Legendary The Fly and Dead Ringers director David Cronenberg's Crimes of the Future released in 2022, eight years after his previous film, Maps to the Stars. Thankfully, we're not going to have to wait quite as long for the body horror maestro's next project.
Titled The Shrouds, the movie stars Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger (Inglourious Basterds), Guy Pearce (Memento) and Sandrine Holt (Fear the Walking Dead), and is set for its world premiere later this month at the Cannes Film Festival.
Plot details had been pretty vague up until now, but the following synopsis gives us a much better idea of what to expect.
"Karsh, an innovative businessman and grieving widower, builds a novel device to connect with the dead inside a burial shroud. This burial tool installed at his own state-of-the-art – though controversial cemetery allows him and his clients to watch their specific departed loved one decompose in real time.

After an eight-year gap between Maps to the Stars and Crimes of the Future, thankfully the wait for the next feature from David Cronenberg isn’t nearly as long: The Shrouds will premiere this month at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s led by Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt, and while U.S. distribution has yet to be confirmed, French distributor Pyramide Films will release it on September 25, 2024. Ahead of the world premiere, the first poster and a batch of new images have arrived.
Here’s the synopsis: “Karsh, 50, is a prominent businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents GraveTech, revolutionary and controversial technology that enables the living to monitor their dear departed in their shrouds. One night, multiple graves, including that of Karsh’s wife, are desecrated. Karsh sets out to track down the perpetrators.”

With just ten days to go until the Cannes Film Festival lineup is unveiled, one title heavily tipped to premiere is David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, starring Vincent Cassel, Diane Kruger, Guy Pearce, and Sandrine Holt. While U.S. distribution has yet to be confirmed, French distributor Pyramide Films has now unveiled a September 25, 2024 release date alongside news that it will be the director’s longest film yet.
Clocking in at 119 minutes, it’s just a hair longer than Dead Ringers and Naked Lunch, which both ran 115 minutes. The distributor also confirms returning collaborators cinematographer Douglas Koch and editor Christopher Donaldson, who shot and edited Crimes of the Future, respectively, and the Canadian director’s longtime composer Howard Shore.
Here’s a new synopsis as well: “Karsh, 50, is a renowned businessman. Inconsolable since the death of his wife, he invents a revolutionary and controversial system, GraveTech, which allows the living...

Sarah Polley’s Oscar-nominated “Woman Talking” is based on the 2018 novel by Miriam Toews of the same name. But when adapting the book for the big screen, the team made one major shift in the editing room that changed the emotional tone of the film entirely. According to editor Christopher Donaldson, he and Polley decided to removed the character of August (Ben Whishaw) as the story’s narrator and reworked it so that Autje (Kate Hallett) would tell the story.
When Polley was writing her adaptation of the novel, about a group of Mennonite women and young girls who are trapped in a circle of sexual abuse, she followed along and set up the story around August, who learns about the horrors of what’s happening to these women.
“The first 10 pages of the script are about August,” Donaldson tells Variety. But in the editing room, the more he and Polley worked together,...

‘Women Talking’ cast tell Oscar voters, ‘We’re realizing how deep-rooted those problems are’ [Watch]
“Basically women are much better,” said “Women Talking” actor Ben Whishaw about the unique experience of being the lone male actor in a predominantly female cast. He discussed the film during an “Academy Conversation” Q&a with Oscar voters moderated by Stacey Wilson Hunt and also featuring writer-director Sarah Polley, producer Dede Gardner, actors Rooney Mara and Claire Foy, and composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. This story about “Women Talking” first appeared in the Below-the-Line issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
On the surface, Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” is one of the ultimate examples of a 2022 film that largely takes place in a single location. Polley adapted the novel by Miriam Toews, which was itself based on the true story of a Mennonite clan in Bolivia that was rampant with sexual abuse, and the action rarely leaves the hayloft of a barn in an isolated community.
In that loft, a group of women has been deputized to decide for all of the community’s female members, who must choose whether they should flee the men who have been systematically drugging and raping them or stay in the only place many of them have known.

On September 11, 2020, Chloe Zhao’s latest film “Nomadland” premiered at the Venice Film Festival to near universal acclaim. It won the festival’s top prize, the Golden Lion, and would win the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival that same day. It was immediately touted as the frontrunner to win Best Picture, and awards pundits were almost unanimous that Zhao was a shoo-in to become the second woman to win Best Director after Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”).

“I found it very boldly feminist and incredibly moving, and I knew it was going to be in [writer-director Sarah Polley‘s] hands a really great, special film,” says editor Roslyn Kalloo about working on the film “Women Talking.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Kalloo and her fellow editor Chris Donaldson above.
“Women Talking” tells the story of a group of women who debate their next course of action after discovering that they have been repeatedly assaulted by the men of their Mennonite community. It’s based on the novel of the same name by Miriam Toews that takes place almost entirely in the hayloft where the women’s discussion takes place. “It was amazing to read how Sarah had expanded the world, and had expanded the vision of the novel into the film,” Donaldson remembers. “That was really exciting, because she managed to lift, from a very dense novel and basically one location,...

It’s rare for sequels to make a big splash on the awards circuit; only two have ever won best picture — “The Godfather: Part II” and “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King.” But director Rian Johnson’s star-studded feature “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is proving to be an exception, with the filmmaker taking home the Visionary Award for his work on the upcoming whodunnit movie at this year’s 12th annual Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards.

Surprise! Which 18 nominations will ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ be fighting for at 2019 Emmys? [Exclusive]
Gold Derby was the first to report back on February 11 that the third season of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will not be eligible for the 2019 Emmy Awards. That’s because Season 3 will debut on June 5, just days after the official deadline of May 31 for this year’s eligibility period. It means that the program can’t compete for Best Drama Series and neither can 2018 nominated actors Elisabeth Moss, Ann Dowd, Yvonne Strahovski, Alexis Bledel and Joseph Fiennes. However, Hulu has still found a way to fight for 18 nominations at this September’s ceremony.
