Free Flick Fridays:The Daytrippers

11 December 2009 5:13 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Greg Mottola's Adventureland was one of the best films of 2009, and his first film, The Daytrippers, is another sweet and salty gem, sending a Long Island family (including Hope Davis and Parker Posey) in pursuit of a philandering husband. The Daytrippers Dir. Greg Mottola (1996) In order to truly understand Long Island, whose shores stretch from paragons of tackiness (the Amy Fisher case, Lindsay Lohan's public meltdown) to the snooty wonderland of the Hamptons, you probably have to consider the development of the American suburb. Suburbia first truly thrived in Long Island, and yet the cultural opportunities of New York City are just a day's reach away. That's the central motif and great divide explored in Greg Mottola's very funny debut film, The Daytrippers, which pivots on a secret love note that heretofore happily married Eliza (Hope Davis) finds one morning. Unfortunately, the note is meant for another. Oscar MythBusting: One Day They'll Be Nominated!

2 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Most fans of established actors believe that one day their favorite will be nominated for an Oscar. In 2009 campaigns hopes are particularly high for Sandra Bullock, Alfred Molina, Colin Firth and Christopher Plummer. Fans of James McAvoy and Sam Rockwell still hold out longshot hope. But guess what? The odds are, generally speaking, against them on February 2nd (two months hence!) when the lucky 20 are called.

Most actors aren't ever nominated for the big prize. People seemed surprise to read in an old Oscar Mythbusting column I wrote years ago that the majority of nominated actors (approximately 67%) never receive a second nomination. But I did the research and it's true. Even less likely than a second nomination: a first one. Consider this...

The following (living) legends have still never been nominated despite rich bodies of work and several classic films or exuberantly praised performances: Mia Farrow, Isabelle Huppert, Christopher Plummer and Donald Sutherland. »

Let Me Off at Off- and Off-Off-Broadway

1 November 2009 6:59 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

There is nothing inherently wrong with movie and TV stars being big draws on Broadway, necessitating current top ticket prices of 140 bucks or so, along with seats in the mezzanine that are so narrow they make you feel morbidly obese. This is nothing necessarily improper with any of this, because, in the case of, say Yazmina Reza's Tony Award winning drama God of Carnage, a powerful Albee-esque drama starring the brilliant Tony-winning Marcia Gay Harden, along with James Gandolfini, Hope Davis and Jeff Daniels, the $81.50 you spend for a Tuesday night in the nosebleed seats becomes a transcendent theatrical experience at the Bernard Jacobs, with director Matthew Warchus expertly guiding two sets of parents into upper class warfare after one of their children has knocked out the teeth of the other. But as satisfying as God of Carnage is, there »

The Week in Film: What will fly at the box office? And what won't?

23 October 2009 2:13 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Editor's note: This week we're welcoming Mike Wong on board to write our weekly movie column.

Another week, another set of movies. Hard to believe it’s already nearly November when the Oscar-bait starts being dangled, and unless you didn’t see any movies last week, I’m sorry to say it’s a good week to stay home or do something not movie related.

The first of the wide releases this week is Amelia starring the swanky Hilary Swank in a movie that almost no one was waiting for. This biopic about Amelia Earhart, the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic, seems to have flown out of the Hollywood machine with every cliché and formulaic fixture intact. Currently scoring a 22% on Rottentomatoes.com, I’ll wager that it’ll probably experience some serious turbulence in the box office.

In Treatment, HBO's innovative shrink drama, has been renewed for a third season, the network announced.

The five-times-a-week series revolves around the patient sessions of Dr. Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne), a psychologist who lives in Brooklyn.

Dianne Wiest appeared in both Seasons 1 and 2 as Paul's therapist, Gina, and a rotating cast of actors (Blair Underwood, Embeth Davidtz, Josh Charles, Hope Davis and John Mahoney, to name several) have played his patients.

The casting of Paul's third-season patients has not been announced.

Production is scheduled to begin in New York in early 2010, with the season to air later in that year.

Hollywood Stars Smash Broadway Records

21 October 2009 5:10 AM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

If you want to break the box office, you get an A-list star - and Broadway's learning that that's as true in theater as it is on the silver screen. With movie stars on the marquees of its plays, Broadway is seeing one of its best fall seasons in recent years, selling $21.1 million from Oct. 12 to 18, according to The New York Times. Both A Steady Rain has grossed over $1 million, thanks to stars Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman. 10 Most Overrated Young Actors

13 October 2009 7:18 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

We've listed down our top 50 hottest young actors and would be coming up with the latest updates very soon. Yesterday, we discussed  about actors we believed to be quite underrated. How about the young actors we consider overrated? That's what this article is for...

- - -

- - -

Who qualifies as overrated? Guys who seem to be getting lots of buzz, but has no real talent at all, or perhaps just a small amount of it. I have no issue if an actor gets the cover of GQ or Details or L'Uomo Vogue every month. They can even strut their stuff on the catwalks of Milan and Paris and gain additional media mileage. But to be considered the hottest actor on the planet with nothing to show yet? That is something totally absurd.

Anyway, here's our list of ten just after the jump!

Zooey Deschanel: New Movie, Newly Married (Trailer)

21 September 2009 6:15 AM, PDT | TheImproper.com | See recent TheImproper.com news »

Offbeat actress Zooey Deschanel married Death Cab for Cutie frontman Ben Gibbard at a private ceremony near Seattle, Washington, over the weekend. Deschanel, also has a new movie coming out in which she stars for the second time and could end up challenging Jennifer Aniston as the queen of romantic comedy. Only close friends, including her “Your Highness” co-stars James Franco and Natalie Portman, and family were invited to the ceremony. Deschanel’s breakthough role was in Cameron Crowe's “Almost Famous,” with Kate Hudson. It was her second film. She debuted in quirky comedy “Mumford” with Hope Davis and Jason Lee in 1999. But she was almost type-cast as a supporting actress until she won a starring role in “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey. »

Watching the Emmys

21 September 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.

Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

8:00

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

Okay, here comes Neil Patrick Harris, »

2009 Emmy predictions: Find out who will win!

17 September 2009 3:49 PM, PDT | EW - Ausiello Files | See recent EW.com - The Ausiello Files news »

Not to toot my own horn, but I was pretty much the only person on the planet to predict that Brian Cranston would win the Emmy last year for Breaking Bad. Bear that in mind as you peruse my 2009 picks. Remember though, If you use any of the info below in your office pool, I'm legally entitled to receive 20 percent of the jackpot. Also keep in mind this is who/what I think will win, not necessarily who I want to win. Best Comedy Series Entourage Family Guy Flight of the Conchords How I Met Your Mother The Office *30 Rock Weeds * Barring a Family Guy upset, Emmy voters will go to there again with Tina Fey's rollicking (albeit increasingly uneven) satire. Best Actor In A Comedy Series Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock Steve Carell, The Office Jemaine Clement, Flight of the Conchords *Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory Tony Shalhoub, Monk Charlie Sheen, »

Daniels' Fears Over Carnage Co-stars

8 September 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actor Jeff Daniels hopes his God Of Carnage co-star James Gandolfini will not cancel another performance of the Broadway show - insisting he has "no patience" for actors who don't show up for work.

The pair will again share the stage alongside Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden when the Yasmina Reza play resumes on Tuesday after a brief summer hiatus.

Gandolfini was forced to scrap a preview of the show on doctors' orders to rest his voice in March - and Daniels is anxious his celebrity co-stars will fall ill before the cast takes its final bow.

He tells the New York Daily News, “I’m old school. I don’t have any patience... There’s a responsibility to show up, even more with us (four) to do the show no matter what.” »

Forgotten Films: The Daytrippers

25 August 2009 10:02 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Forgotten Films [1] is a semi-regular feature on Film Junk where we explore interesting movies that have fallen off the radar or slipped through the cracks over the years. With the release of Greg Mottola's Adventureland on DVD this week, I thought I should finally get around to writing something about his very first feature film, the often overlooked The Daytrippers. When Adventureland hit theatres back in April, critics seemed very receptive to it, but a lot of moviegoers came away confused because they had been expecting another Superbad. To be fair, Superbad was Mottola's only well-known film, and the marketing for Adventureland did indeed play on that fact. But if you look at Greg Mottola's background as a filmmaker, you'll see that he isn't just another teen comedy guy. The reason why he fits so well within Judd Apatow's crew is because he favours relatable, character-driven films that have an emotional core. »

Davis Worried About London Trip

3 August 2009 1:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Actress Hope Davis is losing sleep as she plans for an upcoming trip to England, and not just because she'll be playing former U.S. First Lady Hillary Clinton - she's terrified of flying.

Ironically, the About Schmidt star's father was a pilot, but that fact doesn't make the thought of her trip to London, where she'll star in The Special Relationship, any easier.

She says, "I always step on the plane with my right foot and touch the outside of the plane with my left hand. Sometimes there's someone standing there to welcome you to the plane and I have to kind of get them to move a little bit so I can put my hand on the outside of the plane.

"It's not a natural thing to be up in the sky in a little metal tube. My father was a pilot, my father who's long gone, he was a pilot of small planes, so we'd travel to family gatherings... It wasn't a good thing. I think my fear came early.

"My husband sleeps on planes. Completely relaxed. 'What's there to be scared of? It's the safest way to travel,' they keep saying to me. I'm sure it's going to end up sounding like I'm completely neurotic. I'm actually just a little overwhelmed at this point. I'm actually better when I'm flying with my children. I think, 'Well, if we go, we go!'" »

The 10 Biggest Emmy Snubs of 2009

29 July 2009 8:00 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – The 61st Annual Emmy Award Nominations were an interesting melting pot of smart, brave, new choices and old-fashioned, predictable, stale selections.

It was fantastic to see a few first-time nominees from our own “Dream Emmys” piece including Jim Parsons for “The Big Bang Theory,” Jack McBrayer for “30 Rock,” Kristen Wiig for “Saturday Night Live,” Aaron Paul for “Breaking Bad,” Hope Davis for “In Treatment,” Toni Collette in “United States of Tara,” and Cherry Jones for “24”. Those are great choices that hint at an organization willing to think outside of the box when it comes to handing out awards.

Now, that doesn’t mean some people weren’t totally screwed. For every great choice this year, there was one that could politely be called a head-scratcher. In my humble, TV-critic opinion, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences failed to nominate what should have Won the top three dramatic categories »
