- As a young man, he moved to Birmingham (UK), where he taught German during the day (he was also fluent in French and Spanish), and played in clubs at night. He formed a band called The Saints with Bill Wyman, and played folk music with Christine Perfect (who, as Christine McVie, became a member of Fleetwood Mac). In 1963, he founded the Spencer Davis Group, with himself on guitar, a teenage Steve Winwood on organ and vocals, Steve's brother Muff on bass and Peter York on drums. In 1967, at the height of their popularity, Winwood quit to join Traffic, and the Spencer Davis Group broke up soon afterward.
