Chicago – The United States military as superheroes has never gotten a better workout than in “Hunter Killer,” the title that sounds like a Halloween-themed movie, but it’s a style of submarine that seeks to adjust our geo-political balance. Gerard Butler is the commander hoping to prevent World War 3.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
There are several absurdities, starting with the casting. The rapper Common portrays a starchy military man but looks like he’s playing dress up, and has to hear lines from Gary Oldman (as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff) like “I know you’re a war hero, but…” Gerard Butler is on an action movie streak (“Hunter Killer” was made by the same production team that gave us “Olympus Has Fallen” and “London Has Fallen” with Gerard), but his Scottish accent couldn’t pronounce the word “naval.” But the film moves along in a decent action-oriented pace, and...

You know those DVDs that sit in a giant Walmart bin, where, if you’re so inclined, you can spend half an hour sifting for a $2 treasure? The kinds of movies usually dumped unceremoniously into theaters in January, and maybe if you’re going stir crazy you take a chance and find yourself happily surprised? “Hunter Killer” is one of those.
It’s not going to win any Oscars, or give “Halloween” a run for its money. And what it’s doing taking up valuable cineplex space in the fall is anyone’s guess. But sometimes there’s a pleasure to be had in finding one’s low expectations met and even surpassed. And since we’re already damning this one with faint praise, let’s push it further still: As Cold War submarine thrillers starring Gerard Butler go, you could do a lot worse.

“If it doesn’t suck, we don’t do it.” That’s one of the only memorable lines of dialogue from the latest of Gerard Butler’s impressively bland action vehicles, but at this point it might as well be the inscription on a plaque that’s mounted behind his agent’s desk. Between “London Has Fallen,” “Geostorm,” and “Den of Thieves” — all real movies, this critic is tragically able to confirm — it’s beginning to seem as if the rugged Scotsman is just waiting by Nicolas Cage’s mailbox and stealing all of the most boring scripts before he can read them. On the plus side, that would leave Cage no choice but to continue starring in wildly eccentric fare like “Mandy.” On the minus side, it might result in Butler hosting a lot more press conferences at the Pentagon, where — in keeping with current custom — the actor recently...

He has always played intense and serious roles, but not many know that Bollywood actor Neil Nitin Mukesh has a humorous side which he would like to explore in films. The actor is keen to do situational comedies. 'I would love to be a part of a comedy film but it is very important what type of comedy the film has to offer. I can't bang my head here and there and make people laugh,' Neil told Ians on phone from Mumbai. 'I would love to be a part of a situational comedy, something like 'Hera Pheri',' he added. Five-films-old Neil has garnered plenty of critical acclaim with serious roles in his films 'Johnny Gaddaar', 'Aa Dekhen Zara', 'Jail', 'New York' and 'Lafangey Parindey' but off-screen the actor admits he is a clown. 'I am a clown off-screen and keep...

'7 Khoon Maaf' (2011)
Starring Priyanka Chopra, Neil Nitin Mukesh, John Abraham, Irrfan Khan, Aleksandr Dyachenko, Annu Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Vivaan Shah
Director Vishal Bhardwaj—best known for his stellar Shakespeare adaptations 'Maqbool' (2003) and 'Omkara' (2006)—turns to literature once again—this time, Ruskin Bond's short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands'—for his latest film, '7 Khoon Maaf.' While the basis for his films often comes from elsewhere, Bhardwaj is one of the most original Hindi filmmakers today, and he outdoes himself once again with '7 Khoon Maaf.'
Bhardwaj frequently takes commercial actors and shows audiences a very different, artistic side of them. He consistently brings out the best in his performers. Sometimes, it's merely his inspired casting that makes actors look good. Either way, it would behoove big-time stars to clamor for even small roles in his films. Priyanka Chopra has been his biggest beneficiary.

Priyanka Chopra has seven husbands in forthcoming .7 Khoon Maaf. and the song .Darrling., which has already created a buzz on music channels, is for her Russian husband and aptly adapted from popular Russian folk song .Kalinka., says director-composer Vishal Bhardwaj..One husband in this film is a Russian who comes from an army background. So I was looking for a typical Russian song for that husband which Priyanka would sing in the film to impress him,. Bhardwaj told reporters here...Kalinka. is the most famous Russian folk song and has been used in more than 15 films. All the World War II films. If you see, where Russia is involved, this song is bound to be there. It is actually the most used and abused song,. the 50-year-old said..It goes with my film, so I wanted to keep it. Unnecessarily some people were trying to say that we stole it...

There is no denying that the promo of Vishal Bhardwaj's next Saat Khoon Maaf is indeed captivating. Besides Priyanka Chopra's mesmerising performance, if there is one thing that stays with you long after the promo has ended it's the song 'Darrrling' which plays in the background. While Saat Khoon Maaf itself is an adaptation of Ruskin Bond's novel 'Sussanna's Seven Husbands', even the song 'Darrrling' isn't entirely original. The song in fact finds its roots in the Russian folk song 'Kalinka' and even has a few Russian words in it. The Russian song 'Kalinka' was written in 1860 by Ivan Larionov and has since then been a part of various Russian stage shows. One of the reasons for using a Russian song could be the fact that one of Priyanka Chopra's 7 Husbands in Saat Khoon Maaf is Russian actor Aleksandr Dyachenko.

One thing about Indian films, they do not hire ugly chicks. Priyanka Chopra is another stunner, and former Miss World. Lately she's stuck herself into several run of the mill rom-coms in Bollywood without too much success, her last truly big hit was Dostana in 2008. I think I feel her making a comeback though, with her latest film to "hit the floors", 7 Khoon Maaf.
7 Khoon Maaf shares the story of a Black Widow who murders each of her seven husbands, the story takes Priyanka's lead character from age 20 to 65. This is not such fluffy stuff, and it seems like the kind of project that could finally get her to stretch her acting wings and let us know what she's really got. As if the story weren't enough to inspire her, she's got a mean cast of leading men to contend with, playing her seven husbands are Neil Nitin Mukesh (New...
