“Early Dirty”
By Raymond Benson
The filmmaker who made the iconic Clint Eastwood vehicle, Dirty Harry in 1971 also made something of an early test-run three years earlier in the form of a crime picture called Madigan. Starring Richard Widmark as a tough, cynical, and world-weary police detective in New York City, Madigan displays the same look, feel, and grit that the later Eastwood police procedural exhibits. And, like Harry Callahan, Dan Madigan doesn’t always follow the rules.
Don Siegel had been a solid craftsman since the 1950s, responsible for such works as Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954), the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), the admirable remake of The Killers (1964), and Coogan’s Bluff (1968). Likewise, Madigan is a well-made thriller with a hard-boiled plot and realistic characters portrayed by an excellent cast that includes Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens, and James Whitmore.

Manhattan detective Richard Widmark is up the creek without his .38 special — a maniac killer has stolen it. He’s desperate to get it back, while his personal and professional problems pile up. Henry Fonda, Inger Stevens and Harry Guardino give sterling performances, but the assured direction of Don Siegel is what keeps us on edge throughout. The classic crime saga pushed the limits of the incoming Ratings System — yet provided a style template for a decade of Universal cop shows. Siegel utilizes blunt jarring cutting effects to make its violence feel extra-intense — and for warped screen villainy, Steve Ihnat’s Barney Benesch has no equal — he has less than three minutes of screen time, but you’ll never forget him.

The long Emmy campaign takes a bit of a breather next week, after nomination voting ends on Monday at 10 p.m. We won’t know until July 16 how much all the Fyc events, stunts, mailers and coverage paid off, but it’s already been a raucous campaign season — including bigger-than-ever installations from the likes of Netflix and Amazon; one final hurrah for the soon-to-be outlawed DVD screeners; last minute contenders that slid in right under the eligibility window; and an 11th hour mini-scandal involving allegations of “block voting” schemes.
As nominations and phase two of the Emmy campaign gets underway next month, we’re also waiting to see whether this year’s Primetime Emmy telecast on Fox goes host-free; whether “Veep” and “Game of Thrones” are still this year’s frontrunners; and which names Ken Jeong and D’Arcy Carden actually announce on nomination morning.

Secure one major book with a serious subject, sign up a wagonload of stars (including a legend or two) and make sure every cookie-cutter character repeatedly explains themselves to the camera in close-up. That formula worked well for Stanley Kramer in 1965; his film hasn’t much of a reputation but the cast is gold. A bright new transfer makes the picture look very good.

Vivien Leigh: Legendary ‘Gone with the Wind’ and ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’ star would have turned 100 today Vivien Leigh was perhaps the greatest film star that hardly ever was. What I mean is that following her starring role in the 1939 Civil War blockbuster Gone with the Wind, Leigh was featured in a mere eight* movies over the course of the next 25 years. The theater world’s gain — she was kept busy on the London stage — was the film world’s loss. But even if Leigh had starred in only two movies — Gone with the Wind and A Streetcar Named Desire — that would have been enough to make her a screen legend; one who would have turned 100 years old today, November 5, 2013. (Photo: Vivien Leigh ca. 1940.) Vivien Leigh (born Vivian Mary Hartley to British parents in Darjeeling, India) began her film career in the mid-’30s, playing bit roles in British...

"Ship of Fools" is a great movie with a brilliant cast, including Simone Signoret, Michael Dunn, Elizabeth Ashley, George Segal, José Ferrer, and Oskar Werner, and directed by Stanley Kramer. But it is Lee Marvin's performance as a drunken, failed baseball player that is most vivid, specifically in a scene with Vivien Leigh. In her final film, she plays an elegant British woman who tries to get Marvin's character into bed as they drink—and as he remains oblivious to her advances. Both actors are extraordinary, and it's almost impossible to talk about him in that scene without talking about her. It's the interplay between them. Still, I most remember the way Marvin captured the sensibility of a tormented, self-pitying, over-the-hill baseball player, who was not very good even in his prime. There was tremendous pathos in his performance. Equally impressive was the way he got the baseball lingo down pat.

Joseph Losey's Boom! Review Pt. I That evening, the Witch is seen roaming around at night howling "Sissy! Sissy!" He ends up in Chris' bedroom, pleading that Chris go home with him to Capri. The Witch then collapses on the bed. At that point, it's Chris' turn to wander around. He ends up in Miss Black's bedroom. When he leaves, he is confronted by a sadistic guard (Michael Dunn). Chris is threatened with another dog attack, but Miss Black rescues him. Soon, Sissy warms up to Chris. They begin to spout poetry to each other and suddenly become "Liz and Dick," but with a slight twist: The famous twosome becomes a trio when the Witch gets a crush on Chris and tries to put the make on him. Sissy sends the Witch packing fast. Once the Witch is out of the way, Sissy dons her see-through nightie explaining, "If...

Boom! (1968) Direction: Joseph Losey Screenplay: Tennessee Williams; from his play The Milk Train Doesn't Stop Here Anymore Cast: Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Noel Coward, Joanna Shimkus, Michael Dunn, Romolo Valli Elizabeth Taylor, Boom! If you've never seen Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's 1968 vanity production Boom!, don't feel singled out. Boom! bombed at the box office almost as soon as it blasted on the screen. At times, a movie is art imitating life imitating art. Directed by Joseph Losey from a screenplay by Tennessee Williams, Boom! is a good example; one that deserves to be described in detail. Elizabeth Taylor plays Flora "Sissy" Goforth, who has isolated herself on her own island on the Tyrrhenian Sea, where she has frequent temper tantrums and bronchial attacks. Sissy is a middle-aged, sexually repressed, much-widowed American who may — or may not — have murdered her husbands. The opening scene shows Sissy in bed, [...]...

Character actress Zelda Rubinstein was best known for her role in the 1982 horror film Poltergeist. She starred as psychic Tangina Barrons, who’s small stature and childlike voice added more chills to the 1982 horror film about demonic forces at a suburban home. She reprised her role in the two sequels Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) and Poltergeist III (1988).
Rubinstein was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on May 28, 1933. She worked as a medical technician, before embarking upon an acting career in the early 1980s. the 4′3″ actress was cast in the 1981 film Under the Rainbow, and she became an outspoken critic of the way little people portraying Munchkins in the film were depicted. She soon formed the Michael Dunn Memorial Repertory Theater Company in Los Angeles to give acting opportunities to other little people.
Though of small size, she also made a large impression in the films Anguish (1987), Teen Witch (1989), Guilty as Charged...
