TheBlaze host Tomi Lahren accused YouTube star Shane Dawson of staging a kiss with another man at a Sundance Film Festival event to make a political statement at her expense. Dawson says he was subsequently kicked out for being “not straight.” But everyone’s made peace and event organizers have denied that Dawson’s sexuality has anything to do with the situation. It all started Monday night at an event Lahren was hosting called “Remind the Nation” that showcased veterans groups, including The Veterans Project. The dispute began when Dawson and a friend approached and asked for a photo with Lahren,...

YouTube megastar Shane Dawson said last night that he was thrown out of an event held in conjunction with Sundance Film Festival for holding hands with his boyfriend -- fellow YouTube host Ryland Adams.
In a series of now-deleted tweets, Dawson said that he was kicked out of an event dubbed Remind The Nation, according to The Daily Dot, which aims to share the stories of war veterans. It was hosted by the polarizing conservative TV personality Tomi Lahren. Dawson initially claimed that it was Lahren who'd had him booted from the event -- whereupon security tried to break his leg. In the now-deleted tweets, Dawson also claimed to have video footage of the incident, and said he’d reported it to police.

Judging solely from the number of bare butts in the first five minutes of “The Deleted,” one might think Bret Easton Ellis assumes there is a direct correlation between cheeks out and thumbs up. Adding the intrigue of a nefarious organization chasing down and drugging the randy would-be models in hiding, and “The Deleted” exploits just about every Hollywood trope imaginable. It’s clickbait storytelling — told with classic Ellis flair.

The upcoming murder-mystery, led by YouTube star Joey Graceffa, will feature a cast of digital video standouts who will gather together for a dinner party that turns into a murderous affair.

"This book is a great chance for me to reach my audience in a new way," said Kjellberg. "The original idea actually came from my fans via Twitter, so I really think they're going to love it. I'm excited to finally share...

Tyler Oakley will join the ranks of published YouTube celebrities. The wildly popular vlogger, who boasts over 6.8 million subscribers on his channel, just announced his first book deal for a collection of personal essays called Binge, which will be released in October 2015.
In an announcement video, Oakley notes how he was previously offered a book deal in 2012, but turned down the offer because he wasn’t sure if he had stories worth telling. Oakley goes on to explain how he took the next two years to write as often as he could, until he felt like he had a collection of personal essays he felt comfortable enough sharing with the world. The vlogger pitched the idea to Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint in December 2014 and finally signed off on a book deal.

Earlier this year, we covered fitness powerhouse Beachbody's "YouTube test group," where a set of top online video creators - including Jack Douglass, Bart Baker, Olga Kay, and Shira Lazar - collectively dropped over 100 pounds and 85 inches by way of Tony Horton's P90 program. The before and after photos seemed too good to be true—commenters cried 'air brush' and 'spray tan.' So when we caught wind of a new class of YouTubers for Beachbody's 21 Day Fix Extreme program with trainer Autumn Calabrese, we had to get an inside look at the process to make sure it was legit.
The new group underwent back-to-back twenty-one day programs and featured Jennifer Veal, SourceFed stars Lee Newton and Steve Zaragoza, Timothy DeLaGhetto, Rick Carter, Shane Dawson, and yours truly. Now the last time I covered a story as an embedded journalist, I did a ridealong with the Good Cops, and things went horribly wrong.

Two months after it launched an invite-only beta, Vessel is going public. The online video platform founded by former Hulu execs Jason Kilar and Rich Tom has opened its doors to the public, and in order to woo potential subscribers, Vessel has offered a year-long free trial for anyone who signs up in the first 72 hours after the site's launch.
Vessel, for the uninitiated, is a platform built around the concept of windowed content. Participating creators can make their videos available on Vessel 72 hours before they appear anywhere else. In order to watch this exclusive content, viewers must purchase a $2.99-a-month subscription, which provides access to Vessel's entire library. This subscription revenue, combined with the site's unique advertising model, theoretically allows creators to take in revenues that far exceed what they earn on other sites.
This model has convinced a large number of well-known content creators to try Vessel out.

United Talent Agency (UTA) has promoted one of its digital-forward employees to the esteemed rank of partner. The Beverly Hills-based talent and literary agency has made agent Brent Weinstein head of the company’s Digital Media division.
As UTA’s new partner and digital head, Weinstein essentially gets confirmation of the role he’s been performing for years. The executive helped form UTA’s digital media department back in 2003; since then, he’s led a team of agents, developing opportunities for and advising UTA’s clients within the digital division. Some of Weinstein’s past clients include YouTubers Shane Dawson, Hannah Hart, and iJustine; Derek Jeter’s digital media startup The Players’ Tribune; Universal Music Group; and the producers of Vidcon and Montreal’s Just For Laughs Comedy Festival.

Shane Dawson knows his videos aren’t for everyone, but he doesn’t think that preference should stop people from reading his upcoming book. The memoir is called I Hate Myselfie and will feature personal essays surrounding the YouTuber’s life which fans and haters alike may ultimately relate to.
I Hate Myselfie will contain 18 personal pieces about Dawson’s life before he had over 13.1 million subscribers across three different YouTube channels. All 240 pages will cover very down-to-earth (and even serious) topics from the digital star’s experiences, like struggling with weight, being a fat child, and growing up poor. He told Variety he even included “thoughts on astral projection and the nature of the universe — I kind of just put it all out there.”
The YouTube star and filmmaker explained how he didn’t think he could “pull off a novel.” Instead, he aimed for a collection of personal essays.

2014 was a year of rapid growth for the online video industry. Major media companies invested millions into online networks, high-quality programming emerged on platforms like Netflix and Amazon, and young, hungry content creators assembled millions of fans on YouTube and beyond. 2015 will no doubt continue this explosive upward trend. Here are a few overarching themes we expect to remain relevant through the new year.
Upstart video platforms will attempt to convert YouTube viewers.
This year, several companies have openly courted YouTube stars by offering more lucrative earnings than those stars can make on the world's biggest video site. The two most significant challengers are Vessel--the recently-debuted startup founded by former Hulu boss Jason Kilar--and Facebook.
Both of those companies spent 2013 courting YouTube content creators, and toward the end of the year, both showed off concrete successes. Vessel showed off a slew of partners (including Shane Dawson, Ingrid Nilsen, and Connor...

In recent days, Sony Pictures mustered the courage to distribute The Interview, but apparently still wanted help doing so. The entertainment studio asked the U.S. Government to help get its Seth Rogan and James Franco comedy about the assassination of North Korea’s Kim Jong-un onto iTunes.
According to The New York Times, Sony wanted to allow The Interview to be purchased and streamed via video-on-demand on iTunes. The entertainment company asked the White House to help it broker a deal with Apple to distribute the comedy on iTunes. Apple was apparently “not interested,” and a rep for the company declined to provide a comment to the Nyt.
Apple has always been a top distribution platform for many VOD titles. YouTubers like Shane Dawson and Kurt Hugo Schneider have even used it to get their films out into the world when Hollywood-level distribution deals weren’t possible. But these...

The online video community is making big moves on iTunes, and Apple's retail service has provided those creators with a little support of its own. iTunes users can now navigate to a landing page that offers more than a dozen podcasts hosted by YouTubers and other web video personalities.
The landing page supports an increasing trend of YouTubers with their own podcasts. Perhaps the best example of this trend is Shane and Friends, the audio series hosted by Shane Dawson that features weekly interviews with other members of the YouTube community. More recently, Tyler Oakley, Grace Helbig, and PewDiePie have all following suit by launching chatty podcast series of their own. All of those offerings can be found on the landing page, as can additional podcasts from Cgp Grey, Kingsley, and Rhett and Link.
For these creators, podcasts are another medium--like books, films, and TV shows--to which YouTube subscribers can be converted.

Our favorite German DJ-turned-YouTuber just signed a deal that looks to bring his unique personality to a wider audience. Flula Borg, whose vlogs, Auto Tunes, and other assorted videos have drawn more than 56 million views, has signed with talent agency UTA. Borg's channel, which has 456,000 subscribers, may not have the raw numbers of other UTA clients like Shane Dawson and Joey Graceffa, but the musician from Erlangen is still a prominent figure in the YouTube community. In addition to his own videos, he frequently collaborates with other creators, including Grace Helbig, Rhett & Link, Miranda Sings, and many others. He has also brought his instantly-recognizable delivery to the channels of Entertainment Weekly, GQ, the Dallas Mavericks, and several other brands. Recently, Borg has begun to expand his career outside of YouTube. Most notably, he landed a role in Pitch Perfect 2, where he will play a member of a rival a...

Connor Franta's latest video is a significant one. The vlogger, whose cheerful personality and winning smile have helped him amass 3.6 million subscribers and more than 156 million views, has announced he is gay. In his "Coming Out" video, the 22-year-old vlogger discussed his rural upbringing, the anxiety caused by his homosexual identity, the process of coming out to his friends and family, and, finally, his current feelings. "This is just one little part of who I am," he said, "and I'm not going to let my sexuality define or confine me. It's part of me, it's not all of me." Franta's sexuality is likely related to his decision to leave YouTube supergroup Our2ndLife, which he departed in July. At the time, he alluded to “personal things I’m dealing with behind the camera" while also admitting he's been “a very unhappy person for the past six months now.” When Franta left Our2ndLife,...

Maker Studios is bringing some comedy to the online video masses with its newest original series. CrashPad, hosted by YouTube’s parody king Bart Baker, will debut its premiere episode on December 5, 2014. CrashPad boasts an unusual format, concocted from the idea that the series should be accessible via different mediums. The 12-episode series will be part talk show, part game show, and part video clip show, with commentary on the most talked-about videos which Maker will source from Jukin Media’s large collection of clips. CrashPad will be co-produced by Maker and Drama 3/4, and feature guest appearances from digital stars (and some of Baker's fellow Maker talent) such as Iman “AlphaCat” Crosson, Ed Bassmaster, Amy Pham, Sam Macaroni, Timothy DeLaGhetto, Shane Dawson, Lisa Schwartz, DeStorm, King Bach, and Jesse Wellens of Prank vs. Prank. Maker will distribute CrashPad on its own site as well as on YouTube and Music Choice’s platforms.

With nearly three million subscribers and more than 318 million views on his personal channel, Kingsley is one of YouTube's premier gossipers. For his latest act, he has left his main channel to host Drama King, a new web series produced by Defy Media, distributed on the ClevverTV channel, and starring plenty of guests from the YouTube community. Drama King, as its title suggests, features candid discussions about celebrities who cause lots of tabloid-friendly drama. The subject of the first episode is pop star Ariana Grande. "Is Ariana Grande a diva?" asks Kingsley at the start of the video, "Or is everyone else just a crybaby?" He then proceeds to answer this question alongside his two guests, Grace Helbig and Quinta B. A comfortable-looking set and some mimosas give the program a lazy Sunday feel. The informal, chatty feel of Drama King resembles the tone of the podcasts launched by YouTubers like Helbig and Tyler Oakley.

Fullscreen's motto is "power to the creators." During a presentation at VidCon, the multi-channel network explained how it will live by that mantra. Fullscreen provides marketing and management support for its partners, a group that includes YouTube luminaries such as Grace Helbig, Shane Dawson, and The Fine Bros. Strompolos' plan is to fund the passion projects of this elite group, thus allowing them to provide even more quality programming for their fans. "We look forward to bringing the best work to you from the best creators of our generation," he said during his presentation. This isn't the first time Fullscreen has made a significant monetary investment in its creators. For instance, in 2012, it opened up a million dollar fund that it used to support smaller channels.
