“Brace Yourself For A Shock!…200 Feet of Living Burning Horror!” Eugène Lourié’s second feature about an irate sea monster wrecking a city features sober eco-preaching, good performances by Gene Evans and André Morell, and several minutes of exciting stop-motion animation nirvana. One just needs to overlook a few lunkhead effects scenes and concentrate on the key Willis O’Brien / Pete Peterson material. It’s a Shock all right — do you prefer to be stepped on like a bug, or fried by a zillion volts of ‘projected radiation?’

‘This Picture Kills Fascists’ might be a motto for this bombshell essay documentary. Leo Hurwitz’s film wasn’t made welcome in 1948 and would surely be controversial today, as it’s just too &%#$ truthful and blunt about good old American bigotry and injustice. The passionate, jarring plea for humanist sanity really shakes up viewers, in a constructive way. Hurwitz said that one TV executive compared it to The Sermon on the Mount. It’s still a lightning bolt against fascist ideas flourishing in the Land of the Free.

Brett Ratner has teamed up with Mariah Carey to develop a new Christmas movie, which New Line Cinema already bought. At this point, very little is known about the project, except that it will focus on the holiday and a message that music can transport you back to happy times. The new movie is being written by David Diamond and David Weissman, who previously worked with Ratner on "The Family Man," starring Nicolas Cage and Tea Leoni. The plan is to include songs from different artists, including Carrey. The Christmas holiday is special for Carey, who wrote and performed "All I Want for Christmas Is You," a 1994 tune that has sold more than 14 million copies globally to become the biggest holiday son in recent memory and the biggest international hit of Carey's career.

It may be April, but evidently that.s not stopping New Line Cinemas from getting into the Christmas spirit. We know this because they have reportedly bought a pitch for an untitled Mariah Carey holiday movie. If the festive film isn.t entitled "All I Want For Christmas" then someone has made a huge mistake. Deadline was the first to report that the studio has purchased the idea from RatPac Entertainment . the production company created by Brett Ratner . and it.s believed that Mariah Carey will play a huge part in the film. But who is responsible? Well, it turns out that the hugely successful singer is behind the plan herself. Mariah Carey, who obviously has a thing for the Yuletide season, took her idea to Ratner herself. Clearly intrigued by the idea, Ratner got into contact with screenwriters David Diamond and David Weissman, as well as producer Jon Shestack.

With the exception of staple Christmas carols, perhaps the most well-known holiday song is "All I Want for Christmas is You" by chart-topping singer Mariah Carey. And now she'll be heading into holiday territory on the big screen as Deadline reports New Line has picked up a pitch from Brett Ratner's RatPac Entertainment that would see her starring in a Christmas movie. At this time, the plot of the holiday film is being kept under wraps, but Carey will likely be able to use her musical talents because it's said to feature the theme of how the power of music can transport you back in time to your truest, most authentic feelings. Sounds pretty cheesy, but that's Christmas movies for ya. The script will come from David Diamond and David Weissman, who previously scripted The Family Man for Brett Ratner to direct, though the filmmaker will only be producing this time.

Lock up the kids because RatPac Entertainment and New Line Cinema are teaming up for a project being dubbed the 'untitled Mariah Carey Christmas movie'.
David Diamond and David Weissman's pitch, an idea hatched by Carey herself and supported by filmmaker/producer Brett Ratner, deals with the theme of the ability of music to transport people back in time to find their truest feelings.
Producers are planning to include songs from Carey and other artists. Ratner and Jon Shestack are slated to produce.

This cleverly edited collection of letters reveals an attractive and energetic man. But Bernstein now has a mixed musical reputation – even if West Side Story will live forever
Like many figures eminent in their time through a grasp of the zeitgeist and a powerful personality, Leonard Bernstein's reputation has not worn well. Future generations may wonder why it was Bernstein who conducted the Berlin concerts in December 1989 to celebrate the fall of the Berlin wall. He had no connection with Berlin, and had conducted the Berlin Philharmonic only once, in 1979. There was, too, a very obvious candidate in Kurt Masur, the great conductor who had been involved in the Leipzig uprising. But the job fell to Bernstein, who had never even lived in the continent whose unification he was celebrating. No one seemed puzzled: it was a case of the triumph of the overwhelming personality.

Was Lindsay Lohan looking for one last hurrah before she heads to rehab? It sure looks like it.
Fresh from pleading no contest to charges of lying to the police and reckless driving, the 26-year-old did what anyone who was just sentenced to 90 days in locked rehab would do -- she hit up a Hollywood nightclub.
TMZ reports that Lohan tried to hide herself from cameras as her SUV pulled up to the Av Club, and was spotted covering her face with a blanket. The throng of paparazzi appears to have ruined the actress's plans, as she decided to take off without ever entering the club.
The decision in the end to skip the club might be the best move Lohan has made in a while, but the fact that she was even there shows where her head is at.

To quote the great Commandant Lassard, it has been “many, many wonderful” years since the original ‘Police Academy’ was released. From those days of risqué humour, walking one man sound effects and ‘Carry On’ style antics, grew a franchise that just refused to die. Some instalments were fun whilst others were nearly unwatchable, but still Mahoney and Co held a special place in American culture.
Whatever way you look at it, the 1984 original was a huge success and earned over $80 million at the box office, meaning a modern continuation was always inevitable. We heard news a while back that newbie director Scott Zabielski was directing some sort of sequel, but things have been quiet for a very long time.

Bravely ignoring the tide of indifference, the Police Academy remake continues to be a thing. The trend of unwanted remakes continues, and the latest victim is a well-known ‘80s comedy. Deadline reports that screenwriter Jeremy Garelick (The Break-Up) has joined the effort to reboot Police Academy, the wacky franchise that spanned seven films and a TV series over the course of a decade — a very long, mostly Steve Guttenberg–less decade.

New Line is set to give Police Academy the remake treatment. Variety reports that Tosh.0's Scott Zabielski is making his feature film directorial debut. He won the coveted gig over more experienced directors, after completing actual police academy training as a reserve officer in West Hollywood. The script was co-written by David Diamond and David Weissman. The film's original producer, Paul Maslansky, is returning to produce the remake. Production is expected to begin next year, after casting is completed.
The original was a box office success when it was released in 1984. It stayed atop the box office for three weeks and then dropped down a slot. It regained the top spot for it's fifth and sixth weekends and continued doing well throughout the summer. The film grossed more than $81 million domestically, even though it never showed on more than 1,587 screens.

I have to admit, out of all the remakes that have been in some stage of development over the last couple of years, Police Academy is one of the last ones I actually expected to see get made. Nevertheless, New Line appears to be serious about the project, and they are continuing to move forward with it. This week it has been announced that the project just gained a director by the name of Scott Zabielski. Zabielski has no feature film credits to his name, but he is a director on the Comedy Central series Tosh.0. Perhaps more interestingly, he has actually been through police academy himself, as he also serves as a reserve police officer in West Hollywood. I'm not at all familiar with Tosh.0, but from what I hear it is a Web Soup-type of show that comments on viral videos and internet culture. Which is perfect because...

New Line Cinema has hired first-time director Scott Zabielski ("Tosh.0") to direct a reboot of the "Police Academy" franchise which Paul Maslansky will produce from a script by David Diamond and David Weissman ("When In Rome").
Like the original series, this will follows a ragtag group of police recruits who repeatedly are called to help save the city. Zabielski is also a reserve police officer in West Hollywood. [Source: The Hollywood Reporter]

Studio New Line confirms Scott Zabielski is to take charge of the 8th instalment of the love-it-or-hate-it rookie cops franchise
You might think that seven Police Academy films were more than enough, but somebody in Hollywood disagrees with you. Studio New Line has hired first-time director Scott Zabielski, a part-time reserve police officer in west Hollywood, to take charge of a new film which will aim to reboot the long-running and much-maligned comedy series.
There has been speculation for some time that a new Police Academy film – the first since 1994's ill-fated Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow – was in the works. The series made a total of $242m at the worldwide box office and also spawned two TV series. Original producer Paul Maslansky, who is on board for the new iteration, said in 2010 that he hoped to return the series to the big screen with an entirely new cast.

I am willing to bet the very little money that comes from this site that the silly, comedic action comedy that will be the remake of 21 Jump Street is why the following news has happened.
Variety is reporting that “longtime “Tosh.0″ helmer Scott Zabielski will make his feature directorial debut with New Line’s remake of Police Academy.”
The trade tells us that one of the reasons he beat out several more experienced directors was because he had actually gone through actual police academy training as a reserve officer in West Hollywood. That’s great and I am sure he will do something fun with the material but do we really need this? Reno 911 and Super Troopers didn’t add enough to the goofy police ensemble comedies? The Other Guys and now Jump Street aren’t enough? Does anyone remember that National Security movie with Martin Lawrence?

Variety reported today that Zabielski won over a number of veteran directors all anxious to reboot the comedy franchise they grew up watching. ABC has bought Zero Hour, a mystery drama from Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring. The project hails from ABC Studios and Lorenzo Dibonaventura and Dan McDermott’s company, which is based there. Zero Hour is described as an epic adventure about a skeptical everyman who gets swept up in one of history’s greatest conspiracies. His search leads him on a dangerous journey around the world collecting clues that will unlock not only a spectacular mystery surrounding the Twelve Apostles but also questions about his own identity. Dibonaventura and McDermott are having a busy first development season with a number of high-profile sales, all to ABC. They include a crime drama from The Blind Side writer-director John Lee Hancock; a drama from Changing Lanes scribe Michael Tolkin and ER showrunner David Zabel about a complex female Ada; the comedy The Wonderful Women of Will’s World, from writers David Diamond and David Weissman,...

Exclusive: John Lee Hancock is returning to television. The Blind Side writer-director has teamed with Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Dan McDermott’s recently launched TV company for an untitled crime drama project that has been sold to ABC. Hancock is set to write, direct and executive produce the drama, which centers on an unorthodox protagonist described as Walter Mitty of the crime world. Hancock will executive produce with di Bonaventura and McDermott for ABC Studios where Di Bonaventura Pictures Television is under a 3-year deal. Hancock dabbled in TV in the late 1990s with brief stints on Falcone and L.A. Doctors, which he created, but has spent the last decade in movies, most recently writing and directing The Blind Side. After several years of struggling to get the movie made with Julia Roberts turning down the lead and 20th Century Fox dropping the project altogether, Hancock saw his film rake...

Most of the energy in that expensive gas you put in your car is wasted as heat, but new shocks could take some of that wasted energy and put it back into the car, giving you way more bang for the burn.
From an energy perspective, your car is really just a heat machine that happens to move. Only 10 to 16% of the fuel energy that you burn moves the car forward (by overcoming air drag and road resistance), while the rest is dissipated on its way to the drive train. But engineers have been looking to get more bang for their burn since cars rolled off the assembly line. One overlooked source of power has been the suspension system--until now. Conventional shock absorbers dissipate energy through a combination of coiled metal springs and hydraulic dampers. Several engineering teams are now developing what is essentially a miniature power generator for wheels...

In an interview with Movie Mikes, actor Steve Guttenberg has revealed just who is behind the script for the proposed Police Academy reboot, which is rumoured to star some of the original cast, alongside a new generation of police recruits… Er, didn’t they do this already in Police Academy 3? Are you sure this isn’t just a remake of that film? Says Guttenberg:
Warner Bros. is developing a new P.A. as we speak by David Diamond and David Weisman.
Many of you may not be familiar with Diamond and Weisman’s previous work, I’ll admit even I have to check the IMDb – but it doesn’t look good: When in Rome, Old Dogs, The Family Man. I did however enjoy Evolution – although that may have been down to the cast and director Ivan Reitman rather than the script… I don’t hold out any hope.

Chicago – Just when you thought Hollywood’s recent slate of romantic comedies couldn’t get any worse, along comes “When in Rome,” a film so deplorable that it should be arrested for cinematic harassment. The filmmakers seem hellbent on systematically humiliating each member of its gifted ensemble, while insulting moviegoers with the very notion that this exercise in laziness could be passed off as entertainment.
I once told Jason Reitman that “Juno” was the first film I ever wanted to date. “When in Rome” is not the first film I ever wanted to dump, but it surely is the first I ever wanted to file a restraining order against. It plays like a checklist of tired tropes that I never want to see again at the movies. A “magical” premise that’s merely an excuse for contrived plot arcs? Check. A neurotic female protagonist who constantly needs to be saved by her man?...

Does this sounds familiar? Committed non-parent type in high-status job unexpectedly finds himself lumbered by an ex with kids he never knew he had. As the kids grow attached to him, the reluctant father struggles to handle his new role. Ultimately he makes it clear that the kids are too much trouble and they have to go back. With the kids gone, though, the reformed dad realizes that family is more important than business. After racing through an airport/traffic jam/zoo (take your pick) the family is reunited and everyone (presumably) lives happily ever after.
If you haven't seen that scenario in a family movie yet, you clearly don't watch many of them. If that's the case, you ain't gonna like Old Dogs. It's not giving much away to say the above is the plot in a nutshell. Just because it's not original, though, doesn't mean it's bad (c'mon,...

Calling Old Dogs utterly unbearable may be the understatement of the year alongside "healthcare needs an overhaul." A family comedy by genre only, this John Travolta and Robin Williams vehicle is so maligned, mismanaged and other "M" words, that a point is reached in the movie where audiences are forced to ask, "Wait, is this a joke? Is Old Dogs really this godawful or is Walt Becker playing a huge yet fabulously hilarious prank on me?"
No. Director Walt Becker (Wild Hogs) is not playing a prank on you, unless you call wasting an hour and a half of your life on this poo trap a "prank."
Travolta and Williams are longtime buddies who head a sports PR firm. Travolta's Charlie likes to have good times while Williams' Dan is a pent-up fuddy-duddy. Both are exhausting. When Dan reunites with Vicki (Kelly Preston, Travolta's real-life wife), his one-night stand from almost a decade earlier,...

Old Dogs
Directed by: Walt Becker
Cast: Robin Williams, John Travolta, Seth Green, Kelly Pickler
Running Time: 1 hr 35 mins
Rating: PG
Due Out: March 9, 2010
Plot: Dan and Charlie (Williams and Travolta) are two business partners who have been best friends for thirty years. Their life is thrown for a curve when they find out that Dan has two twins with “the one who got away” from seven years ago.
Who’S It For?: Children will be educated in clichés, and adults will get some kicks watching respectable actors subject themselves to thoughtless wacky humor. In modern comedy terms, fun for the whole family!
Movie:
The reputations of Travolta and Williams earned from earlier successful works might help create a sort of leeway for the mindless humor that they seem to partake in here so lazily. Were it not for their familiar faces, the vacuous scenarios that these...

Chicago – Culturally insensitive, disgusting, violent, vile, and shockingly unfunny, “Old Dogs” is the kind of embarrassment for which stars, writers, and directors should be forced to do community service. If someone delivered a product this awful to you at a restaurant, you wouldn’t have to pay for it and you could probably sue. Those of you who paid to see it in theaters, should consider a class action case. The rest of you should just avoid it like you would a dog turd on the sidewalk.
Blu-Ray Rating: 0.5/5.0
“Old Dogs” is one of those comedies that mistakes physical violence for humor.
