Sam Crawford was born on April 18, 1880 in Wahoo, Nebraska, USA. He was an actor, known for College (1927) and The Glory of Their Times (1970). He died on June 15, 1968 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, USA.
Elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Committee on Baseball
Veterans in 1957.
Holds the major league career record for triples with 312. No other major league player has reached 300 triples.
Played baseball in the major leagues from 1899 to 1917. He played with the Cincinnati Reds from 1899 to 1902, then the Detroit Tigers from 1903 to 1917.
For many years, Crawford and Ty Cobb did not speak to each other while
they played together on the Tigers.
There is no doubt at all in my mind that the old-time ballplayer was smarter than the modern ballplayer. Now the game is all power, lively balls, and shorter fences.
On Ty Cobb: "He was still fighting the Civil War, and as far as he was
concerned we were all damn Yankees. But who knows, if he hadn't had
that terrible persecution complex he never would've been about the best
ballplayer who ever lived."
