Mel Gibson’s breakout film Mad Max was released 45 years ago this week. The film launched the careers of Gibson and director George Miller and opened the global market to Australian New Wave films. The film resulted from a bunch of newcomers coming together to create an independent, dystopian-action film that cost only 400,000 Aud to make. However, the production of the film was extremely dangerous and the crew risked their lives to film several action scenes.

The true breakdown of society appears to have begun in Australia around 1979, when George Miller made this berserk extrapolation of every toxic futurist prediction on the books. Out on the open road the only thing saving society from horrifying motorized gang violence is a corps of equally crazed patrolmen in their interceptor vehicles. With this picture Mel Gibson went from zero to ninety on the star-meters, even though U.S. distribution fell to the failing American International Pictures. Kino gathers up the best existing extras, and includes audio mixes in two separate languages — incomprehensible Australian and marginally understandable Australian. With the non-stop action on screen, who cares?

Witness! Warner Bros. has finally – finally – locked down plans to unveil the monochromatic cut of George Miller’s scintillating action opus, Mad Max: Fury Road. And it’s releasing sooner than you may think.
It’s a version that has seemingly been kicking around for months now, and has surely been one of the most requested cuts of Fury Road following its release. That, and a behind-the-scenes peek at the painstaking work that went in to creating those jaw-dropping action sequences.
If you’re a fan of the film, then you’re in luck, because today also heralds the arrival of what is arguably the best effects showcase of Mad Max: Fury Road to date, shedding light on the ways in which George Miller and his crack team of stunt coordinators orchestrated apocalyptic chaos out on that Fury Road.

The long awaited black and chrome version of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road finally has a release date. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the Mad Max: Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition on December 6th in a two-film collection that also includes the theatrical version of the film. It will also include a special introduction by Miller describing his vision for the film. I'm excited about watching this version of the film because Miller says it's the best version of it. When previously talking about his black and white vision of the film, he said:
"One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The...

Just in time for the release of Fury Road comes Scream Factory’s stellar Mad Max Collector’s Edition Blu-ray of the 1979 original revenge actioner that introduced most of the world to both Australian cinema and a young, rising star, Mel Gibson. Its influences are still being felt over 35 years later and it’s undoubtedly one of the best introductory films from a then-untested George Miller, who proved that even back then, he had an amazing eye for creating fluid action sequences.
Mad Max was Miller and co-writer James McCausland’s response to the growing global concern for a lack of oil after an embargo out of the Middle East in the early 1970’s sent much of the general public into a panic once fuel supplies began running low and prices sky-rocketed everywhere. Realizing the potential for violence under these circumstances, both Miller and McCausland dreamed up a dystopic future...

Fifty Shades of Grey This Blu-ray arrived only a few hours ago and as I type this my wife took it and is currently giving it a rewatch, all despite the fact she didn't even like it. I don't know what to tell you, but such is the way of the world. Personally, I did not enjoy this movie one bit, but I will always recognize Dakota Johnson as she saved all kinds of face and gave a solid performance in a junk movie. However, I should note this one doesn't actually arrive until Friday, so you're going to have to hold out just a little longer. That is unless you want to just buy the streaming version and own it now.
Selma Sean already reviewed the Selma Blu-ray for you (read that here) and gave it high marks, both for the film and for a solid set of bonus features.

Riddick, the latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. This revered Australian trilogy put Mel Gibson on the way to superstardom, and it's worth seeing for the excellent, bone-crunching second slice of Max from 1981. It's a futuristic actioner in which coppers and gangs fight over territory and petrol in a post-apocalyptic landscape. There's minimal dialogue here but this is all about the car chases and David Eggby's excellent cinematography. The first two films (forget the Tina Turner-starring third) are like spaghetti Westerns without the big ideas.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment celebrates the high-definition upgrade of Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome with the release of all three movies in a special set. The trilogy is presented in a tin box with exclusive art developed for the collection. The Blu-rays are housed inside a single case within its collectible cradle.
If you haven't seen the Mad Max movies by now, what are you waiting for? Any fan of action, sci-fi, or post-apocalyptic films will love all the entries in this franchise. You better get educated now before the upcoming video game and new movie, Mad Max: Fury Road, hits theaters and you're left in the dust wondering what all the fuss is about.
The movies can be summed up quite easily. Max (Mel Gibson) is an ex-police officer that gets caught up in other people's problems in a post-apocalyptic world where gas and other everyday commodities have become extremely scarce.

Earlier this week, one of the seminal (and most classic) post-apocalyptic trilogies hit blu-ray in a brand new box set. The Mad Max trilogy comes packaged with all three of the Mel Gibson films on blu-ray (a first for Thunderdome), with a handful of special features to boot. We were fortunate enough to received a copy of the new release and are here to tell you whether or not this collection is worth your hard-earned money.
The Breakdown:
The three films – Mad Max (1979), Mad Max Road Warrior (1982) and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) – are all set in the near-future in Australia. From the very first film, Oscar® winner George Miller (Happy Feet, 2006) proved a master at creating the gritty, bleak dystopian world and staging the incredible car stunts and crashes in the era when stuntmen, not computers, achieved the effects. All three movies starred Mel Gibson, virtually unknown until after the second film,...

I'll admit I'm mildly interested to see what David Twohy and Vin Diesel have come up with for Riddick as Diesel is set to reprise the titular role he first played in Pitch Black and again in the sequel Chronicles of Riddick. Twohy has been keeping people updated on his blog where he recently wrote: Been pulling 14-hour days trying to finish Riddick. My typical day starts at 9am with intensive visual effects meetings, sweating out the details of our 900 VFX shots. Then I jet across town to the mix stage, Soundelux, where I supervise the sound, balancing out the often-competing elements of music, sound fx, sound design, and dialog. At night I hit the lab, Technicolor in Hollywood, staying until midnight to do "Di work" - color-correction of the movie. David Twohy is hard at work finalizing visual effects and sound mixing for the Riddick sequel. Twohy takes some time to release a look at the official logo as well as the first image of Karl Urban as Vaako to further tease your interest.
He says on his official blog:

In the past few weeks, Vin Diesel has treated us to the great first and second images of himself on the set of the upcoming third instalment in the Riddick series, Riddick. Continuing his kind stance of sharing the project with us every step of the way (all of which you can catch up on here), he’s treated us to the third image from the set, and it’s a great one.
Giving us a close-up of his face, we can see him wearing his trademark goggles from the first two films, Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, lying close to the ground, and looking pretty roughed up.

Universal Pictures, One Race Films and Radar Pictures announced today that principal photography has begun on the action-driven, sci-fi thriller Riddick. The shoot will take place in Montreal.
The latest chapter of the groundbreaking saga that began with 2000′s hit sci-fi film Pitch Black and 2004′s The Chronicles of Riddick reunites writer/director David Twohy (A Perfect Getaway, The Fugitive) and star Vin Diesel (the Fast and Furious franchise, xXx). Diesel reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty hunter in the known galaxy.
The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

Warner Bros. have just sent us this new fantastic gallery of images from their new movie. Ironclad. We were lucky enough to interview James Purfoy for the movie yesterday and that should be going up on the site in the coming days.
Ironclad is out in the UK on March 4th; it is a bloody medieval action film starring Brian Cox (Bourne Supremacy), Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version and Shoot Em Up), James Purefoy (Resident Evil), Mackenzie Crook (Pirates), Charles Dance (Gosford Park), Jason Flemyng (Kick Ass and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and Iron Man 2’s Kate Mara to name a couple.
Synopsis: Travelling back to the dark, brutal past of 13-century England, Ironclad plunges us headlong into one of the most violent, pivotal moments in English medieval history – when a few good men fought against insurmountable odds to defend their country from a megalomaniac, blood-drunk king.

Ironclad recounts one of the most violent, pivotal moments in English medieval history – when a few good men fought against insurmountable odds to defend their country from a megalomaniac, blood-drunk king. Torn from the pages of history, the devastating battle for the castle of Rochester is a true story of honour, action and excitement. There will be blood.
The year is 1215. King John (Paul Giamatti) has been forced to sign the Magna Carta, a document that will ensure the freedom of men and form the basis of common law in England. Furious at having been forced to sign it, King John raises...
