The life and tragic unsolved death of one of Britain’s most beloved TV presenters, Jill Dando, is to be profiled in a Netflix documentary series.
The as-yet-untitled show comes from Empress Films and will blend archive with new research and interviews to revisit Dando’s life, career legacy and a death that remains one of the most notorious unsolved murders of the 20th century.
In April 1999, Dando was shot dead outside her home in London prompting the biggest ever murder inquiry conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the country’s largest criminal investigation since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. Yet, with 2,000 potential suspects identified, her killer has still not been found. Dando was an English journalist, television presenter and newsreader who spent most of her career at the BBC.

Warning: contains spoilers for Line of Duty series six, episode two.
From the Brink’s-Mat Robbery, to predatory sex offender Jimmy Savile, the scripts for police drama Line of Duty are peppered with mention of real-world criminal cases. Blending reality and fiction cements the show’s naturalism and feeds into each series’ themes.
Series six revolves around the investigation into the murder of fictional journalist Gail Vella, played by Andi Osho. The first episode opens just over a year since Vella was fatally shot outside her home, in which time no suspects have been charged. The officer leading the investigation is suspected of a cover-up, which is thought to explain the lack of progress on the case, and brings Line of Duty’s anti-corruption leads into proceedings.
In episode two, a likely motive for Vella’s murder is uncovered. The journalist was investigating links between police corruption and organised crime,...

Jill Dando was assassinated by a Serbian hitman, it has been alleged. Historian Branka Prpa, whose journalist husband was shot dead just days before Dando's murder, has claimed that dictator Slobodan Milosevic ordered the BBC host's execution after she fronted an appeal on behalf of Kosovan-Albanian refugees, warning of a humanitarian disaster caused by the Serbian regime. Slavko Curuvija, a critic of the Serbian regime, was shot dead outside the Belgrade home he shared with Prpa on April 11, 1999, 15 days before Dando was killed in almost identical circumstances in West London. Both were high-profile journalists who had publicly discussed the Serbian regime and both were approached from behind, forced to the ground and shot at close range in the head, dying instantly. These are regarded as signs of a professional hitman, The Mirror reports. "I think there is a link (more)...

Rav Wilding has admitted that he feared for his life after being sent abusive messages by an obsessed fan. Speaking at Warley Magistrates' Court, West Midlands, Wilding claimed that he was afraid he would be murdered like his Crimewatch predecessor Jill Dando. Wilding, who appeared on last year's Strictly Come Dancing, revealed that 24-year-old Toneeta Beckford had told him she would "see him on Judgement Day" and warned that he would need to "plead for mercy". She also told the TV star that she hoped he would break a leg while performing on Strictly. The 32-year-old said: "Obviously in the nature of my work on Crimewatch my predecessor was murdered, so I have to take security very, very seriously. (more)...

You could have heard a body drop when news reached the Filmshaft office that Dagenham was hosting a cauldron of gangster violence, sexual deviance and the supernatural. “What’s the story there? Why don’t we go the whole hog and report on the f—king local buses?” was just one response but when Filmshaft informed Ed Whitfield that there were vampires and free sandwiches involved, his mood changed. “I suppose I could go and take a look…”
It’s a freezing cold November morning in Dagenham, East London and I’m lost in a labyrinthine maze of industrial hangers and silver gilded fences. “Where the f—k am I?” is my question to a stray dog and I reach for the I-phone map app. This technological marvel, coded by a bastard evidently, tells me that my destination is the other side of an imposing 12 foot wall of perforated corrugated sheeting.

Police are probing new evidence which reportedly links the murder of Jill Dando to a Serbian hitman. Witnesses claim that they heard a West Midlands man, of Serbian descent, boast of the killing as an act of revenge for the 1999 Nato bombing of Belgrade. According to the Sunday Times, the man "took a theatrical bow" after allegedly making the revelation before more than ten witnesses at a bar in central Belgrade in 2001. Metropolitan Police homicide squad officers are allegedly looking at the new evidence as part of a review of Operation Oxborough, (more)...
