The depiction of him in Good Morning, Vietnam (1987) is a fictionalized portrayal. A number of Robin Williams's monologues in the movie would have gotten Cronauer court-martialed in real life. Also, the movie depicts Cronauer as left-leaning. In reality, he was a registered Republican who supported Bob Dole and George W. Bush for US President.
He was a brother of Pi Kappa Phi national fraternity.
Touring with a mobile Vietnam Veterans' Memorial and helping
bring POWs/MIAs home as part of the Pentagon's POW/MIA program. When
he's not touring, he works in the program's headquarters in the Crystal
City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia. (2003)
He voiced TV and radio commercials, owned his own ad agency, managed a radio station, was program director of a TV station, and was a TV news anchorman. He taught broadcasting at the university level and wrote a textbook on radio & TV announcing.
He attended the University of Pittsburgh and American University, then enlisted in the Air Force as a radio-TV production specialist. Later in life, he studied media law at the University of Pennsylvania law school and had a second career as an attorney and Pentagon advisor.
