Exclusive: Buoyed by the overperformance of music-driven films Bob Marley: One Love and Mean Girls, Paramount Pictures has slotted Better Man for an exclusive qualifying release on December 25, followed by a wide theatrical release on January 17 in the heat of awards season. The film is an original musical by The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey, based on the life and music of singer Robbie Williams.
Paramount earlier this month made a $25 million commitment for North American rights to the film, one of the largest indie film rights deals in years. The studio believes it has a winner — it leaned into Bob Marley and the film has so far grossed north of $123M worldwide on a $70 million budget. The challenge on Better Man will come in the marketing: North America is about the only place on the planet where Williams is not a megastar singer, even though he spends most of his time in the U.

In a huge deal for a film originating in the independent marketplace, Paramount Pictures sources have confirmed the studio’s acquisition of North American rights to the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man.
Michael Gracey, who directed The Greatest Showman and produced Rocketman, will direct the film about the life of the former Take That band member who went on to become a solo star.
Paramount is eying an end of year theatrical release after negotiating the deal with CAA Media Finance and reportedly paying $25m. Rocket Science has sold out international rights.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has stepped up for a $25 million commitment for North American theatrical rights to Better Man, a fantastical original musical directed by Michael Gracey, helmer of the blockbuster musical The Greatest Showman. The film is about the unlikely rise of celebrated singer-songwriter Robbie Williams.
The deal marks the year’s biggest North American deal for an independent film in years, and Paramount is going to give it a full theatrical release, eyeing later this year. Studio is coming off the success of Mean Girls, which led the box office last month and grossed $92 million worldwide so far. It also is aggressively rolling out globally Bob Marley: One Love, a film that bows February 14, as Paramount leans into films in the musical space.
Rolling out Better Man late in the year gives the studio plenty of time to address a challenge in the U.S. and Canada for the conundrum that is Robbie Williams.

Shane Black’s latest thriller, Play Dirty, is getting a new producer.
Amazon, which is backing the feature, is in negotiations to tap Jules Daly to replace Joel Silver after the streaming giant parted ways with the veteran moviemaker over claims of verbal abuse.
Silver was steering Play Dirty, a feature seen as a comeback vehicle for both him and longtime collaborator Black, who is writing and directing for Amazon. Simultaneously, he also was producing the Doug Liman-directed remake of Road House, this one starring Jake Gyllenhaal. Road House had completed shooting and is deep in post-production, with expectations of hitting sometime next year. Play Dirty is expected to begin shooting next year.
Amazon MGM Studios declined to comment. An insider said Silver had completed work on Road House and was no longer involved in Play Dirty. Variety first reported the news of Silver’s departure.

Dating in 2023 is a minefield of unspoken rules, ambiguous texts, and busy people whose relationship timelines rarely align. Trying to navigate the social politics of dating apps in search of a partner for life (or the night) is a complex puzzle that often feels more like a geopolitical espionage mission than good old fashioned courtship. Unless you’re Chris Evans in “Ghosted,” in which case it actually is a geopolitical espionage mission. The latest blockbuster from Apple TV+ stars Evans as a guy who just wants to get a second date with a girl who ghosted him, only to find out that she had a very good reason for not texting him back. His attempts to track her down result in him being kidnapped and sucked into a dangerous adventure — where the only person who can save him might be the person who couldn’t be bothered to respond to his DMs.

Apple TV+ dropped the trailer for the upcoming rom-com turned thriller “Ghosted,” which stars Chris Evans and Ana de Armas.
The trailer shows Evans’ character Cole certain that Sadie (de Armas) is not just “ghosting” him, or ignoring his texts, after one date. Convinced they are meant to be together, he travels to London in what he hopes to be a romantic gesture, only to discover Sadie is not the person he thought, and is actually part of the CIA. What ensues is a spy-thriller where “action speaks louder than words.”
De Armas joins the film after her recent Oscar nomination for “Blonde.” Her credits also include “Deep Water,” “Blade Runner 2049” and “No Time to Die.” Evans has played Captain America in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films, as well as performed in “Before We Go,” “Gifted” and “Playing It Cool.” Evans and de Armas previously acted together in “Knives Out” and “The Gray Man.

Amazon did not report viewership figures for their $200M Skydance acquisition title The Tomorrow War, but third-party streaming analytics corp Samba TV did, and the Chris Pratt movie drew 2.41M U.S. households during the 4-day holiday weekend.
The previous 3-day weekend viewership for Amazon movies Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse, another Skydance pick-up by the streamer, and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm was respectively 2.3M and 1.6M over three days. Amazon has previously reported that their Eddie Murphy acquisition Coming 2 America was their biggest weekend premiere ever, but nobody knows the numbers on that; Samba TV also didn’t measure that pic’s first weekend. Amazon also reported that Borat 2‘s first weekend was watched by “tens of millions” whatever that means.
On the plus side, Tomorrow War‘s weekend viewership beats the first four days of HBO Max’s Justice League: The Snyder Cut which attracted 1.8M households stateside.

Amazon has released the first official trailer for sci-fi blockbuster “The Tomorrow War,” debuting on July 2 and starring Chris Pratt as Dan Forester, a high school teacher (and military vet) who is recruited by a group of time travelers to fight a war 30 years in the future.
“I was trying to save my daughter,” a war-hardened Pratt says in the trailer. “If I’ve gotta save the world to save her, then I’m gonna do it.”
In the movie, an alien species threatens life on Earth, and the only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to travel to the year 2051 and help save the planet. Dan teams up with his estranged father, played by J.K. Simmons, and a brilliant scientist, portrayed by Yvonne Strahovski, to rewrite the fate of mankind.
In the trailer, soldiers from the future interrupt a televised soccer match to recruit present-day fighters.

Amazon has released the first official trailer for “The Tomorrow War,” its showy $200 million action tentpole starring Chris Pratt as an ex-military man drafted to travel in time in order to save his daughter (and humanity) from a future alien attack. Originally set for a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures, the movie was acquired by Amazon Studios in a deal worth a reported $200 million due to the pandemic. Now with theaters opening back up, “The Tomorrow War” producers may be kicking themselves that it won’t be seen on the big screen when it premieres exclusively on Prime Video this July.
Directed by frequent Phil Lord and Chris Miller collaborator Chris McKay, the apocalyptic alien drama appears to lean hard into the action side of things with a few brief moments of comedic relief, a slight departure from Lord and Miller’s signature action-comedy style.

That’s the set up for director Chris McKay’s action sci-fi, which unlike “The Terminator” films doesn’t send the invading force to the past but sends the heroes to the fight itself in the future. Pratt in the film teams with a scientist played by Yvonne Strahovski and his own estranged father, played by J.K. Simmons, to rewrite the fate of the planet and make a better world for his family.

Significant deals have closed in the UK (Entertainment), Germany & Austria (Tobis), Australia (Village Roadshow), Italy (Lucky Red), Cis/Baltic States (Volga) and Scandinavia (Nordisk).
Pacts have also been secured in Eastern Europe (Vertical), Benelux (The Searchers), Switzerland (Ascot Elite), Middle East (Front Row), Greece/Cyprus (Odeon), Portugal (Lusomundo), and Israel (Forum).
Production is slated for summer 2021 on the feature, which will explore the experiences that made Williams who he is, and the demons he battled both on and off the stage. We hear there will be a strong CGI component to the film, which will negate the need to cast a big name to portray Williams.

'Jungleland' trailer is out now and it packs a hell of a wallop.
Paramount Pictures has released the official trailer for the long-awaited bare-knuckle boxing drama 'Jungleland' which was filmed in and around Fall River.
The film stars Charlie Hunnam as Stanley, brother, and trainer of bare-knuckle boxer Lion (played by Jack O’Connell).
'Jungleland' follows the story of the two brothers struggling to stay relevant in the underground world of bare-knuckle boxing. The two travel across the country for one last high-stakes match that becomes a fight for their lives, along with an unexpected companion (Jessica Barden) after failing to pay back a dangerous crime boss (Jonathon Majors).
While Stanley trains Lion for the fight of his life, a series of unexpected events threaten to tear the brothers apart. However, their love for each other and belief in a better life keeps them going.

Exclusive: Deadline has learned that a reboot of Blake Edwards hit 1979 comedy 10 is happening at Warner Bros. with Legally Blonde‘s Karen McCullah and Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith writing. Sue Kroll, through Kroll & Co. Entertainment’s exclusive deal at the Burbank, CA studio, will produce alongside Jeff Nathanson. Julie Andrews and Ashok Amritraj will serve as executive producers.
The original movie, which starred Edwards’ wife Julie Andrews, Dudley Moore and Bo Derek, followed a Hollywood composer going through a mid-life crisis who becomes infatuated with a newly married woman. 10 was a huge box office hit back in the day making close to $75M at the domestic box office.
The new project will take a comedic look at the question of what defines a “perfect 10” in today’s world. The new contemporary re-imagining will be inspired by the original film’s wit, humor and groundbreaking conversations around sexual politics.
“10 holds a special place in my heart.

Exclusive: The Max Winkler-directed drama Jungleland — which pairs Charlie Hunnam and Jack O’Connell in a drama about bare-knuckle boxing — is in the ring with Lionsgate on a deal for North American rights. Several distributors have been into this, but I’m told that Lionsgate is the frontrunner in talks to secure a movie that got strong reviews after it premiered at Toronto last fall.
Hunnam plays the manager and O’Connell plays his bare-knuckle boxer brother. They fall into heavy debt to a mobster and are given the chance to wipe the slate clean if they travel to San Francisco and compete in Jungleland — a bare knuckle boxing tournament. And, oh, yeah, they also have to drop off a teen girl at the doorstep of a feared mobster. Failing will mean death. Jessica Barden plays the teen and Jonathan Majors plays the mobster to whom they fall into debt.

Sue Kroll is set to produce the New York Times Penguin bestseller City of Girls from Eat Pray Love author Elizabeth Gilbert under the Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner.
Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the film rights to the novel, which was published on June 4, on behalf of Kroll & Co. WGA-nominated Masters of Sex creator Michelle Ashford, who earned an Emmy nom for co-writing HBO’s The Pacific, will adapt the feature screenplay.
It’s Gilbert’s second book to be adapted for the big screen, after her memoir Eat Pray Love, which racked up $205M at the global box office in 2010. City of Girls is set against the backdrop of the New York City theater world of the 1940s, centering on a young woman’s exploration of love, sex, self-discovery and friendship.
Nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.
