considering Arsenal’s offer, having grown frustrated playing for Barcelona’s B team but the Catalonia-based side would rather agree a loan deal.

You could say that it’s about time Arda Turan got his big break but that would be unfair on Atletico Madrid. The Turkish international made 127 appearances for the Rojiblancos and his trophy cabinet isn’t exactly bare. More importantly, during his four years in the Spanish capital he received a priceless education from Diego Simeone that made his application to the Barcelona-school-of-midfield-brilliance stand out above the rest.
Turan has developed from a fine playmaker into a world beater and one now deserving of playing at football’s highest level. His dribbling, pressing, energy and vision has been so finely tuned by Simeone that he will seamlessly slot into Luis Enrique’s like-minded midfield.
The 28-year-old’s versatility across the midfield offers Enrique a number of options. Barcelona’s 4-3-3 currently plays to the strengths of their deadly front three strikers, Neymar, Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Barcelona defender Marc Bartra has surprisingly revealed he wants to stay at the Nou Camp, despite looking set to leave this summer, according to Football Espana.
The 24-year-old looked almost certain to leave Barcelona during the summer, after a clause in his contract would have let him move on for a cut-price fee. Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Porto are just a few clubs who were interested in his services. However, the Spain international has vowed to stay with La Blaugrana and fight for his place at the Nou Camp next season.
The centre-back, who signed for Barca’s youth academy from Espanyol in 2002, finds himself behind the likes of Gerard Pique, Javier Mascherano, Jeremy Mathieu and Thomas Vermaelen in the defensive pecking order. However, despite looking to move on after only playing 14 La Liga games for the Catalans last term, he’s wants to remain a Barcelona player.

Reports in Spain suggest that Barcelona representatives Ariedo Braida and Albert Soler will fly to Turin on Wednesday to complete a deal for Juventus star Paul Pogba, according to Football Italia.
Pogba has been the talk of the summer so far with basically all of the world’s best clubs heavily linked with the France international. Now, according to those rumours coming from Spain, Luis Enrique’s side are front-runners for the former Man Utd player’s much sought-after signature.
Since leaving United as a teenager, Pogba has quickly turned himself into one of the world’s best midfield players. The 22-year-old Frenchman has been with the Old Lady since July 2012, and he’s got better with every season, to the point where his value has soared massively. He has made 129 appearances for the Serie A champions, netting 24 times in the process.

Manchester City will be hoping that history does not repeat itself when they take on Barcelona in the Champions League round of 16 tonight.
The fixture is a repeat of the tie at the same stage of the competition last season, when the Catalan giants came out on top with a 4-1 victory on aggregate.
Last season’s first leg, like tonight’s game, was played at The Etihad with Barca running out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Lionel Messi and Dani Alvez.
Still young in Champions League terms, City have shown they are finally acclimatising to the competition after coming through a very tricky group.
The Citizens finished second in group E that included Bayern Munich, As Roma and Cska Moscow. Goals from Samir Nasri and Pablo Zabaleta sealed a memorable 2-0 win over in Rome in the last group game to secure Manuel Pellegrini...

The dust has now settled after the release of the FIFA 15 demo and gamers have taken to social media, forums and football stadiums to voice their opinions on the latest instalment of the FIFA series.
Reactions have been varied from: “EA Sports have almost achieved perfection” to “Not feeling this FIFA 15 demo; don’t think I’ll be queuing up at the midnight release.”
FIFA 15 has added the ability to measure the emotional state of all 22 players in the starting line-ups – Liverpool’s Mario Balotelli will no doubt always be on edge.
Other improvements include that the pitch will show signs of wear and tear as the game progresses, players’ kits will look ready for a cringeworthy Ariel advert as they jump from slide tackle to slide tackle and defenders will now perform David Luiz’s favourite move of placing their arms behind their back to avoid conceding a handball.

The nominees for the 2012 Latin Grammy awards are in, and Dominican singer Juan Luis Guerra tops the list with six nods.
Guerra scored two of the 10 "Best Song" nominations for his "Azul Sabina" and "En El Cielo No Hay Hospital." The Dominican singer’s unique blend of merengue, bolero, bachata and rock has already earned him 12 Latin Grammys.
The list of nominees released Tuesday by the Latin Recording Academy includes both established musical titans such as Cuban jazz trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, and relative newcomers, including Afro-Colombian hip hop group Choc Quib Town.
Brazil's Caetano Veloso, who first came to prominence in the 1960s playing a samba-infused style of rock known as Tropicalia, is up for four awards. Caetano will also be honored as the "2012 Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year."
The Latin Grammys are scheduled for Nov. 15 in Las Vegas and will be televised by Univision.

Miami, Aug 5: Burglary has taken place at well-known salsa performer and Nicaraguan singer Luis Enrique's home in Miami, Us.
'A very strange feeling comes over you. You know that a stranger has entered the most sacred thing you have, which is your home. However, I have to say that I'm very lucky because I could have been here, alone or with my son, and that would have been a terrible situation,' the singer said Thursday in a communique.
In the statement, Luis Enrique added: 'I thank God that nothing worse happened. The items don't matter, they'll be replaced somehow. Your life.
