The return of “Yo! MTV Raps” now has a premiere date.
The reimagined global iteration of the MTV hip-hop series will premiere on Paramount+ on Tuesday, May 24, the streamer announced Monday. In addition, Paramount+ released the official trailer, key art and lineup of featured guests.
Produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, “Yo! MTV Raps” is a comprehensive deep dive into the current state of hip hop. “Yo! MTV Raps” was created by Peter Dougherty and Ted Demme, and launched in 1988 — originally hosted by Fab 5 Freddy, and later by Doctor Dre and Ed Lover. The series ran until 1995.
The new iteration of the show will feature hosted segments from Conceited and DJ Diamond Kuts, live performances, cyphers and lifestyle content. Featured guests include Freddie Gibbs on May 24, Latto on May 31, Saba on June 7, Jid on June 14, Shenseea on June 21, Tee Grizzley on June 28, Idk on July 5 and Trina on July 12.

Peter Dougherty, a TV executive credited with bringing hip-hop to MTV as the co-creator of Yo! MTV Raps, passed away October 12th following a heart attack at his home in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, The New York Times reports. Dougherty was 59.

Following a 16-year hiatus, MTV's iconic show "Yo! MTV Raps" will make its return to the airwaves during a special dubbed, "Yo! MTV Raps Classic Cuts." The 30-minute retrospective will feature an array of MCs including Tribe Called Quest, Scarface, Ice Cube, Wiz Khalifa, Questlove, Busta Rhymes, Naughty By Nature and Young Jeezy, all reminiscing on three influential videos ["Scenario" by A Tribe Called Quest, "My Mind's Playing Tricks on Me" by Geto Boys and Ice Cube's "It Was a Good Day"].
"The concept is actually every episode, hoping that it gets picked up as a series," said writer and consultant Shaheem Reid. "We're going to be looking back at some of the classic videos from the 'Yo! MTV Raps' era. We have brand new interviews with the artists about the making of the song and the making of the video, and then we're also going to incorporate the interviews with some of the artists of today talking about the impact of all of those songs and videos."
