John Kander may be close to 100 years old, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t involved with the upcoming film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
Kander and the late lyricist Fred Ebb – known collectively as Kander and Ebb – composed the music and wrote the songs for the original 1993 Tony-winning Broadway production of “Kiss of the Spider Woman.”
The upcoming film, directed by Bill Condon, stars Jennifer Lopez, Diego Luna and newcomer Tonatiuh.
“John Kander, who is 97 years old, was in the studio with me,” Lopez told me Monday at the premiere of her new Netflix sci-fi action movie, “Atlas.” “He is the most beautiful man. He was there for all of our recordings of the album and the pre-records for the movie. It was a dream.”
Lopez said Kander only had “very small notes” on her performance. “I was shocked,” she said.

A new musical, a musical revival and a new play with music will dominate the 2024 Tony Awards nominations, according to our official odds in 17 of the 26 categories. The latest revival of the classic John Kander and Fred Ebb musical “Cabaret,” fresh off a smash run on the West End, and the new musical “Hell’s Kitchen” that is loosely based on the life of Alicia Keys and her music will both net at least seven nominations. New works “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Here Lies Love” and “Suffs” and the starry revival of Stephen Sondheim‘s notorious flop “Merrily We Roll Along” will also earn substantial nominations tallies.
Playwright David Adjmi‘s “Stereophonic” will lead this year’s crop of plays and play revivals with at least five nominations. Right behind are five other works – two new shows and three revivals – that will all tie at least four nominations apiece,...

Life’s not all a cabaret for film actors making their way to Broadway.
In the case of Eddie Redmayne, who now stars as the ghoul-like and flamboyant Emcee in director Rebecca Frecknall’s “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club” at New York’s August Wilson Theatre, life behind the scenes is more “monastic,” as he told IndieWire, than song-and-dance bacchanalia.
“When you’re doing a musical like this, it’s quite monastic living, and it’s almost more like being an athlete than an actor sometimes because when you’re doing eight shows a week, you’re keeping your voice in decent nick,” said Redmayne, Zooming from the backseat of a car between appointments, which just included lunch with Joel Grey, who famously starred as the Master of Ceremonies in Bob Fosse‘s Oscar-winning 1972 film.

Chita Rivera, the beloved Broadway star of West Side Story, Chicago and Kiss of the Spider Woman, died today in New York following a brief illness. She was 91.
Her death was announced by her daughter, Lisa Mordente, who said that Rivera died peacefully.
One of America’s foremost Latina artists, Rivera was a groundbreaker, riveting critics and audiences alike with seminal performances of such soon-to-be Broadway standards as “America” and “A Boy Like That” from West Side Story and “All That Jazz” from Chicago. She was among the most nominated performers in Tony Award history – she earned 10 nominations, winning twice (for The Rink and Kiss of the Spider Woman) and receiving the 2018 Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Rivera rocketed to fame in 1953 with Guys and Dolls, then cemented her stature as a Broadway leading lady in 1954 with Can-Can, Mr. Wonderful in 1956 and, in 1957, the role that...

François Ozon’s fizzy comedy The Crime Is Mine, a loose adaptation of Georges Berr and Louis Verneuil’s 1934 play Mon crime, begins with murder, poverty, and a suicide threat. But the film delivers this material with such a bubbly optimism that it wouldn’t be a surprise if the cast broke into a choreographed number from Gold Diggers of 1933.
Set in 1935 Paris, the film follows two best friends fending off criminal charges, eviction, and professional failure. Struggling actress Madeleine (Nadia Tereszkiewicz) flees the casting couch of producer Montferrand (Jean-Christophe Bouvet) only to discover that he was later murdered and that she’s the prime suspect. Her roommate, Pauline (Rebecca Marder), a struggling lawyer, offers to defend her. Given the media’s hyperventilating coverage of other accused female killers, Madeleine figures that a splashy trial could help her and Pauline’s careers. Madeleine then falsely confesses to shooting Montferrand and takes Pauline as her lawyer,...

Set in an Argentinian prison in 1981. Lopez is to play the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina, a gay hairdresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva, including the role of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina’s life is upended when a Marxist, Valentin Arregui Paz, is brought into his cell, and the two form an unlikely bond.
Based on the novel by Manuel Puig and the book of the musical by Terrence McNally, Condon has written to script for the big screen as well as directing. John Kander and Fred Ebb will provide the music.

As long expected, London’s hit immersive staging of the beloved Kander & Ebb classic Cabaret starring Eddie Redmayne as the emcee will move to Broadway this spring, with Gayle Rankin taking the role of Sally Bowles.
Previews will begin April 1, 2024, at the August Wilson Theatre, with an official opening night of April 21. An opening gala is set for April 20. The musical features music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and a book by Joe Masteroff.
Director of the London production, Rebecca Frecknall, will do the same for Broadway, as will designer Tom Scutt. Said director Frecknall, “Cabaret is a masterpiece of writing which continues to reveal its richness to us.

Hulu’s acclaimed “Only Murders in the Building,” currently vying for 11 Emmys, has gone all razzle dazzle in its third season. Make that rattle dazzle! Beleaguered Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) was hoping for a comeback on the Great White Way with the mystery thriller “Death Rattle.” But when his leading man (Paul Rudd) is murdered, he decides to turn the straight play into a musical, “Death Rattle Dazzle!” And in the third episode, Meryl Streep’s nervous journeyman actress and Ashley Park’s leading lady performed the show-stopping ballad “Look for the Light” co-written by Sara Bareilles. One almost forgot the prime suspects in “Death Rattle Dazzle!” are the infant Pickwick triplets.

The Olivier Award-winning West End revival of Cabaret is coming to Broadway: Producers announced that the acclaimed musical will begin previews at the August Wilson Theater in spring 2024.
Not confirmed: Whether the West End production’s original 2021 stars Eddie Redmayne (as the Emcee) or Jessie Buckley (as Sally Bowles) will make the move. Redmayne’s participation, in particular, has been widely speculated, prompted in part by his participation in this year’s Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey, who played the Emcee in the original Broadway production as well as the 1972 movie version.
The West End revival – officially titled Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club – swept the 2022 Olivier Awards with seven wins including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical (Redmayne and Buckley), and Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall). Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical awards went to Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy.

The Olivier Award-winning revival of Cabaret is headed to Broadway.
A new production of the musical, which originated on the West End in November 2021, will play Broadway’s August Wilson Theatre in spring 2024.
Few other details have been announced, including the Broadway casting. Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley starred in the lead roles of the Emcee and Sally Bowles at the start of the run in London and both won Olivier Awards for their portrayals. Cabaret won the 2022 Olivier for best musical revival, with Rebecca Frecknall winning for best director.
The musical, which features a score by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and a book by Joe Masteroff, centers on a seedy night club in pre-World War II Berlin, overseen by the mysterious, all-knowing Emcee. The one and only Chita Rivera answers the phone at her home in New York, but she sounds an early warning: we could be joined at any moment by a third party. That would be Dolores, the hell-raising alter ego of the 90-year-old Broadway megastar, who makes a series of arresting interventions in Rivera’s new memoir. “It’s Chita right now,” she says with a sly chuckle. “But Dolores could pop in at any second.”
Dolores, Rivera’s birth name, is what her mother called her whenever she caused trouble. When Rivera was in rehearsals for West Side Story in 1957, she began to use the D-word to distinguish her gutsy, unpredictable side, in contrast to the...

Broadway and film star Joel Grey and John Kander, composer of Cabaret, Chicago and more, will receive the 2023 Special Tony Awards for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.
Grey was the original Amos Hart in the 1996 Chicago and the original Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway, for which he won a Tony Award. He later received an Academy Award, Golden Globe and BAFTA for his performance in the film adaptation. Kander, who co-wrote those legendary musicals with the late lyricist Fred Ebb, is currently represented on Broadway with the musical New York, New York.
“We are immensely thrilled to honor two legends in their own rights. John Kander has composed the soundtrack to all of our lives – meeting us in every decade – creating unforgettable scores for Cabaret, Chicago, Kiss of the Spider Woman, and his current Broadway hit New York, New York,” said Charlotte St. Martin, president of the Broadway League.

Another busy Broadway season has drawn to a close and Tony nominations are just days away. David Buchanan joins me in a rousing slugfest to sift through what musicals will be remembered at the 2023 Tony Awards. The sheer volume of quality productions and striking performances in contention makes for exciting races that are challenging to predict. Watch our full video slugfest above.
We begin by examining the potential nominees for Best Musical, which is possibly the only straightforward race in this discussion. David and I are certain that “Kimberly Akimbo,” “Some Like it Hot,” “& Juliet,” and “Shucked” should feel secure about their impending nominations. But that final spot is totally “up for grabs.”
I’m fairly certain that the “grandness” of “New York, New York,” with its lush design elements and swoon-worthy dancing, will help the show attain a spot in the lineup. Plus, the show should benefit from the...

Imagine a New York where construction workers tap dance on steel girders high above the city, sorta like that famous photograph you’ve seen a million times, and where kindly landladies who once played Carnegie Hall might tutor a young Holocaust refugee to a Julliard scholarship, and breezy jam sessions do away with generations of friction between races, genders and sexual identities. You’d go there, right?
Well, you can. New York, New York, the new(ish) Kander & Ebb musical, opens tonight at Broadway’s St. James Theatre. But be warned: Even the rosiest-hued urban utopia can get a bit tiresome when it’s this overstuffed with good intentions.
Inspired, at least in name, by Martin Scorsese’s 1977 movie starring Robert De Niro and Liza Minnelli, New York, New York is less an adaptation than it is a John Kander & Fred Ebb jukebox musical: In addition to the two very...

The Outer Critics Circle (Occ), the official organization of writers on New York theatre for out-of-town newspapers and national publications, today announced the nominees for the 72nd Annual Outer Critics Circle Awards, honoring the 2022-2023 Broadway and Off-Broadway season.
“New York, New York” received a major backing from this announcement, which coincides with the production’s opening night. The new musical with songs from John Kander, the late Fred Ebb and Lin-Manuel Miranda earned a whopping 12 nominations, the most of any production. “Some Like it Hot” trails just behind it with 10 nominations. The most nominated plays of the season are the Off-Broadway sensation “Downstate” and Broadway epic “Leopoldstadt,” both with six nominations apiece.
This is the first season with newly reconstructed acting categories, which have removed gender specifications, and have been expanded to separately include off-Broadway performers. In the previous configuration, actors in Broadway and off-Broadway productions competed in the same category.

“I’m a nerd first,” Colton Ryan quickly points out. In that sense, the actor is having the time of his life on his two recent projects which have connected him with legends in the industry. Ryan recently worked with auteur director Rian Johnson on the hit Peacock series “Poker Face.” He also currently stars in the new Broadway musical “New York, New York,” where he is directed by Susan Stroman while singing tunes by theater icons John Kander and the late Fred Ebb (with an assist from Lin-Manuel Miranda). “From my nerd perspective I’m just elated that I’m even associated with any of these songs,” admits Ryan. At the conclusion of Apple TV +’s delightful 2021 musical comedy “Schmigadoon!,” Melissa (Cecily Strong) and Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) realized they loved each other and returned to the real world. The second season finds them blissfully married, but boredom soon sets in. And to add insult to injury, they can’t get pregnant. The two decide they need a boost, so they decide to return to the cotton-candy colored tuneful world of Schmigadoon.
But what they find this time around is Schmicago, a much darker town they can’t leave until they find their happy ending. Happy endings, though, are few and far between in the city that never sleeps. And it certainly looks like the two won’t find one anytime soon after Josh is soon arrested for murdering a showgirl.
Schmicago is Fosse-fied with more than a few jazz hands reflecting the adult musicals of the 1960s and 1970s including “Chicago,...

“You can never return to Schmigadoon,” rasps Tituss Burgess in a new “Schmigadoon!” Season 2 trailer. “Welcome to Schmicago!” The new “first look” trailer from Apple TV+ then drops viewers into a darker, sexier musical pastiche than the candy-coated first season. Watch the full video above and then read on to dive into the smorgasbord of Broadway references hidden in this exciting sneak peek.
“As the high of Schmigadoon starts to wear off, the realities of life start to set in,” reveals Cecily Strong during a behind-the-scenes interview. It seems that the spark of romance her character Melissa experienced with Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) has begun to dissipate after leaving the world of Golden Age musicals. Josh has the idea to return to Schmigadoon in order to reignite their romance and sense of fun, but the couple is instead transported to a town inspired by musicals from the 1960s and 70s.

Even if musical theater or movie musicals aren't your thing, there's a high probability that you're familiar with the "Cell Block Tango" from "Chicago." The memorable piece was composed by John Kander with lyrics written by Fred Ebb, and tells the story of six different women at the Cook County Jail women's annex who explain what landed them in jail, and why their now deceased significant others "had it coming." Each woman feels justified (or not guilty) in committing their crimes, with each suspect identified with a trademark word uttered throughout the song: "Pop! Six! Squish! Uh-uh! Cicero! Lipschitz!"
When "Chicago" first arrived on Broadway, it was directed and co-written by the legendary Bob Fosse, and the Academy Award-winning film from Rob Marshall brilliantly captured the essence of Fosse's legacy and made a killing at the box office in the process. Marshall was careful not to make a carbon copy of the stage production,...

The most fun moments of watching the Oscars are always the surprises.
The unexpected wins from dark horses are always so much more thrilling than predictable outcomes.
It's not that the winners were undeserving -- it's often that their wins seemed to come out of nowhere.
With prognosticators having Oscar predictions down to a science, anything remotely surprising is a rare treat.
Here are some of the most shocking wins that left us with our jaws on the floor!
Adrien Brody (Best Actor In A Leading Role) in The Pianist
Brody was the only Oscar-less member of his cohort when he won for his role as Holocaust survivor Władysław Szpilman.
Up against Jack Nicholson, Nicolas Cage, Michael Caine, and Daniel Day-Lewis, Brody's win made him the youngest Best Actor in the history of the Oscars, at age 29.
Unfortunately, his behavior is what most people remember about his win -- when...

Exclusive: Life is literally a Cabaret for Aimee Lou Wood, star of Netflix comedy Sex Education and awards season movie Living, who is rehearsing to make her West End musical debut as Sally Bowles in the radical revival of the classic show by John Kander and Fred Ebb.
Wood joins John McCrea, who was the original Jamie in Everybody’s Talking About Jamie at The Sheffield Crucible and in London, and is taking on the role of the Emcee.

Wood says that she suffered from stage fright when she was a kid — “shyness and fear” stopped her from performing. “I couldn’t get up and sing in front of anyone,” she recalls. That was until she hit 16 and picked Maybe This Time, a number from Cabaret, to perform during...

Musicals have been an absolute staple of Hollywood pretty much ever since people started selling tickets to watch moving pictures on a large screen. But, like every other tried and true genre in filmmaking, it has had its ups and downs. There was, at one point, a tremendously long down period for musicals, roughly from the '70s up through the early 2000s, where several other trends dominated multiplexes, leaving song and dance pictures largely out in the cold.
Be that as it may, everything seems to come back around again eventually. For musicals, that happened 20 years ago when Rob Marshall made his feature directorial debut. Marshall is the man who brought the long-running stage musical "Chicago" to the big screen, and...

You know what they say about Broadway: If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.
Tony winner Lin-Manuel Miranda is set to be adapting a musical loosely inspired by Martin Scorsese’s beloved 1977 movie musical “New York, New York” for Broadway, set for a March 2023 release. The official opening night will be in April 2023, and Tony winner Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph the musical.
The Scorsese film starred Liza Minnelli as a lounge singer who falls for a saxophonist, played by Robert De Niro. Their romance gives way to their respective ambitions and dreams of music stardom against the backdrop of the Big Apple in the 1940s.
However, the same characters will not be appearing in the new iteration. Deadline reported the Broadway production will “feature little of Scorsese’s storyline” from the film. Yet the setting remains the same: post-war 1946 in Manhattan as the city recovers.

“The Book of Mormon” won nine of its 14 bids at the 2011 Tony Awards. This smash hit tuner from “South Park” creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone about the misadventures of two Mormon missionaries in Africa won Best Musical, Director Score, Book, Orchestrations, Lighting Design, Scenic Design and Sound Design.
While “The Book of Mormon” fell shy of the record dozen Tonys taken home by “The Producers” in 2001, Parker tied the achievement of Joshua Logan (“South Pacific”) with four wins in one night as a producer, director, librettist and lyricist.
Parker and his creative partner Matt Stone have shared in five Emmy Awards for Best Animated Series for the long-running Comedy Central hit “South Park.” Along with “Avenue Q” Tony champ Robert Lopez, they picked up the prizes for Best Book and Best Score. And with Casey Nicholaw, Parker shared in the win for Best Musical Director.

Bobby, bubi, we need to talk about the Tony Awards! This season’s revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s landmark musical “Company” earned nine nominations, the highest for any musical revival of the year and the fourth largest tally of any show. It earned citations for Best Revival, three for performers Matt Doyle, Patti LuPone, and Jennifer Simard, Best Director for Marianne Elliott, and four others.
Glaringly absent from this well-deserved list, though, is star Katrina Lenk, who plays the musical’s central character Bobbie; Elliott has reimagined the piece with a woman at the fore. If this snub seems egregious, it’s one that productions of “Company” past have had to contend with before.

Just as Bobby and Bobbie are notoriously unlucky in love, the character has never been particularly lucky with Tony nominators, dating way back to 1971. The very...

Minnelli brings the razzle dazzle to a Berlin determined to ignore the gathering storm in this cinematic masterpiece
‘Still think you can control them?” Dizzied by their divinely decadent menage à trois in Weimar Berlin, cabaret singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), shy scholar Brian Roberts (Michael York) and suave aristocrat Baron von Heune (Helmut Griem) linger in a beer garden to watch a creepy blond boy singing Tomorrow Belongs to Me with the entire crowd ecstatically joining in – a satanically catchy and authentic-sounding Nazi marching song, brilliantly pastiched by Cabaret’s writer and composer, John Kander and Fred Ebb. It is a sensational moment in this addictive movie, based on the stage show Cabaret and Christopher Isherwood’s original stories about prewar Berlin, uniquely choreographed and directed by Bob Fosse and rereleased now for its 50th anniversary.
Maybe its views on gender fluidity and consent are confrontationally tactless in 2022 compared...

The foundation created by Cabaret lyricist Fred Ebb has awarded a record-setting $2.6 million to Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The gift is the single largest in Broadway Cares history.
The year-end 2021 gift from The Fred Ebb Foundation, shepherded by Ebb’s nephew Mitchell S. Bernard, will kick off Broadway Cares’ continuing national grant-making in 2022. The gift was put to immediate use by providing $1.5 million to The Actors Fund.
“Fred and Mitch give us the means and ability to respond with strength and reach those struggling in our theater community as well as in communities across the nation in the hope that a brighter tomorrow belongs to us all,” said Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Executive Director Tom Viola in a statement.
Ebb, who died in 2004, declared in his will that royalties earned on his works would be distributed each year to Broadway Cares through the Fred Ebb Foundation. An initial...

As a new staging of Cabaret starring Eddie Redmayne and Jessie Buckley opens in London, director Rebecca Frecknall and 94-year-old composer John Kander, the only survivor of the original creative team, swap stories
John Kander peers over the top of his glasses and smiles broadly. “What are you most scared about? Was there any moment when your heart sank?” he asks, kindly. Rebecca Frecknall grins back. “We’re most scared about 600 people coming to see it,” she says. “There are just so many unknowns.”
The pair are thousands of miles apart – one in upstate New York, the other in London - and they are talking via Zoom. But the tie that binds them overcomes distance and space. Composer Kander, with his late, long-time professional partner, the lyricist Fred Ebb, created Cabaret, the show that invented the concept musical. Frecknall is currently directing a starry new production (previews have just started...
