Curated by the IndieWire Crafts team, Craft Considerations is a platform for filmmakers to talk about recent work we believe is worthy of awards consideration. In partnership with Netflix, for this edition, we look at how the crafts team behind “The Crown” evolved its visual language and storytelling for Season 5.
From the series’ inception, “The Crown” has been structured to evolve as the story of Queen Elizabeth’s reign unfolded. The most notable change, of course, has been the rotating cast, with first Claire Foy, then Olivia Coleman, and finally Imelda Staunton brought in to play the British monarch who stoically bore witness to seven decades of national crises. But the team behind the camera has also kept up with the decades, making adjustments that give Season 5 a weight and poignancy: this is the period where everything’s going wrong with Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), but we know just how much further wrong it will go.

This post contains spoilers for "Andor" episode 11.
When it was first revealed that 2015's long-awaited "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" would center on a "not the Galactic Empire" in the form of the First Order, it was hard not to roll one's eyes at the idea. That feeling only intensified when it came to light that the First Order would have its own Death Star-style superweapon in the form of Starkiller Base. Was this really the best premise the movie's creatives could come up with? The Empire all over again, only bigger and more extreme? As though the generation of civilians who grew up hearing stories about Emperor Palpatine's terrible regime would somehow get it in their heads that the real problem with the Empire was that it didn't go far enough. Talk about hack writing, eh?
"Lord, what fools these mortals be," as Puck puts it in William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream.

The last three episodes of “Andor” featured a prison without bars, but part of both the thrill and the pathos of the latest “Star Wars” series is that Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) has felt like a captive of the Empire the entire time. Everyone in “Andor” is trapped, often visually through the sculpted, strong lines of Luke Hull’s incredible production design, and always through the eye of the camera, helmed in the first three episodes and Episodes 8 through 10 by director Toby Haynes.
The last full scene of Episode 10, a rare face-to-face meeting in which double-agent Lonni Jung (Robert Emms) tries to get out of the spy game with his handler, rebellion mastermind Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård), Haynes and editor Simon Smith delight in jump cuts that snap closer and at slightly-off angles on Lonni. Major spoilers ahead for "Andor" episode 10.
"Andor" hit us with a whopper of an episode this week. From an amazing prison break to a speech from Luthen Rael (Stellan Skarsgård) detailing the bad things that often must be done for good outcomes, it absolutely restored my faith in the "Star Wars" franchise. It was a wild ride, and with only two more episodes this season, I'm bracing myself for a powerful cliffhanger. There was one other moment that stood out this week, and it has something in common with another juggernaut of a series, "House of the Dragon."
This week Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly) was faced with a difficult proposal. Literally. This Senator who is trying to change things from within the system as opposed to some of the other rebels has had to meet with someone distasteful to her when her access to her money -- that she's using...

Though famously ambivalent about film adaptations of his work — to the degree of never watching some — Alan Moore has written a screen original in “The Show,” perhaps attracted to a more hands-on approach to the medium now that he’s officially retired from comics. This playfully wayward mystery set in his native Northampton turns that burg into a kind of midlands Gotham, where not-quite-superheroic intrigue unfolds as convolutedly as possible. Fun if perhaps a little too tongue-in-cheek for its own good, the results will no doubt appeal most to Moore fans who’ll revel in his Byzantine plotting, noirish tropes and other signature elements. Fathom Events is providing them one-night U.S. theatrical access this Thursday, Aug. 26; release in other formats is as yet unannounced.
“The Show” is directed by Mitch Jenkins, a photographer who’s collaborated with the “Watchmen” scribe for 12 years, including on several shorts that introduced some of its characters and ideas.

"We've saved you the best seat in the house..." Shout Factory has released a new official US trailer for the strange, eccentric, indie film titled The Show, directed by filmmaker Mitch Jenkins. This premiered at the Sitges Film Festival last year, and we featured an early teaser trailer back then. A man's search for a stolen artifact leads him to the haunted town ("Northampton - a strange and haunted town in the heart of England as dangerous as he is") filled with Voodoo gangsters, masked adventurers, Depression-era private eyes and violent chiaroscuro women. From the mind of writer Alan Moore comes a new feature film starring Tom Burke (seen in The Souvenir), Siobhan Hewlett, Alan Moore (oh yes), Ellie Bamber, Darrell D'Silva, Richard Dillane, Christopher Fairbank, and Sheila Atim. Welcome to The Show. I'm still not sure what to make of it, and this new trailer doesn't really help much.

Kurt Wallander is set to take on more cases after European drama Young Wallander was renewed at Netflix for a second season.
The streamer launched the first season of the series, produced by Banijay-backed Yellow Bird UK and based on Henning Mankell’s novels, in September.
Swedish actor Adam Pålsson stars as the eponymous detective with Argo’s Richard Dillane and Black Mirror’s previously Leanne Best also starring. Pålsson takes on the mantle of Wallander after he was played by Kenneth Branagh in a BBC adaptation of Mankell’s books.
The show is a modern reimagining of the detective story with Kurt Wallander navigating the increasingly violent environment of present-day Sweden. In the first season, after he was unable to save a teenager from a gruesome attack, Wallander had to learn to cope with his guilt in order to solve the crime.

They say you know you’re getting old when policemen start getting younger. By shaving decades off grizzled veteran Inspector Wallander, Netflix’s latest will age us all. This six-part crime drama transforms Sweden’s most famous detective into a fresh-faced junior officer. Confusingly for fans of Henning Mankell’s hit crime novels and the previous screen adaptations, Young Wallander is young now. This isn’t a period prequel delving back into the character’s past, but a reimagining taking him back to day one, in the present.
Present-day Malmo isn’t a safe place to be. At least, not for the residents of the Rosengard estate, a place ruled over by drug dealers and gang violence. When we meet Wallander (Adam Pålsson), he’s living a solitary life there in a small apartment and keeping his job quiet from the locals who don’t exactly hold the police in esteem.

Netflix will tell the origin story of Swedish music streaming service Spotify in a yet-to-be-titled series from Young Wallander producer Yellow Bird UK.
The scripted series, which has echoes of Aaron Sorkin’s 2010 movie The Social Network, will be based on the book Spotify Untold, which was published this year by business journalists Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud.
It tells the story of how Swedish tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek and business partner Martin Lorentzon revolutionized the music industry through free and legal music streaming when they launched Spotify in 2006. Netflix said it is a drama about how hard convictions, unrelenting will and big dreams can challenge the status quo.
The untitled series will be directed by Per-Olav Sørensen, while Berna Levin (Young Wallander) is the executive producer. Luke Franklin is the producer.

Moore is known for distancing himself from the movies that are based on his work. He’s also been vocally angry with Hollywood over the years, so it’s weird to see that he’s actually doing a film project of his own now. This is his very first original feature film screenplay that will be produced.
Tom Burke (Only God Forgives) is set to star in the film and the story is described as a gothic fantasy drama that follows “Fletcher Dennis (Burke), who has been hired to track down a stolen artifact. This leads him to Northampton, a haunted town at...

Here’s a first look at graphic novel supremo Alan Moore’s (Watchmen) latest creation: The Show. Moore has scripted the film, which stars Tom Burke (War And Peace), Siobhan Hewlett (Show Pieces), Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals), Sheila Atim (Girl From The North Country), Richard Dillane (The White Princess) and Moore himself.
Production is currently underway in Northampton, UK. Mitch Jenkins (Show Pieces) is directing. The feature screenplay is Moore’s first not to be based on one of his graphic novels.
Gothic fantasy-drama The Show follows Fletcher Dennis (Burke) who has been hired to track down a stolen artefact, an investigation that brings him into contact with the most unusual and dangerous elements in Moore & Jenkins’ hometown Northampton. According to the film’s synopsis, these include “dead Lotharios, comatose sleeping beauties, Voodoo gangsters, masked adventurers, unlikely 1930s private eyes and violent chiaroscuro women.”

When artist Simon Hallward is killed in a terrible fire at his flat, the police initially assume that his death is nothing more than an accident. However, Morse’s attention is drawn to a Teasmaid next to the dead man’s bed that appears to have been the seat of the fire. Further investigation reveals that Hallward was responsible for poisoning food supplied to local supermarket, Richardson’s. This turns out to have been the cause of a mysterious recent ‘tummy bug’ which caused the death of a local woman. Hallward’s links with a nearby commune run...

When it comes to ghost stories focused on haunted houses my personal favourites are The Haunting and The Legend of Hell House, the psychological scares make them genuinely creepy and most importantly effective. The Haunting of Radcliffe House (also known as Altar) which has recently been released on DVD makes an attempt to scare its audience in classic ways, is it be effective?
When Meg Hamilton (Olivia Hamilton) is asked to renovate Radcliffe Hall she moves her family, including artist husband Alec (Matthew Modine) into the house while she works on it. As she discovers more about the house though including the revelation of a secret room in the attic things gradually push Meg to decide to move out of the house.

In the grand scheme of things, there is a really small minority of actors who can claim to have appeared in a film about dinosaurs, yet joining that exclusive collective are young actors Matt Kane and Natasha Loring, stars of the upcoming adventure The Dinosaur Project – and we had the opportunity to speak to the pair ahead of the film’s release.
Sib Bennett’s found footage thriller is set in the Congolese jungle, where we follow a group of explorers who stumble across a colony of dinosaurs. Kane plays Luke – a troublesome youngster who sneaks himself on the trip to be alongside his father, whilst Loring undertakes the role of Dr. Liz Draper.
The pair discuss what it’s like working closely with CGI, the challenges posed by the found-footage genre, whilst Kane also tells us of his admiration for on-screen father Richard Dillane. The pair also discuss working with director Bennett,...

★☆☆☆☆ The found footage format is beginning to feel more than a little tired these days, no more so than in Sid Bennett's genre mash-up The Dinosaur Project (2012). Here we follow the apparent endeavours of the British Cryptozoological Society as they embark on an expedition into the dark heart of the Congo in search of an extinct plesiosaur. Seasoned explorer Jonathan Marchant (Richard Dillane) leads the team of intrepid explorers, only to discover that his teenage son Luke (Matt Kane) has snuck along for the ride.

If there is one thing you can say about Sid Bennett’s The Dinosaur Project, is that it is exactly what you would expect from a found footage orientated, British film about dinosaurs. And that, unfortunately, is not a positive acknowledgement.
The film begins as a couple of local inhabitants in the Congolese jungle find a bag which has tapes of footage within it, documenting a British group of explorers’ improbable journey into the jungle where they discovered a colony of dinosaurs. Amongst those ambitious explorers – who had set off to Africa based on sightings of an unidentifiable sea creature – are Marchant (Richard Dillane), his troublesome teenage son Luke (Matt Kane), Dr. Liz Draper (Natasha Loring), and Charlie (Peter Brooke), amongst others.
As the group’s helicopter crashes in the wilderness, they find themselves stranded, and as they delve deeper into the forest, they unearth a settlement of the creatures that had been presumed extinct,...

It's not a patch on the previous quad, featured below, but just another reminder that the cool looking feature is set to hit UK theatres next month. The Sid Bennett helmed horror is somewhere between 'Jurassic Park' and 'Monsters' and uses the found footage style to showcase a small expedition group who discover a lost prehistoric world. It stars gorgeous blonde Brit Natasha Loring ('Beaver Falls') as well as Matt Kane ('The Cut'), Peter Brooke ('Wrong Turn 5''), Richard Dillane ('Argo') and Stephen Jennings ('Starship Troopers 3: Marauder'). Check out the new quad, old quad and previous trailer from the flick below....
