Vera's death left Tarmey's alter-ego Jack a widower - but he has recently formed a close bond with fellow pigeon lover Connie Rathbone, played by Rita May. Speaking on This Morning, Dawn admitted: "Do you know, Jack and Vera never kissed - not once. And when I found out Jack had got another woman, I rang him up and said: 'I hope you don't kiss her'. "I really miss Bill, but I still feel as if I'm in it because the public talk to me (more) »

Former Coronation Street star Liz Dawn has confirmed that her decision to quit the soap saved her life. In her final months with the soap, playing Vera became such a struggle that she suffered from panic attacks at work. "Leaving the show really did save my life.
