Production designer Patrice Vermette and set decorator Zsuzsanna Sipos took home statuettes for their work on Dune at the Academy Awards on Sunday, with Vermette paying “special” tribute to his “friend” Jean-Marc Vallée—the Canadian filmmaker behind Big Little Lies, Dallas Buyers Club and more, who died suddenly in December, aged 58.
Vermette also thanked director Denis Villeneuve “for allowing us to dream” and “for being a great friend,” saying, “I owe this to you.”
“I’m such a crybaby, I’m sorry,” added Sipos. “It means an awful lot and I just want to thank my team and everyone who participated, and for the opportunity.”

The films competing for the 2022 Best Production Design Oscar are “Dune,” “Nightmare Alley,” “The Power of the Dog,” “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and “West Side Story.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (16/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Nightmare Alley” (39/10), “West Side Story” (4/1), “The Tragedy of Macbeth” (9/2), and “The Power of the Dog” (9/2).
Six of the individual craftspeople in this lineup have been nominated before and four have won at least once. The only newcomers in the bunch are production designers Stefan Dechant (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) and Tamara Deverell (“Nightmare Alley”) and set decorators Amber Richards (“The Power of the Dog”) and Zsuzsanna Sipos (“Dune”).
Nancy Haigh (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) is on her ninth bid and could add a third trophy to her collection after having triumphed for “Bugsy” (1992) and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2020). The only other woman who has achieved three...

For the first time in her career, set decorator Rena DeAngelo has stepped into the world of Wes Anderson. DeAngelo, who previously earned an Oscar nomination for "Bridge of Spies," worked on around 150 sets for "The French Dispatch." Typically, eight of them would be going at once. Considering how visually dense the film is, that makes the number of sets all the more staggering.
DeAngelo half-jokes she's surprised they pulled it off. In addition to the large number of sets, they were created for three different stories -- not to mention the framing device -- which meant that each set...

There’s topical, there’s timely, and then there’s “The Post,” which feels less like a historical thriller set in 1971 than it does an exhilarating caricature of the year 2017. While Steven Spielberg’s latest film rivetingly dramatizes the publication of the Pentagon Papers (and eloquently unpacks the consequences of their dissemination), “The Post” wears the Nixon era like a flimsy disguise that it wants you to see right through.
That’s not to take away from Ann Roth’s ratty and exquisite period costume design, or to detract from how immaculately set decorator Rena DeAngelo recreated the smokey thrum of the old Washington Post newsroom. It’s certainly not to diminish Meryl Streep’s fraught and powerfully grounded portrayal of the late publishing scion Katharine Graham — she hasn’t been this good since “Adaptation,” or maybe even “Death Becomes Her,” if ever.

Leave it to the Brits! The BAFTA nominations were announced and they gave us a slightly different look at the awards season! For instance, Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight," the leading Oscar contender in the U.S. just received 3 noms including Best Film, Supporting Actor for Mark Ruffalo and Original Screenplay. No Director nomination for McCarthy.
Meanwhile, Steven Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies," a handsomely-produced period piece led the pack along with Todd Haynes' "Carol," another handsomely-produced period piece. Both films garnered nine nominations each including Best Picture. "Bridge of Spies" and "Carol" will duke it out with "Spotlight," Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu's "The Revenant" (eight nominations), and Adam McKay's "The Big Short" (five nominations) for the Best Picture trophy.
So where's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" you ask? They're relegated to the technical categories. Apparently, sequels, no matter how great they are, can't compete with originals.

- The Film Stage
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has just announced there nominations and there’s quite a lot to process, so let’s start from the top. Steven Spielberg’s Cold War drama Bridge of Spies and Todd Haynes’ gorgeous relationship drama Carol have tied for the lead with nine nominations apiece, with both films receiving nominations for Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (in their respective categories). Not far behind is Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s revenge epic The Revenant with eight nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Editing.
What may come as a surprise to some is that Adam McKay’s comedy-drama about the 2008 financial crisis did rather well. It may have only received five nominations, but they were all major nods: Best Film, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale), and Best Editing. Meanwhile, the film that has...

The Broadcast Film Critics Association, of which I'm a proud voting member, has announced the nominations for the 21st annual Critics' Choice Awards. We're doing something different this year, we're combining both the movie and TV categories for one spectacular night of celebrating the visual art -- cinema and television. And we're going back to our original name and simply presenting the 21st annual Critics. Choice Awards gala.
This year, and after racking our brains trying to figure out who to nominate (our deadline was last Friday at 11 p.m.), George Miller's "Mad Max: Fury Road" led the movie pack with 13 nominations including best picture!
I'll be attending our gala on January 17th and I'll make sure to keep you posted on the winners! For now, here is the full list of nominees for the 21st Critics' Choice Awards:

Last week, I wrote about how visual effects can help an audience escape into another world in a film. A movie’s sets can do the same thing, convincing the audience that it is in the same world as the characters, regardless of that world’s time period or geographic location. Indeed, sets can help build a world that does not even exist on earth. The Academy Award for Best Production Design (previously known as Best Art Direction) awards a film’s production designer, responsible for the overall sets, and its set decorator, responsible for filling up those sets with props, among other things. The category tends to reward a combination of period and fantasy films. But while period films certainly predominate, at least one fantasy title, sometimes more, scores every year. Contemporary nominees are rare. But what this category tends to value more than anything else is grandeur. Like most crafts categories,...

This year I've had the pleasure of attending a few celebratory events for movies. At these luncheons or cocktail parties the filmmakers mingle with media types and Academy members. The most recent was a lunch for The Help held at Desmond's which is quite rectangular like a railroad apartment albeit one with very high ceilings. This gave the event a distinct bottleneck frenzy feel once Oscar buzzing actresses Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer were making the rounds... or in this case walking the aisle. Conversation became next to impossible. After a quick exchange with Octavia (in very high spirits) we both did a double take of mutual fandom; the hilarious Anna Deavere Smith (Nurse Jackie, Rachel Getting Married) was squeezing past us saying a string of goodbyes. By the time I was face to face with Viola Davis, utterly gorgeous and much younger looking in person, she was ending a...
