Capt. Jack Sparrow will sail again!
Although reports of a fourth 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie have been circulating since last fall, it wasn’t until this past Friday that Disney officially announced that it is on their 2011 slate.
Richard Cook, chairman of Walt Disney Studios, was joined by star Johnny Depp at the Disney-centric D23 Expo at the Anaheim Convention Center. According to Variety, Depp, dressed as Capt. Sparrow, sailed onstage aboard a pirate ship, and subsequently announced Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides would arrive in theaters in the summer of 2011.
In recent weeks, there has been plenty of speculation about the plot and cast of the new film, which is being written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio. Co-star Geoffrey Rush previously expressed interest in reprising the pirate Barbossa, while Keira Knightley has stated she would not prefer to return to the character of Elizabeth Swann. »

Rob Marshall, director of the 2002 best picture winner Chicago, is said to be closing in on a deal to helm Disney’s fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film. The choreographer-turned-director’s other credits include Memoirs of a Geisha and the upcoming ensemble musical Nine. Variety reports producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney have been meeting with a number of directors in recent weeks, because the studio wants to pull the Pirates film together and have Johnny Depp star in it before he does The Lone Ranger for the producer and the studio. It’s still unclear if Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley and Geoffrey Rush will also return. Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who penned the first three installments, are currently writing the latest. The first three films grossed $2.67 billion at the worldwide box-office. The last film, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, was released in 2007. Gore Verbinski directed the »

Gore Verbinski stepped out of the captain's cabin for Disney's fourth Pirates of the Cariebbean film, but Variety's BFDealMemo blog suggests the studio may have a new helmer in Rob Marshall. The blog reports that "sources say unless things break down at the last moment, Marshall will be steering the pirate vehicle’s next installment." Marshall has three big features under his belt: Chicago, Memoirs of a Geisha and Nine, to be released later this year. Is he the man to steer the Black Pearl into safe harbor? That's a rhetorical question, really, because the series is almost a high-profile blank slate right now. With the storyline of the original trilogy concluded, Marshall and screenwriters Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio would be free to do whatever they like with the series. Johnny Depp is obviously returning as Jack Sparrow, and Geoffrey Rush has said he would return as Barbossa; one »

Remember those end credits in “Grumpy Old Men” that had Burgess Meredith reciting a hilarious laundry list of sexual double-entendres? Well, now I have a new favorite perverse phrase – thanks to the biggest movie star in the world.
As we all remember, Johnny Depp was announced not too long ago as the star of a “Lone Ranger” movie – but instead of playing the man in the mask, he was set to play the Ranger’s Kemo Sabe. So naturally, when I spoke to Depp recently at the premiere of his new film “Public Enemies,” I had to get a status report. My question came out thusly: “So, are you workin’ on your Tonto?”
“That sounds lewd,” he said with a grin. “Am I workin’ on my Tonto?”
Depp’s fans are well-aware of his fondness for infantile humor, and one of his co-stars in “Enemies” told me that between takes in a death scene, »

Mere days ago I passed on the report that Disney was making The Lone Ranger their priority and pushing back Pirates, which wasn't too surprising since Ranger had a director and Pirates didn't. Well, belay all that, because ComingSoon caught up with Jerry Bruckheimer, who assured Jack Sparrow fans that a fourth installment was just around the corner, and suggested that Ranger had stalled out for the moment.
When it comes to the masked man, there's no hunt for a lead, and Bruckheimer & Co. are essentially waiting to hire a director, and for Disney to hit the gas on the whole thing. Despite all reports, Mike Newell is not attached to the chair because he's still hard at work on Prince of Persia -- and frankly, Disney could be waiting to see how that flies before signing him onto another franchise maker.
But Pirates, well, that's a sure thing. "It's »

Clayton Moore and Jay Silverheels as The Lone Ranger and Tonto
I remember watching The Lone Ranger on TV, the classic show that was adapted from George W. Trendle’s classic old-time radio show. I still listen to the replays of the old 1930’s radio show today on Sirius Satellite Radio.
“A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty ‘Hi-yo, Silver!’, The Lone Ranger!“
Oh yea. Those are good memories. Listening to the radio show has its own merits. If you’re a regular long time reader of Screen Rant, then you also know that there are efforts afoot to get a modern day version of The Lone Ranger on the silver screen.
In February of 2008, we told you about Jerry Bruckheimer looking to redo The Lone Ranger. Like we said then, with a Disney backed Bruckheimer behind the lens, The Lone Ranger »

It's been a long time since we had any buzz or movement on The Lone Ranger. For a movie that reunites Jerry Bruckheimer, Johnny Depp, and Pirates' scribes Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott ... it's just kind of sitting there. But that's probably a good thing -- we want them to take their time.
At last though, they might have a director. Production Weekly Tweeted that Mike Newell is "in talks" to direct The Lone Ranger for Disney. Yes, the British director of Four Weddings and a Funeral, High Fidelity, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and perhaps most importantly, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Clearly, Bruckheimer is hiring from within the "family," but let's look at it as a sign that Disney and Bruckheimer might really dig what Newell did with Prince of Persia. (Erik Davis liked what he saw too, for the record.)

After helming "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time", Mike Newell could tackle yet another Jerry Bruckheimer-produced movie, "The Lone Ranger". The possibility was suggested by Production Weekly, which mentioned that the director "is in talks" to direct the big screen adaptation of the popular masked Texas ranger.
Of the report posted on its Twitter page Thursday, April 30, Production Weekly wrote, "Mike Newell is in talks to direct Terry Rossio & Ted Elliott's big screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" at Disney." If Newell is indeed joining the production team of the action adventure movie, the "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" director will once again team up with his "Donnie Brasco" star Johnny Depp, who is set to star as Tonto.
Adapted from George W. Trendle's classic old-time radio and early television show of the same name, "The Lone Ranger" resolves around a masked Texas Ranger who »

Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is in talks to direct the big-budget adaptation of The Lone Ranger, reports Production Weekly. Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the film and Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (Pirates of the Caribbean) are writing the screenplay. The Lone Ranger was a long-running radio and early television show created by George W. Trendle. The title character is a masked Texas Ranger in the American Old West, who gallops about righting injustices with the aid of his clever, laconic American Indian sidekick, Tonto. Departing on his horse Silver, the Ranger would famously say “Hi-yo, Silver, away!” as the horse galloped toward the setting sun. So far the only signed cast member is Johnny Depp, who is slated to play Tonto. Newell and Bruckheimer recently worked together on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, an adaptation of the video game starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Gemma Arterton, »

Some news on Disney's The Lone Ranger, finally! The last time we heard anything about this was last year at a big Disney presentation in Hollywood. There they announced that not only would Johnny Depp be back to play Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 4, but that Depp would also play Tonto in the upcoming Lone Ranger movie. But since then, we haven't heard a peep. Well, according to a Twitter update from Production Weekly, Mike Newell is "in talks" to take the reigns of Lone Ranger. Newell, who previously directed Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, is currently finishing Prince of Persia for Disney. There's not much else we currently know about Disney's version of The Lone Ranger, except that the script was written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio (of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies previously) and it's being produced by Jerry Bruckheimer (so »

Not too long ago, we learned that Jerry Bruckheimer would be doing a big screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" with Pirates Of The Caribbean scribes Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott penning the screenplay, Johnny Depp on board to play Lone Ranger sidekick Tonto and possibly George Clooney playing the famous masked hero. Today comes word via a "Production Weekly" tweet that Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time director Mike Newell is currently in talks to direct the big screen... »

Written by Matt Goldberg According the fast, brief, and usually reliable Twitter feed of Production Weekly, director Mike Newell ("Donnie Brasco", "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") is in talks to direct Jerry Bruckheimer's adaptation of "The Lone Ranger" with the script by Terry Rossio & Ted Elliott (who I really like as screenwriters because I think they write fun movies and have succeeded with unlikely franchises like "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "National Treasure"). Johnny Depp is also on board to star as the Ranger's sidekick, Tonto. While Depp and Newell previously collaborated on "Brasco", I'm indifferent to Newell. I think he's a good, capable director, but he's a journeyman and doesn't really leave his mark anywhere and that's somewhat disheartening because I'd prefer the big budgets to land in the ... »
