Filmmaker Elegance Bratton, a Marine Corps veteran and Sundance Film Festival alum, is set to direct the documentary “Hellfighters.” The film chronicles the life of James Reese Europe, an African American jazz pioneer who served as a lieutenant during World War I in the Black military unit known as the Harlem Hellfighters.
“As a veteran and artist like James Reese Europe, I immediately knew I wanted to tell his story,” Bratton said. “WWI was driven by Europe’s desire for control of Africa — there is a cruel irony in that the Hellfighters believed the only way to gain full meaning of U.S. citizenship was to sacrifice their lives for an America consumed with their own degradation.”
“Hellfighters” explores the legacies of Europe and his fellow bandmate and collaborator, composer Noble Sissle. Europe’s father was a formerly enslaved man and employee of the IRS; his mother was a teacher.

The postponement of the Cannes Film Festival from mid-May to the end of June has elicited a mix of sadness and skepticism among international film executives.
The festival’s decision Thursday evening to delay this year’s edition from its originally scheduled dates of May 12-23 to an as yet undetermined period between June and July was not surprising, given the event’s vulnerability to the rampant outbreak of coronavirus in Europe.
“It was the logical step to take,” says prominent Spanish producer and distributor Antonio Saura, “and I’m very glad they made it now, and didn’t wait until mid-April (as organizers had previously said).”
The executive, who says the postponement is “bad news” for independents that do “half their business” in Cannes, notes he has been “preparing” for such an eventuality due to the pandemic’s aggressive spread.

India’s Alliance Media & Entertainment is in the process of acquiring a library of works by late Iranian auteur Abbas Kiarostami for distribution in the Indian subcontinent from France’s MK2 Films.
The deal covers 33 features, documentaries and shorts from Kiarostami’s oeuvre, including “Taste of Cherry,” “The Wind Will Carry Us” and “Where Is My Friend’s Home.” Negotiations took place at the European Film Market, and the Berlin Film Festival. They are at an “advanced state of closure” and the signing is expected to take place imminently, Alliance’s Sunil Doshi told Variety. Kiarostami died in 2016.

An adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore’s, Kabuliwala, Bioscopewala is filmed through a new lens. Everyone has an incomplete story! Bioscopewala is a hard-hitting journey of Minnie Basu in a fight to complete her story. What’s your story? Will she complete her story? How will it end?
Bioscopewala starring Danny Denzongpa, Geetanjali Thapa, Tisca Chopra and Adil Hussain is directed by Deb Medhekarand produced by Sunil Doshi.
Kabuliwala is a Bengali short story written by Rabindranath Tagore in 1892. The story is of a Pashtun merchant from Kabul, who comes to Calcutta (present day Kolkata), India each year for selling dry-fruits and while living in India he becomes friends with a five-year-old girl Mini from a middle-class aristocratic family as she reminds him of his daughter who lives in Kabul.
Bioscopewala extends the story from where Tagore’s Kabuliwala ends. In this extrapolation, Kabuliwala shows films to children in Kolkata on his bioscope.

Film Bazaar: Films in rare languages, mockumentaries and a growing interest in genre filmmaking are some of the dominant themes in this year’s Film Bazaar Recommends.
Among the line-up are films such as The Gold Laden Sheep & The Sacred Mountain filmed in the Pahari language, spoken in the Himalayas, and The Golden Wing (Sonar Baran Pakhi) made in Rajbanshi, which is spoken in the northeast Indian state of Assam.
“The northeast of India and the lives of the people in the mountains seems to inspire directors from this region, as well as other parts of India, perhaps because the landscape is so cinematic,” says Film Bazaar Recommends and Wip Lab curator Deepti DCunha.
This year’s line-up also includes The Bioscopewala, loosely based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story Kabuliwala, which is partly shot in the Dari language, spoken in Afghanistan. Produced by Mumbai-based Sunil Doshi, the film stars Danny Denzongpa, Gitanjali Thapa, Tisca Chopra...

When I landed at the theatre around noon, only Wrecked by Michael Greenspan had seats left. Adrien Brody finds himself a victim of a car crash in a dark, foreboding jungle. I felt it was too contrived, did not have enough punch, enough drama, enough, well, Deliverance.
The film ended quickly enough letting me attend a discussion on Independent Cinema. Speakers: Ian Bernie, Aijaz Khan, Sunil Doshi and Madhu Mantena moderated by Meenakshi Shedde. Sunil Doshi turned out to be the best speaker, giving out advice from the Pov of a solid, experienced businessman.
Walked into the theatre that was to play Girish Kasaravalli’s Ghatashraddha. They were testing the DVD. Left immediately. If it was going to be a blown up DVD and not the original print, it did not make much sense; I can catch the film on DVD anytime. The neighboring screen had John Stockwell’s The...

Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee’s budget announcement would help the emerging world cinema sector in India. The FM’s announcement to exempt license fee paid on film import from custom duty could result in a saving of 15-20% on content acquisition cost for two world cinema channels, Utv World Movies and Ndtv Lumiere and home video distributors.
In his budget speech for the financial year 2010-11, delivered in the parliament on Friday, Mr. Mukherjee announced that “The film industry has been experiencing difficulties in importing digital masters of films for duplication or distribution loaded on electronic medium vis-a-vis those imported on cinematographic film, owing to a differential customs duty structure. I propose to rationalise this by charging customs duty only on the value of the carrier medium. The same dispensation would apply to music and gaming software imported for duplication. In keeping with the tradition of Indian cinema, however,...

International Youth Day seemed to be the day to make the simple announcement of the release of the Aamras, a slice-of-life film, produced by Sunil Doshi (of Bheja Fry fame) and directed by Rupali Guha, daughter of veteran filmmaker Basu Chatterjee.
Says director Rupali Guha, "Aamras is a coming of age youth film about friendship among four 17-18 year old urban school girls, Jiya, Pari, Rakhi, and Sanya. Showcasing the ups and downs of friendship, Aamras will make one remember what it was like to have friends when you were 17 and glad that they were there when they were."
Anchal Saberwal, Maanvi Gagroo, Natasha Bhardwaj and Vega Tamotia, the lead girls seemed to be at home at Naarad Bungalow as they laughed and giggled and sipped Aamras, giving meaning to the title of the film. The girls surely had a ball of a time. "It's this splendid off-screen chemistry that...

Sunil Doshi, who has in the past produced some interesting films such as Navarasa, Mixed Doubles and Bheja Fry, is now entering a new territory namely animation films. But unlike producing its own animation films, Sunil's company, Alliance Media, has gone ahead and acquired a catalogue of 11 animation titles from Japan's biggest production house Studio Ghibli, created by Hayao Miyazaki. The films will be marketed under the brand name 'Junior' and will include comics, live action films, animation films, games and television shows catering to the age-group of 6 to 18 years. Some of the films which are a part of the catalogue acquired by Alliance Media includes My Neighbour Totoro, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso and Whisper of the heart. For the uninitiated, Studio Ghibli-Japan's premier animation studio was founded in 1985 by two of animation's greatest creators Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Princess Mononoke and Academy Award Winner Spirited Away are some...

NEW DELHI -- New Delhi Television capped a busy week Thursday, taking the wraps off NDTV Lumiere, a nationwide project that will see films from around the world offered to Indian viewers via platforms including theatrical, home video, the Internet and a dedicated channel set to bow around April.
Lumiere is being launched by NDTV Imagine, a division of New Delhi Television. Earlier this week, NBC Universal acquired a 26% stake in NDTV for $150 million (HR 1/23).
NDTV Lumiere is a three-way partnership between NDTV Imagine (51%), Manmohan Shetty (29%), founder of Mumbai-based film processing, and exhibition company Adlabs Films and Sunil Doshi (20%), NDTV Imagine CEO Sameer Nair told The Hollywood Reporter.
"The start-up capital for this venture is between $5 million and $6 million," Nair said, adding that the venture "already has a catalog of 300 titles featuring the best of contemporary European and international cinema."
Titles include British Indian director Asif Kapadia's "Far North", Lebanese actress-director Nadine Labaki's directorial debut "Sukkar Banat" (Caramel) and Danish director Billie August's 2007 Berlin festival Peace Prize winner "Goodbye Bafana".
Given that NBCU owns properties such as the Sundance Channel and Vivendi, "there will definitely be synergies we can explore together for NDTV Lumiere and even other avenues," Nair said.

NEW DELHI -- Indian talent will get a showcase at this year's Cannes festival which will see writer-director Dev Benegal, producer Sunil Doshi and film student Anirban Datta participating during a French Embassy-sponsored visit to the festival. "Being in charge of strenghtening Indo-French cooperation, I cannot be more happy for those three Indian talents," Said Mohamed Bendjebbour, Audiovisual Attache at the French Embassy in New Delhi Monday. Datta, a student at the prestigious Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute in Kolkata, is the first Indian to be selected in the "Cinefondation" section for his film "Tetris". "I am thrilled about having the opportunity of a lifetime and proud to represent India at this year's Cannes film festival," Datta said.
Watching this debut feature, it's easy to discern that it was directed by an award-winning cinematographer. "The Terrorist" fairly bursts with gorgeous images: endless close-ups of its lead actress's beautiful face and expressive eyes; numerous shots of water cascading down windows and through forests; nature scenes that rival those in "The Thin Red Line" in their pictorial quality. This visual elegance is the most striking element of this debut feature by Indian director Santosh Sivan that opens Friday at the Screening Room in New York.
Being "presented" by John Malkovich, who decided to champion the film after serving on the jury at the Cairo Film Festival -- where it won three awards, including best film -- "The Terrorist" is a slow-paced thriller inspired by the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Ghandi. The extraordinary Ayesha Dharkar plays the central role of Malli, a 19-year-old revolutionary being trained in Sri Lanka who is selected for her most important mission yet -- the suicide bombing of an unnamed political figure in India.
Ensconced on a farm while preparing for her ultimate sacrifice, Malli discovers that she is pregnant from a brief affair with a fellow freedom fighter. Although already a hardened killer, Malli begins to have second thoughts about her mission upon this revelation, and the bulk of the film concerns her spiritual struggle as she ponders her impending fate.
Filled with enough intense close-ups to inspire comparisons to Dreyer's "The Passion of Joan of Arc", the film is a highly arty, rarefied work that sacrifices thrills in favor of atmospherics. Director-cinematographer Sivan rather overdoes it at times, working on his visuals with an almost fetishistic concentration that too often calls attention to itself. But there is no denying his ability to sustain a mood, and his lead actress, who Malkovich rightly dubs "the heart and soul" of the film, delivers a performance of breathtaking intensity.
