We start at the end as three young lovers jump around in their underwear on a bed in Italy. The voice we hear is of a French woman (Anne-Laure Jardry)—our assumption being that it’s the woman on-screen remembering what was. And why shouldn’t it? We’ve yet to meet Christine (Cristina Rambaldi) or the two men by her side (Mattia Minasi’s Marcello and Neyssan Falahi’s Nassim). All we know is that this scene depicts their final moment of unbridled excitement before the complexity of the world they dreamed to conquer together returns them to the uncertainty that ultimately set them onto their collision course in the first place. We subsequently rewind to watch Marcello and Nassim finally cross Christine’s path. She’s American. The narrator is presumedly someone else.

The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

Other branches whose contenders hit double digits included Cinematographers (12), Directors (13), Executives (12), Producers (16), Sound (10) and Visual Effects (10).

"Enjoy the future and whatever will come." An official trailer has debuted an indie B&w sultry drama titled Show Me What You Got, the feature directorial debut of an experienced cinematographer who's worked on numerous acclaimed documentaries. An undeniable spark during a chance meeting leads a curious group of three 30-somethings to explore their sexuality while rumbling from Los Angeles to Italy, and discover the profound effect strangers can have on the trajectory of their lives. The film stars up-and-comers Cristina Rambaldi, Neyssan Falahi, and introducing Mattia Minasi; also featuring Pietro Genuardi, Giusy Frallonardo, Anne Brochet, and Karen Obilom. This looks incredibly sensual, sexual, and thoughtful, an examination of life and the challenges of relationships. There's some clearly gorgeous shots in this trailer. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Svetlana Cvetko's Show Me What You Got, direct from YouTube: In a richly filmed black-and-white, three late-twentysomethings come...

In its continuing push to swell the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences membership ranks, 842 artists and executives from 59 countries have been invited to join this year. The branches have increasingly actively sought eligible people to become Academy members, but the Board of Governors makes the final call.
People of color (29 percent) and women (50 percent) are among the many invites, as the Academy continues to address its long-term white-male dominance. As always, actors make up the largest branch of the Academy, but many new members also come from overseas.
In 2018, the Academy invited 928 new members.
Twenty-one Oscar winners are among the new invited members, including Guy Nattiv (“Skin”), filmmaker Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo”), Phil Lord, and Chris Miller (“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”), and 82 Oscar nominees (including newbies like Lady Gaga and “Roma” breakout Marina de Tavira). Ten of the 17 branches invited more women than men. The percentage of women...

Director: Charles Ferguson Cinematographers: Svetlana Cvetko, Kalyanee Mam – Cinematographer Starring: Matt Damon (Narration) Studio: Sony PIctures Classics A whodunnit where everybody’s the victim Charles Ferguson makes a different kind of documentary. There are no dramatizations, no voice-overs from the grave. There are no “what ifs” and very few “how dare theys.” He is not a provocateur or even a trained filmmaker. He’s a political scientist, a product of the Brookings Institute and MIT. He takes on subjects and collects actual facts, knowing that the best way for a documentary to make its point is to make that point absolutely...

Roughly halfway through "Inside Job," Andrew Lo, a professor of finance at MIT, describes an academic study of brain activity that showed that the same part of the brain stimulated by money is the same as cocaine. That this observation is made in the midst of a montage of Wall Street's infatuation with hookers, blow and the black corporate credit cards used to charge the latter two doesn't just imply that the pursuit of cash is a drug, but that as a filmmaker, Charles Ferguson has taken the gloves off.
Since his Oscar-winning 2007 doc "No End in Sight," Ferguson has gone from attacking a war to declaring one on Wall Street with a film that just as easily could've been called "No End in Sight II: Financial Edition." Broken down into four chapters and countless graphs, "Inside Job" is another brilliant, scrupulous breakdown of...

(Untitled) is a satire with its finger squarely on the pulse of the 21st century art world. It’s a film for anyone who’s stood in a modern art exhibit, stared at one of its installations and pondered the age old conundrum, the source of many a freshman lit essay: What makes this art? Director Jonathan Parker, who co-wrote the screenplay with Catherine Dinapoli, expands from that fundamental starting point to consider the types of people that might me driven to make such things and whether, in the end, to dismiss them is to be robbed of a defining component of the age. It’s a sharp movie, pitched at a tone located squarely between archness and sincerity. The combination of its twin settings of blindingly white galleries and garishly designed New York apartments, when blended with an all-around cacophonic feel, lends the picture a surrealistic edge. Starring Adam Goldberg and Marley Shelton, two...
